June 29, 2015 Report (Tarpon)

With tarpon season over, the remaining fish are resident fish but equally fun and Bill from the S.F. Giants baseball team had never caught a tarpon. Well, we had to give tarpon fishing a try. Spot one had some rollers but no takers so we moved to spot two. Spot two would be the magic spot and Bill would hook into one about 50lbs that tested the drag and Bill as he fought his fish in windless 90 degree weather. After a 25 minute fight we got his first tarpon to the boat and celebrated the well earned release. Congrats Bill!

Gary and his two boys, Adam and Jake, are local regular clients and hopped aboard with one goal, get the kids some fish and a shark. Shark fishing started slow so we switched off to smaller game and the kids kept the rods bent catching fish after fish including a high flying barracuda until they were ready for more shark fishing. I took them to a flat I like to sight cast smaller sharks and had a blast hooking 3 foot sharks. They had a blast and got their sharks!

Mike and his girlfriend Florenia jumped aboard and I found out she had never caught a fish. So, I had to change that today. Fishing was generally slow but they each caught trout and then we hit the flats. After a hit and no hook up Mike's rod doubles over and the next 25 minutes were foused on landing his 5' lemon shark, about 130 lbs. Now it was Florenia's turn. I took them to a spot I like for snappers and there she landed a few fish before we had to head in to avoid storms. Mike told she she was probably hooked on fishing now. Mission accomplished!

Ryan is from Oklahoma and was in town for a wedding and wanted to squeeze in a 3/4 day trip so off we went. Finding no tarpon we fished for sea trout and the bite was on fire! Almost every cast had a seatrout hoked and coming to the boat. This went on for over an hour. After the seatrout blitz we decided to hit the flats for sharks. Getting one bite but no hook up we kept at it and were rewarded with a bent rod and 100 yards worth of drag scorching shark on the other end. After a 40 minute battle Ryan released a solid 5' lemon shark. What a way to end a great day!

Today I was in North Key Largo for a full day trip with Adam and Jonathan. We targeted a number of different species but the best was left for last. At the end of the trip we decided to shark fish and caught one but on the small side. With time running out I see a big shadow move in and sure enough, a big lemon shark. It swims over our baits, picks one up and we're off to the races. Just a few feet from the boat he bit through the wire and missed leadering the 5' shark. Geeze!

Locals Diaa and his girlfriend Leandra jumped aboard for a half day trip of inshore fishing, something they had not done before. Although the fishing was generally slow we did catch sea trout and an assortment of snappers throughout the bay. These were fun folks that I look forward to fishing with again. Capt. Josh and James joined me today on a 3/4 day charter under gorgeous skies. We found some early morning redfish but no hook ups. Switching tactics we fished for trout and had some nice fish on but lost them all. The day ended with countless shots at tailing redfish in super shallow water. Capt. Cousins Basil, John and Jorge are from N.J. and never go fishing so they wanted to try something new and fishing would be the activity of the day. These guys were a blast and Basil kept count of every fish in order to ensure an accurate count to determine the winner for the day. Well, turns out Basil had the biggest and the most fish of the day; until John reeled in the biggest trout of the day. Jorge yelled out that the car ride back would be much more tolerable now! the fishing was good but the company was better, these guys were fun!

June 15, 2015 Report

After a much needed vacation, I was back on the water today with Josh. We were looking for tarpon but found very few and got no bites. So, with half the trip almost over we decided to change tactics. Fishing a small tarpon and snook spot Josh caught a few jacks on artificial when one of the rods goes off and line starts to scream. At the end of the battle a massive snook came aboard and filled two objectives at once, Josh's first snook and his biggest. Ok Josh, time to check that one off the list!

