Drag burners kept us BUSY! October 13, 2020

What awesome conditions this morning and we took advantage of every second.  First time fly fishing for bonefish, Adam was armed with my 8wt and his wife Meagan was cheering him on.  We had a decent number of shots in the morning and then decided to get Meagan busy bending some rods.  I located a school of pilchards, threw the cast net a few times and with the live well blacked out we hit a few spots I had a good feeling about.  Well, with a live well full of pilchards, most spots give me a good feeling.  Live chumming we had the grouper and mutton snapper going crazy with Meagan and Adam staying busy landing groupers and an assortment of species.  Twice Meagan hooked monster grouper that burned up the drag and broke her off on structure.  Then the schools of big mutton snappers would move in changing the color of the water and sky rocketing out of the water crushing the live chum.  A few well placed casts had Adam hooked up and hearing the drag sizzle.  What an awesome morning!

Epic Snook Fishing in the Everglades! October 11, 2020 (Video)

I had a day off today but got a call from my friend Mike asking if I wanted to fish Flamingo this morning.  I was on the fence since I wanted a couple of days off but I couldn't say no.  Meeting at 7am and driving down together we launched by 8am and we were off to the races.  What a difference from Friday, no high winds and no dirty water but we still had a huge incoming tide and tons of water on the flats.  Well, we fished one spot and that is all we needed.  We fished less than three hours and in that time caught redfish, lost a nice tarpon and released over 25 snook!  Once the tide slackened, things cooled off and we headed home.  What a morning!  There were times our lures would get hit multiple times without a hookup and the next cast yielded a solid hook up, and at one point I made three casts and caught two snook while missing the bite on the third cast.  Yes, it was epic, yes it was awesome and yes, I want to do it again!

Keith strikes again!!! October 9, 2020 (Video)

Some guys just have that "thing" where everything seems to work out for them and Keith is one of those guys.  Day two of fishing with Chris and Keith took place in Flamingo and once again we had less than ideal conditions with high winds, dirty water and high water.  Oh, and Chris tells me he really wanted Keith to catch tarpon, snook and redfish.  Hmmm, well if you're not into being constantly challenged then guiding isn't for you.  Spot one was slow but spot two held small tarpon and we went 0-2 on tarpon.  Hitting different spots trying to find low clean water was tough but I was able to find the right combination and the guys caught redfish with Keith catching the biggest of the day.  He needs to go play the lotto!

Newbie tears it up and needs to find a new hobby! October 6, 2020 Report (Video)

Regular client Chris brought his grandson Keith along today and although Keith fishes back home for river trout, he hasn't fished in salt water before.  After a few pointers with the spinning rod and some practice casts it was all over.  He started off by catching mutton snapper on the flats and his first bonefish, dang!  Changing it up I located schools of bait and blacked out the live well with live pilchards.  We fished a few wrecks, finger channels and seawalls and the total tally for Keith was:

Bonefish

Cobia

Mutton snapper

Mangrove snapper

Bull sharks

Barracudas and

Yellow jacks

Wow!  He's now ready to take up a new sport, this one is done with!

The boys are back! September 27, 2020 Report

George and his boys Evan and Patrick were back on board today and the conditions were perfect.  I caught bait before they jumped aboard and when we met up it was off to get the kids fired up.  Hitting a few spots the boys tore it up catching jacks, snappers, barracudas, african pompano and more.  After having their fill we hit the flats and they landed a few lemon sharks before calling it day.

Birthday in the "Glades September 26, 2020

I had Frank and his 11 year old son John on board today and John was turning 11 today, and this was his first fishing trip, and this was part of his birthday present, and Frank told me John was SUPER excited.  So awesome!

John hadn't really cast much before but got the hang of it over the course of the trip.  But, to start him off we used bait to get him warmed up and he quickly released a few catfish, which is always a 2 point deduction but served it's purpose today.  The fishing was definitely tough today with the tide being the opposite of the tide predictions and super high water.  Well, that didn't stop us from working hard and when the dust settled John caught his first snook and caught it on a lure he cast and worked himself, released four sharks, caught trout and lost a nice redfish.  Not bad for the conditions and a newbie that will soon be a master. By the way, his dad text me that night saying John wanted to go again.  Mission accomplished!

Double Header Friday and A Regret September 18, 2020

Today I had two trips with my morning one being an abbreviated trip of two hours with Aaron and his wife.  When Aaron called me yesterday and asked if I could do 2 hours I said yes and I warned him about how quickly time flies on a charter but he stood fast with his two hour request.  Well, they were great people and I took them to a wreck where they caught a bunch of snappers, yellow jacks and lost a big shark that we targeted but broke him off on the structure.  When it was time to go he admitted he wished he would have booked a 4 hour trip and was regretting his decision the moment he made the first cast and hooked up immediately.

My afternoon trip was with Patrick and Julie from Texas.  These folks are great and they book me every year.  They really just wanted to catch anything but I really wanted them to get a bonefish.  Our bonefish efforts lasted about 2 hours and after missing a few bites we changed it up and fished another wreck.  This time we had a bunch of big yellow jacks and other species and the drags got a workout.
