Red hot in the cold February 15-22, 2024

This past week the theme has been BURRR!  It's been cold with this last week bringing over night temps in the mid to high 40's. That's really cold for Miami and it has been bone chilling for a Miami native like me but we have to fish and the fish have been active!  Last week started with Pete and his friend on one day with us generally doing some bone fishing but striking out and the following day with Jake who wanted to catch dinner and slaying the yellow jacks with some solid fish and some snappers.  The afternoon trip after Jake was with Steve and his friend for bonefish and again we struck out.  So far this week the fishing has ben good all around but bone fishing has been slow.  Over the weekend I had Grant for two days of fly fishing whatever would eat a fly and we did well taking shots at a bunch of tarpon and then catching jacks on the first day.  The second day we had some tough weather conditions but found even more tarpon and tossed a bunch ion flies but no takes and the fishing that was so good the day before was dead.  The last three days of this report brought us the coldest weather of the last two weeks and clients asking for bonefish.  This was going to be tough but turns out I found a pocket of water 4 degrees cooler than the surrounding area and the bonefish have been stacked up in there providing for some great trips such as Chad and Nathan going 3 for 5, Jim and Carl going 5 for 7 and Bill and son Wyatt going 3 for 6 and missing a number of more bites through no fault of their own.  It's been cold but it's been good!

February 7-14, 2024

After a crazy and insane day bone fishing the erst of the week was with Scott in the morning and Mike in the afternoon of 2/7 and then Mike the rest of the week.  The rest of the week proved really slow for us as we had a hard time finding bonefish and tarpon in Biscayne Bay.  On the last day Mike and I fished, Friday, we went to the Everglades wherein proved to be really slow, heck there weren't even any sharks in Florida bay, how crazy is that!  We relaunched to fish the inside of the Everglades and it as still pretty slow with Mike landing a nice trout on fly and his friend Snow releasing three small lemon sharks we sought as a desperate attempt to bend the rods.  Things improved back in Biscayne Bay over the weekend as I fished with Mike and Ian on Saturday and Pam and her son Nathaniel on Sunday.  On these trips we looked to catch whatever would bend the rod and we found jacks of all sorts, snappers and more breaking the slow curse of the prior week.  The balance of the week was a with Tyrone from South Africa and local angler and client Alec.  We had a blast these last two days with Tyrone catching a number of species including yellow jacks and landing 4 sharks on the flats.  Alec wrapped up the week with nice grouper on soft plastics and monster yellow jacks plus a number of different species we were targeting for a state contest he is fishing.   Well, I'm glad the fishing heated up and I'm off to fish another week.  Stay tuned!

Incredible Day! February 1-6, 2024

This week I've been dealing with cold and windy conditions.  The average night time temperature has been 48 degrees and it's been blowing about 20 MPH.  Yes, tough conditions but the fish have to eat and clients want to fish so here we go!

The first couple off days of the month I had Peter and Matthew and for a mixed bag over these two days.  With Peter, we fished the finger channels and rocked the yellow jacks and snappers but struck out on bonefish.  At one point Peter was hooking fish on almost every cast after we figured out they were staying in a specific corner of the channel.  With Matthew we found a bunch of medium sized tarpon and threw flies like crazy at the rolling fish but never got a bite.  That's normal for tarpon buy the way.  Then the wind laid down and I fished with repeat client David.  What a morning with slick calm conditions, no wind and toons of bonefish feeding and moving in the chilly 68 degree water temperatures.  After numerous shots at finicky bonefish David hooked three and landed two.  Nice!

I end this report fishing with Kent and Alex from Texas under some really tough conditions for two days.  Day one it rained on us 4 out of the 8 hours but Kent got a solid slob of a bonefish and then we took plenty of shots on fly at lemon sharks and Alex lost one on spin after the shark spit the hook.  Then we had Tuesday the 6th.  What brutal conditions with 20-25 MPH winds gusting to 30 MPH.  But, these guys are crazy and I am down to fish any weather condition so we fished a full day trip.  The first spot was dead and then we fished the other only spot we could fish and thankfully this is a mixed bag spot with a surprise built in.  The guys started to fish as we could see huge waves crashing over the distant sand bars.  One after another the fish starting coming to the boat, yellow jacks, jack crevasse, smaller mutton snappers and then a solid hook up and a screaming drag.  I knew what it was but I stayed quite until we saw silver come to the boat, bonefish!  This was just the beginning as the riots stayed bent, drags kept screaming and 18 bonefish were landed out of 20 hooked.  What?!  What a day!!!!  This was incredible and the guys were more than happy.  As for me, I was ecstatic!  Definitely a new record for me best two 16 bonefish trips I've had in the past.
