Birthday in the "Glades September 26, 2020

I had Frank and his 11 year old son John on board today and John was turning 11 today, and this was his first fishing trip, and this was part of his birthday present, and Frank told me John was SUPER excited.  So awesome!

John hadn't really cast much before but got the hang of it over the course of the trip.  But, to start him off we used bait to get him warmed up and he quickly released a few catfish, which is always a 2 point deduction but served it's purpose today.  The fishing was definitely tough today with the tide being the opposite of the tide predictions and super high water.  Well, that didn't stop us from working hard and when the dust settled John caught his first snook and caught it on a lure he cast and worked himself, released four sharks, caught trout and lost a nice redfish.  Not bad for the conditions and a newbie that will soon be a master. By the way, his dad text me that night saying John wanted to go again.  Mission accomplished!

Double Header Friday and A Regret September 18, 2020

Today I had two trips with my morning one being an abbreviated trip of two hours with Aaron and his wife.  When Aaron called me yesterday and asked if I could do 2 hours I said yes and I warned him about how quickly time flies on a charter but he stood fast with his two hour request.  Well, they were great people and I took them to a wreck where they caught a bunch of snappers, yellow jacks and lost a big shark that we targeted but broke him off on the structure.  When it was time to go he admitted he wished he would have booked a 4 hour trip and was regretting his decision the moment he made the first cast and hooked up immediately.

My afternoon trip was with Patrick and Julie from Texas.  These folks are great and they book me every year.  They really just wanted to catch anything but I really wanted them to get a bonefish.  Our bonefish efforts lasted about 2 hours and after missing a few bites we changed it up and fished another wreck.  This time we had a bunch of big yellow jacks and other species and the drags got a workout.

Back in the 'Glades September 15, 2020 Report

I hadn't been down in Flamingo in a while but today I was with John.  I have to tell you, it felt like a slow day with a few reds and a snook caught but that was no fault of the fish.  Our first spot would set the tone for the day with John missing a few snook that blew up his top water and I missed a few bite my self.  With the fishing slowing down we hit another spot that held even more fish including tailing redfish but once again we missed quite a few bites.  So, I checked the hooks and they were sharp with the barbs in good shape.  What's going on?  The last spot had some small tarpon rolling and one of them ate our lure and, well you guessed it, it came off.  Back to the ramp licking our wounds but a fun afternoon either way.

Well, this was epic! September 4, 2020

Last night I got a text from regular client Jake and Henry asking about fishing today and well I said yes and come Friday at 10:30am we were off for a 4 hour trip.  These guys are always great so I knew this would be a cool trip but there was something coming I didn't expect.  They asked me to catch fish they could eat and our first stop produced some fish but no keepers using live shrimp.  The second spot worked out nicely with the guys catching some nice snappers, losing a few bigger ones and fish on every cast.  We smoked through 60 shrimp in no time but with dinner in the well and live shark bait we headed south to the flats.  BUT, along the way I noticed pelicans diving and I knew this was about to get real good.  As I drifted towards the pelicans in 2 feet of water, I readied my cast net and by the time I was ready there was a school of pilchards so think they changed the color of the water.  One throw of the net yielded all the bait I would need but I decided to throw a second time and had to dump half the baits in the water because the new was too full.  WOW!  Now the live well is blacked out and I run to a nearby channel I like and began to live chum.  Well, withing seconds the water was boiling all around us and the guys absolutely wore out the fish.  The landed mutton snapper, yellow jacks, big mangrove snappers, jack crevalles, horse eye jacks, and barracudas.  It was awesome and it reminded me of fall fishing.  Well, were just two weeks away from the beginning of the fall fishing and I think things may be changing sooner than expected.
