It's here, the cancellations. I'm averaging one cancellation a day due to the corona virus but Brad and Sam would not be deterred. The bulk of the morning was spent looking for tarpon and we finally found them. Investing about an hour yielded one strike on artificial, but nothing on fly or bait and no hook ups. With great visibility we went bonefishing on fly but it was slow. This is frustrating, I really want these guys to do well! The day wrapped up on a ship wreck and there they began to catch rod bending species including a grouper by Sam. It was a nice way to end an otherwise slow day on the flats.

I continue to hold my breath with the corona virus as the country stops traveling and most of my business is traveling clients. But, thank God I've stayed really busy for now, waiting for the bottom to fall and work to come to a stop as tourism stops in Miami. Well, that tomorrow. I'll focus on today with Karla and 13 year old Kory who had never been salt water fishing. Man what a nice trip as Kory is now hooked on slat water fishing courtesy of some hot action and about a half dozen new species under his belt. Kory and Karla caught mangrove snapper, look downs, jacks, yellow tail snapper, lost three black tip sharks and more. It was great and they smoked through 7 dozen baits before we knew it!

This was such a cool trip with Mary and her son Charlie. I can tell she really loves her son and is his biggest cheerleader so armed with fly rods we hit the bay. First we went looking for tarpon, and they were every where and feeding. However, the fly seemed to be a second thought to them and switching to artificials didn't make a difference. Knowing they just wanted to catch anything on fly we gave up our best good effort on tarpon and started catching fish. They were taking the fly today much but Charlie didn't land a couple of fish on fly, snapper and runners, but Mary was the big story. She decided to go with artificial lures and tore it up! By the time Charlie switched to lures and bait, Mary had already smoked him. Even using lures and bait, she had the hot hand today and caught a few grouper on lures, snapper, yellow jacks and more. Way to go Mary!

March 12-14, 2020 Report

I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike again for three days. Last time we fished Mike hooked three bonefish on fly and landed two plus a few other species. The goal for the three days was to keep things interesting and catching different species on fly. Since we had really calm conditions for bonefishing we started the first two mornings bonefishing. I noticed a pattern over these three days, the fishing got increasingly challenging. The first morning Mike had plenty of shots at bonefish but they were acting strange, staying close to the bottom even in really shallow water and then caught almost a dozen grouper on fly plus yellow jacks, snapper and more. The other days the bonefshing got slower and the fishibg in general got slower although the second day was still pretty good. All in all it was great fishing with Mike again and he picked up a few more species to add to his list. Great job Mike!

What a blast today with Bob and his son as we took a full day to fish and laugh. I spent a few hours looking for tarpon and then switched off as there were a few around but it was tough fishing. We bounced around different spots and ended the day on a spot that held a bunch of rod bending species including grouper. Great weather and conditions and the winds weren't bad at all for being March. I just need the tarpon to start cooperating.

Repeat clients Jim and his son Jack had booked me for this morning and it was a juggling act since I had four charters for today but one was rescheduled for weather, one was cancelled and the other couldn't fish from Homestead where I was working today. The forecast called for light winds from the west, shifting and increasing to the north west. This means perfect conditions for bonefish out of Homestead so off we went. As soon as we hit the water I noticed the wind was from the south so I was expecting the shift before the coming cold front to happen any moment now. First spot we had some shots at bonefish but withing 15 minutes it started to rain. We moved way off to the east and fished a wreck and while Jack caught big blue runners, the storm we tried to out run hit us and it was a complete white out for about 15 minutes. These guys are tough and jack kept catching fish through the storm. Once it cleared, it got nice but now the wind was honking out of the west so we went to another bonefish spot in the lee of the wind and had some shots but then the fishing died off and we called it a day early before the real nasty wind began.

March 5, 2020 AM & PM Report

AM Report This morning I had Sal, his friend Nico and Sal's mom Anna aboard for tarpon bonefish and permit. I went back to the same spot from yesterday and the tarpon were THICK! With slick calm water and the weather getting warmer by the hour we set up on rolling, finning, laid up tarpon and went to work. Using two live baits and several artificial lures they stood no chance, I thought. We worked those fish for 4 hours and got one bite on the artificial which the big tarpon missed. With time running out I took the boys to several spots where they caught jacks and snappers before calling it a day. Oh, wait I almost forgot. Nico, yes Nico, lost a massive snook and a few other really nice fish. What's up with the Nico? LOL

PM Report I really was on the fence with my afternoon trip, should I try to find redemption with tarpon from my morning trip or just go catch fish? I asked Butch, who brought along his wife Pepa and her sister Marisol from Chile and he said he just wanted to catch fish. Ok, so I took them to a finger channel and that is all we needed. The live well was cleaned out 3 hours later going through almost 100 baits and catching snapper, jack crevalle, horse eye jacks, yellow jacks, big progies, chubs and losing a nice black tip that devoured a fish Butch had on. So cool! They took home some fish for dinner and we called it early since they had gotten their fill of hot action!
