April 24, 2014 Report

Derald and sons Nielsen and Dylon from California climbed aboard for a mixed bag of fish. We started off tarpon fishing and immediately Nielsen hooks up to 90lb tarpon but loses it after the third jump. A bot later, dad hooks up to a big tarpon on fly and after a long fight he lands his 100lb tarpon on fly. We ended the day catching trout. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

Greg and dad Rich boarded my skiff today for fly fishing for bones, permit and tarpon. We found plenty of big tarpon rolling and cruising but in spite of some good casts they would not eat. Moving to bones and permit we found plenty of fish and had over 2 dozen shots at bones and about 6 shots at permit but the few that tracked the fly refused to eat. Capt. Tom and Cal were on board today for fishing the flats for the big three (bonefish, tarpon and permit). Last time we fished Cal landed a 10lb bonefish so we were ready for part two. We had some great conditions today and had shots at all three. We started fishing the leeward side of a key and found a few bones but no hook ups. Moving a bit south a string of south bound migrating tarpon pop up and one breaks the school to chase Cal's shrimp but refuses to eat at the last minutes. The day ended with us taking shots at a few more bones, permit and strings of tarpon but they weren't eating well today. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

Today I fished with Drew and we were fly fishing for bonefish. We had some nice conditions and had some shots at bonefish on fly but no hook ups. We ended the day taking some shots at a few bones riding stingrays and mudding as we poled off the flat. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

For several years now Sid and I have been taking Chloe and Bailey out fishing while uncle Sid is in town from California and the girls are always a pleasure. Idling out of the marina, Bailey got to drive the boat out of the no wake zone while Chloe enjoyed the ride. Once we started fishing the action was constant with a cloud of snappers behind the boat providing the girls with spunky tussles including some that were spunkier than others. Having kids on the boat is always a treat for me reminding me of the great times I have had with my own daughter. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

April 14, 2014 AM & PM Report

AM Report The morning started with Ken aboard for a half day of fishing around Key Biscayne. With the lack of heavy boat traffic from yesterday we were on the search for tarpon. We did see a few fish roll and bust the surface but no hook ups. We did have a big hit on one of the rods and it turned out to be a BIG ladyfish that peeled drag on the tarpon outfit. We moved to a flat that holds trout and tarpon and again the tarpon were there, swimming by the boat and occasionally busting on the surface but no hook ups. As we fished for trout Ken hooks a snapper and just a few feet from the boat about a 90lb tarpon rushes in and tries eat the still hooked snapper! What a rush! We ended the day catching several trout around 20" and Ken lost a BIG trout close to the boat as we were packing up to head to the marina.
PM Report My afternoon trip was with Dave and PY from MA. Both great guys escaping the harsh north winter they've endured this year. A quick run to the finger channels provided steady action on a variety of species including mangrove snapper and a short black grouper. To wrap up the day we worked a few areas for tarpon and while they were present rolling on the surface, no bites were to be had. The last stops were for trout where PY landed a nice trout before we called it a day. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

Bob and Bill finished their Sunday morning conference meeting and zipped to the marina for some relaxation. We were looking for tarpon and trout amidst the flurry of boat activity that crowded the north part of the bay today. While there were no tarpon to be found the trout fishing picked up and at one point we hooked up consistently on all three rods. The sea trout have been on the larger side for us with 20" fish rather common now. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

April 9, 2014 Report

Today was the second consecutive year I fish the Bonefish Bonnies flats tournament out of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. This is always a fun tournament with some great ladies to boot! Today Mary and Libby were aboard to fish the afternoon leg of the tournament with the target species being bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and redfish. We had our work cut out for us with 20-25 MPH winds forcing us to be very limited in where we fished. With snook and redfish out of the picture due to the heavy winds battering their hideouts, we focused on bonefish and permit. Making a short run north I tucked us behind some mangroves where I know bonefish cruise through and we waited. Not long after, Libby makes a cast, the rod doubles over and the reel sings. Bonefish! We landed her bonefish and waited. A big school of big bonefish moves in and Mary made some good casts but the school stayed 15' too far from our best efforts. As time ticked on with a lines out of 3:30pm, another few singles move in but no hook ups. Suddenly, Libby's rod doubles, the reel screams and then goes silent. We lost our second bonefish! We ended the day with a short and more comfortable ride back. Not sure what the final standings are yet but it was fun being a part of this great tournament. Capt. April 8, 2014 Report

