June 29, 2015 Report (Tarpon)

With tarpon season over, the remaining fish are resident fish but equally fun and Bill from the S.F. Giants baseball team had never caught a tarpon. Well, we had to give tarpon fishing a try. Spot one had some rollers but no takers so we moved to spot two. Spot two would be the magic spot and Bill would hook into one about 50lbs that tested the drag and Bill as he fought his fish in windless 90 degree weather. After a 25 minute fight we got his first tarpon to the boat and celebrated the well earned release. Congrats Bill!

Gary and his two boys, Adam and Jake, are local regular clients and hopped aboard with one goal, get the kids some fish and a shark. Shark fishing started slow so we switched off to smaller game and the kids kept the rods bent catching fish after fish including a high flying barracuda until they were ready for more shark fishing. I took them to a flat I like to sight cast smaller sharks and had a blast hooking 3 foot sharks. They had a blast and got their sharks!

Mike and his girlfriend Florenia jumped aboard and I found out she had never caught a fish. So, I had to change that today. Fishing was generally slow but they each caught trout and then we hit the flats. After a hit and no hook up Mike's rod doubles over and the next 25 minutes were foused on landing his 5' lemon shark, about 130 lbs. Now it was Florenia's turn. I took them to a spot I like for snappers and there she landed a few fish before we had to head in to avoid storms. Mike told she she was probably hooked on fishing now. Mission accomplished!

Ryan is from Oklahoma and was in town for a wedding and wanted to squeeze in a 3/4 day trip so off we went. Finding no tarpon we fished for sea trout and the bite was on fire! Almost every cast had a seatrout hoked and coming to the boat. This went on for over an hour. After the seatrout blitz we decided to hit the flats for sharks. Getting one bite but no hook up we kept at it and were rewarded with a bent rod and 100 yards worth of drag scorching shark on the other end. After a 40 minute battle Ryan released a solid 5' lemon shark. What a way to end a great day!

Today I was in North Key Largo for a full day trip with Adam and Jonathan. We targeted a number of different species but the best was left for last. At the end of the trip we decided to shark fish and caught one but on the small side. With time running out I see a big shadow move in and sure enough, a big lemon shark. It swims over our baits, picks one up and we're off to the races. Just a few feet from the boat he bit through the wire and missed leadering the 5' shark. Geeze!

Locals Diaa and his girlfriend Leandra jumped aboard for a half day trip of inshore fishing, something they had not done before. Although the fishing was generally slow we did catch sea trout and an assortment of snappers throughout the bay. These were fun folks that I look forward to fishing with again. Capt. Josh and James joined me today on a 3/4 day charter under gorgeous skies. We found some early morning redfish but no hook ups. Switching tactics we fished for trout and had some nice fish on but lost them all. The day ended with countless shots at tailing redfish in super shallow water. Capt.