Philip and his son Kristen are locals but don't fish as often as they would like. Today however, that would change. The first spot was slow but spot number two produced right away and we didn't have to move the rest of the trip. Kristen eventually had to take a break from the hot action and Philip caught a nice shark that kept circling the wreck. Philip and Kristen decided to head in early and Philip's comment to me was "you kicked his butt." That's what it's all about! Capt. June 6, 2015 Report

Today was the last day Paul and Neil would be fishing before going back to Maryland and as always we had a blast. While we didn't hook any tarpon today, we did mix it up and caught a number of different species on lighter tackle. I can't wait for them to come down again next year. Capt. The Paul and Neil show continued today and the fishing kept slowing down. However, we did hook a tarpon and Paul fought it for a bit until the hook pulled during the final stages of the fight. The day ended by fishing a few wrecks for snapper. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBonefishing

June 4, 2015 Report (Tarpon!)

With the weather forecast looking absolutely horrible we made the call to cancel our trip on Wednesday only to find great weather. Urgh! Oh well, we hit the water today and Paul got another nice tarpon to the boat while Neil lost a few others to spit hooks. These guys are great and tomorrow we continue our adventures.

Day two with Paul and Neil and the tarpon fishing was slow. Amazing how things change one day to the next! We did get a hook up but lost the fish after a brief fight. Changing tactics we caught trout and snappers before continuing our tarpon adventure tomorrow. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

June 1, 2015 Report (Tarpon!)

Paul and Neil fished with me for 5 days last year and we had a blast last year so I couldn't wait to fish with them again. We started early and had a solid day going 2-7 on tarpon with both Paul and Neil getting their fish of the week at around 140-150lbs each. We had a blast, the tarpon bite was on and hooked into some real bruisers. This is what tarpon season is all about!

May 31, 2015 Report

Local angler and regular client Alec and his brother Kevin were aboard this morning for a chance at bonefish, tarpon and permit. The early morning began tarpon fishing but with 3 hours fading without a bite we ran down to the flats. Things were slower than anticipated but at the end a school of big mudding bonefish pops up. I point them out, Alec sees them, makes a precision cast and I see the school move over the bait and mud! I scream "reel!", Alec reels and comes tight to a big bonefish. The school spooks into the channel and his fish follows, peeling line at break neck speed. Suddenly the fish does a 180 and heads towards a stretch of coral heads and before I could jump off the platform and follow the fish with the motor he cut us off. NO! We ended the day with a shot at a nice permit. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

Twelve year old Elliott, his dad Andy and his grandfather Bill jumped aboard to spend a few hours fishing together. The weather was great and the plan was to get Elliott on fish early and often. The first spot was slow but spot #2 was good with fish coming in as soon as the bait hit the water. The rods stayed bent, Elliott caught a bunch of fish and we had a ton of laughs. This was a nice break from tarpon fishing and great to have these guys aboard.

May 29, 2015 Report (Tarpon)

Two time U.S. Olympian skater Evan and his girlfriend German national team skater Kavita boarded my skiff at 6am and off we went tarpon fishing. Within seconds of dropping a bait in the water Evan was on to a hot 150lb tarpon that ran over 150 yards and jumped about a dozen times. Fifteen minutes into the fight the hook broke and we lost his tarpon. Urgh! We spent the rest of the morning fishing for smaller game where Kavita not only caught her first fish but the most fish and is now hooked on fishing. We got it done Evan! ;)

May 28, 2015 Report AM & PM Reports (Tarpon)

AM Report Henry and his friend Daniel were in town from Argentina and wanted to fly fish in Biscayne Bay. It's May, let's go! We started the day tarpon fishing and Henry hooks a massive 150lber right next to the boat and the fish is jumping within a few feet of the boat. After a bruising 45 minute fight including numerous scorching runs, jumps and trying to get us in some pilings the tarpon got us under a boat and broke us off. With the wind howling we had one spot in Biscayne Bay to look for bonefish but in spite of our best efforts there were no bones to be found. We did get a number of shots at sharks on fly but they would not eat.
PM Report Alejandro and Victor from Chile jumped aboard for an afternoon tarpon trip but the bite continued slow and we did get any bites. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

May 27, 2015 Report (Tarpon Video)

Local anglers Rick and his 15 year old son Ricky and I headed out today in Rick's boat for a morning tarpon trip. The bite was slow but then it turned on and Ricky was on to a 120lb tarpon that he fought for about an hour. Ricky did a great job fighting his fish and we got the leader release before breaking off. Congrats Ricky!