Steve and his two daughters Ellen and Jaimeson had tried some offshore fishing yesterday and today was the day for inshore fishing. Good move as the winds today were much higher than yesterday. We had consistent 20 MPH winds with gusts up to 25MPH ahead of an approaching cold front. All the tarpon spots were blown out so we decided to fish for sea trout. Right off the bat Jaimeson hooks a nice black tip shark and after a nice fight, gets it to the boat where it breaks off. We spent the rest of the trip catching trout including some in the 20" range. We ended with a ride back in some nasty chop but comfortable thanks to the ride of my Hewes. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

April 6, 2014 Report

Today, Tennessee native Ammon was on board for tarpon and other fishing action. The tarpon fishing remained slow but we did have a smaller fish hit one of the baits but no hook ups. We were limited by the wind but pressed on and switched gears. We ended up catching some nice trout while avoiding the wind. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

April 2, 2014 Report

Nelson was on board again for day two and this time we were chasing tarpon, bones and permit. The fishing was slow over all only finding one group of rolling tarpon in the early morning. Later on we had a few shots at bonefish including four fish that were milling around a white sand spot but unfortunately no hook ups. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

April 1, 2014 AM & PM Reports

AM Report Nelson was down from Atlanta and brought his daughter Veronica and friend Kate along on our 1/2 day morning trip. We started looking for tarpon but the cold front that passed through put the fish down and while we found some, they weren't interested in eating. We switched to something more exciting for the girls and went looking for trout. They caught some trout including a very respectable fish landed by Veronica who had the hot hand today.
PM Report The afternoon brought Tyler, Judd and their dad Brent for an afternoon of fishing the bay. We started with tarpon and they were all but gone. We pressed on and found some tarpon laid up in the lee of a current and had quite a few shots at them but no takers. These fish were resting and moving slowly with their massive dorsal fins out of the water. Some were rolling occasionally or cruising by. Eager to ensure they caught fish while avoiding the wind as much as possible, we fish two flats for trout and they ended up catching some BIG trout. Tyler, Judd and Brent were great folks who caught fish, had great conversations and made my afternoon a pleasure. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

Today I had Dave and Nick from South Africa. Dave is one of the members of very cool electronic band Goldfish www.GoldfishLive.com and was down in Miami playing at Ultra. This is the second year we fish together and it is always a lot of fun. We started looking for tarpon and finally found some cruising and rolling fish. Nick and Dave took a bunch of shots at these fish and we got two to eat Unfortunately, we missed the hook set on both. Since it was windy and overcast, we had to forgo Dave's desire to look for bonefish and instead wanted to pursue seatrout as we did last year. Nick and Dave caught trout, some on fly but the highlight was the tarpon we hooked. I had mentioned to them there had been tarpon holding on this flat and sure enough Dave hooks a 90lber and gets one amazing jump out of him. After that, it was a tug of war for 15 minutes until the fish beat us to some barnacle encrusted stakes and cut us off. Wow, that hurts! Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

The high winds continue but Greg and Drew were down in Key Largo for a get together and wanted to hit the water and have good time. We tried bonefishing for a bit but with high winds and dark clouds above, conditions were rather tough. They decided to try something different and we anchored in a favorite channel of mine and had a blast catching snappers, bar jacks and losing a few fish that were more that we could handle on 10lb class tackle and locked drags. One of the heart breakers was Greg losing a nice grouper right next to the boat. Ouch! Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

March 26, 2014 Report

This has been a rough week with winds in the 30-40 MPH range and lots of charter cancellations. Never the less, Aaron and his son Jake braved 30-35 MPH winds and we fished the leeward side of the few areas we could find. Jake caught his biggest fish to date and the smile on his face and the fire that sparked in him was absolutely worth the very tough conditions. We caught sea trout on artificial lures and Jake did a great job casting, working the lure and fighting the fish all on his own! Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

March 22, 2014 Report

After a great week or so of a tarpon bite, Bill was aboard for a half day of fishing Biscayne Bay. Conditions were tough with dark clouds, rain and windy. We worked an area that had been giving up tarpon almost daily but very slow. We moved off to fish for snapper and grouper but a small spinner shark is all the bay would give up there. The day ended on some trout flats where we caught some trout. Over all, a very slow day but today was one of those trips where you meet someone that is a great person and Bill is one of those people. We had a great time, sometimes even missing a few fish because we were engrossed in or conversation. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com
