July 20, 2015 Report

Vince and his friend had fished with me back in February and today he boarded with his brother Max and his nephew Lucas. Lucas had never been fishing before and was anxious to see what it was all about. The fishing started slow due to the slack tide but I reassured them as soon as the tide turned things would get better. And they did! Once we had a good current flow the fishing turned on and Lucas had his hands full. He had the hot hand today and landed the two biggest mutton snappers, the most fish and hooked the biggest fish, one that burned up the drag and gave him a scorching 10 minute fight, even chasing the fish with the boat barely helped. Once Lucas began to make some head way on the fish it broke him off on the bottom. NO! Along the way we had several double hook ups and a triple hook up for good measure. What a morning!

July 17, 2015 Report (Orvis fly fishing school)

Today was day two of the Orvis' kids fly fishing school and casting instructor Chris and his two students, brothers Drew and Will were on board. I decided to forgo the hot bonefish action and get them on easier game so off to a nearby spot we went. Upon anchoring the spot came alive with baitfish all over, small rolling tarpon and other explosions we couldn't quite identify. Drew landed a blue runner on his fly rod and Will got cut off by what was more than likely a barracuda and lost a few other fish. The trip ended in the same creek from yesterday and the snappers were there but the kids missed the hook set on a few fish there. The brothers were also great and off to a great start and Chris was excellent with them and fun to fish with. Capt. July 16, 2015 Report (Orvis fly fishing school)

As the last leg of Orvis' fly fishing school, 7th and 8th graders Tag and Ram jumped aboard with their casting instructor Roy for a half day of fly fishing out of the Orvis store out of Ocean Reef Club. A quick run to the flats proved to be the right move as we were fishing slick calm water and tons of bonefish schools tailing all around us. However, although we got very close to the schools the kids were still working out there casting techniques and we didn't connect. The morning trip ended with us tucked in a creek and a ton of snappers and jacks behind the boat but the wouldn't commit to eating the fly. What a difference a few days make! Today Biscayne Bay was alive with fish all over the flats. Tanner jumped aboard for a full day of sneaking out on his friend's bachelor party. With fly rod in hand his first shot came on the first flat and what a shot! It was a school of about a dozen 10-12lb tailing bonefish. They tailed long and hard and we had numerous shots at the monsters but didn't connect. The rest of the day went on about the same. We found bonefish and permit on every flat we fished except one! Tanner ended the day with a hook up on a permit that spit the hook after a minute or two into the fight. Urgh! Capt. There are days when you have good casters on board and really want to make something happen for them, well today was one of those days. Joe and his buddy Joe (Sach) boarded my skiff with fly rods in hand ready to chase the big 3, bonefish, tarpon and permit. The first shot of the morning was at a school of big tailing bonefish in which we had the luxury of taking several shots at them but no hook up. The majority of the trip was really slow until we found a school of permit and Sach had a shot at them but it was a tough shot. The search for tarpon was the last leg of our trip and while we found some, there were very few. Today was a day where I was shocked at how slow it was and quite frustrated. Capt. July 2, 2015 Report

Today I fished with ex-race car driver Peter out of South Biscayne Bay. We started bonefishing in some tough conditions but found a number of bones but it was tough to get the fly to them well enough under the dark, cloud covered skies. The fishing for other species was slow but we ended the trip with great visibility and numerous shots at big mudding bonefish. Capt. Bill from the S.F. Giants joined me again today and while we didn't get a tarpon there were plenty of fish boated. Fishing jigs the rods stayed bent most of the morning with a variety of fish including a double hook up. The weather was certainly hot but the fishing was hotter and we had a blast!
