Some Guys Just Have it June 8, 2021

I had the pleasure of fishing Chris and Ericka this morning.  They are from Texas and run a great inshore fishing charter service in Galveston, TX https://justcastcharters.com/  These were great people and great fisherman/woman to boot!  Well, long story short Chris wanted snook as they don't catch snook in TX.  Within the first hour that was checked off the list but not before Ericka kad outfished him on other species.  With my eye on the tide it was time to move and target tarpon.  Setting up and not long after Chris had a nice permit in the boat and followed that up with a 120lb tarpon.  WOW!  We wrapped it up fishing for bonefish as I was desperate for them to get a super grand slam but we only had a few shots that didn't materialise.  Man what a day but I still wanted that bonefish!

This is what I like! June 7, 2021

I like days/reports like these.  I had Don from PA today and he really wanted to target tarpon.  The main spot was still about an hour and a half way from prime time but I found some tarpon at another spot.  They did the typically tarpon thing, roll, look at our baist and ignore them.  Ha, just you wait tarpon!  Once we had the right tide I took Don to spot I like and after some patience, mainly on my part, Don hooks an 80lb tarpon.  Getting the fish out in open water we both thought we were in the clear until the tarpon, just 20' from the boat spits the hook.  We tried it again and Don hooked up again but this time the fish spits the hook on a massive jump.  Urgh!  Finally deciding to change it up after it slowed down we looked for bonefish where Don got his first bonefish and then we missed a second bite.  Way to go Don!

Sometimes this happens June 5, 2021

It's unusual this time of year but I was off for three days in a row but I didn't mind since I had to take the skiff in for some well deserved service.  Back on the water with Brennan today where we were targeting bonefish with a mix of spin and fly.  It was really windy, unusual for June, and the fishing was slow as we struck out at the first two spots.  The last spot of the trip paid off and Brennan had a few shots at bonefish on fly but didn't hook up.  I don't like these types of reports.

This kid is on fire! June 1, 2021

After seeing the craziness of Memorial Day weekend I decided to reschedule my Sunday charter and I felt much better but I was back to work today with Jeff, Drew and Will.  So far Drew has been on fire catching his first snook and bonefish on our last few trips and today was no different.  Tarpon was first on the list but they were definitely MIA today compared to the decent numbers we saw on Friday.  After the failed Tarpon mission I took them to an area where the fishing has been good and there has been a surprise for some of my anglers but I didn't tell them this.  All three guys were busy catching nice yellow jacks, horse eye jacks, look downs, snappers and then Drew struck again as the surprise materialised in the way of a nice fight and a silver flash next to the boat.  Drew got his first permit!  In the end the fishing was so good the guys smoked through 120 baits.  At the same spot we hooked three black tip sharks but they got off and the day ended on the flats going another 0-2 on lemon sharks.

As if it couldn't get any worst! May 30, 2021

Wow, wow!  Yesterday it took me 45 minutes to launch the boat and today it took me an hour.  I was at the boat ramp at 5:45am well before they open and there was already a long line but I was able to launch and get on the water with Andy and his 9 year old boy Jonah.  I repeated yesterdays game plan and it worked out with the guys catching a ton of fish and Jonah learning how to cast, hook and land his fish on his won.  They were a blast and there are few kids as funny as Jonah. All in all in was pretty quite out on the bay with most fishermen staying home and the partyers sticking to the sand bars, it turned out to be not bad at all once I left the marina.  Now time to get home and wait for the weekend craziness to end.

Memorial Day Mayhem May 29, 2021

This is the trip that almost didn't happen and I called Eric to tell him he may have to turn around and go home.  The marinas were completely packed and our 7am charter was on the verge of not happening as I stood in line for 45 minutes to launch the boat with only a few parking spaces left.  But, I got in, launched the boat and once we left the marina the bay was actually really quiet.   Eric had his dad Daniel and sister Alina on board as we went to our first spot of the day.  There they caught a bunch of snappers and Daniel landed a massive barracuda that somehow ate his hooked fish, hooked itself and never cut off the 30ln flouro leader.  Wow!  Then we hit the flats where Daniel again shined catching another big barracuda and a nice lemon shark before we headed back.

They continue the streak May 28, 2021

And so it continues as Jeff got his son Drew two days of fishing with me as a present for graduating high school and Drew's brother Will was with us this time.  Drew wanted a tarpon but we found them and they refused to eat so off we went.  Fishing a few different spots they stayed busy catching jacks, yellow jacks, mutton snappers and snook with Drew catching his first snook.
