Mark caught what? August 29, 2021

Michael and Mark booked me for a half day of catching dinner but I have to admit, I was sweating it this trip.  The first three spots we fished usually produce but not today.  At the third spot Mark caught two fun sized barracudas but still no dinner.  Dang!  Once the tide turned I took them to spot number 4 where they finally scored with a bunch of snappers and jacks but the trophy was Mark hooking something that fought different and when he got it next to the boat it was a small permit!  Wow!  I've caught permit at this spot before but it was still a nice surprise.  Sure it wasn't a monster but a permit is a permit is a permit.  Nice work Mark!

First timer scores early August 19, 2021

I had a last minute change of plans for Christian and his son Christian.  With the breezy morning I took advantage of the tide and fished for bonefish as Christian wanted, wait which of the two Christians?  Anyway, dad hooked up and landed a nice bonefish.  As the tide continued on it's way out the fishing got slower.  I decided to end the trip by working different flats but they were pretty slow.  I would have loved a few more bonefish but I can tell you Christian was on a high getting his first bonefish and so was I.

High School Grad Reward August 15, 2021

JD from N.J. graduated high school and wanted to come to Miami to fish as his graduation present.  Ha, good kid making good choices!  He came along with his dad Jeff and we mixed it up.  We started by fishing for a few tarpon I marked on my Raymarine but no bites so we moved on where Jeff lost a huge 30lb snook that ate right next to the boat.  Wow!  Then we wrapped up the day catching snappers and bonefishing but the bonefish were MIA.

Bonefish Fest August 13, 2021

It was Worth's birthday tomorrow so he got to fish with his dad Steven today.  The guys just wanted to catch some fish not caring what it was.  Well, we had to work it carefully because tropical depression soon to be storm Fred was offshore and heading our way.  The spots we fished were slow, at least not what I am used to.  The TN guys were hooking fish such as jacks and snappers but it was not red hot as I expected.  With 40 minutes left I told them we would go for the home run and bonefish.  Well, well that worked out.  As the trip was coming to and end and the rain bands began to move in the guys hooked four bonefish and got a double header in 15 minutes before we headed back trying to outrun a few storms.  WOW!!!!

Oh so close, really! August 12, 2021

The life of a fishing guide is full of surprises and challenges and the last two days have been an example of this.  Yesterday I fished with a dad and small children and today I fished with Scott looking for bonefish on fly.  Wow, what a change.  Anyway, it was windy and I miss the calm August mornings we are supposed to be enjoying.  Scott and I fished two spots for bonefish with the first one being slow.  The second one worked out as we saw fish moving through consistently and Scott had numerous shots at fish.  We saw a school of bonefish move in and he madea good cast, he got a bite, strip set and he was on, to a barracuda!  Come on!!!!  Geeze!!!!  A few more shots later and we had to call it a day so he can make it back on time.

Kids Messing Around August 11, 2021

Sam, Sammy, Leah and Lilly boarded my skiff today.  We've been fishing together for years now and the kids keep getting bigger each year.  After catching a few smaller fish we hit the flats where they tore it up on sharks.  It was awesome!

The sniper was on my skiff August 10, 2021

Joe and Ed were in for a full day today of fly fishing for bonefish and permit.  It hasn't been calm in the mornings as is typical of August so we had to do it the hard way.  The first few spots were slow but we did see a few schools of bonefish moving through.  Ed hooked up twice on shrimp but they turned out to be bonnet head sharks as we tried to maximize the time in spite of the nasty storm moving right towards us.  As the storm cell approached I made a run to another flat and there we saw a permit but no real shot at it.  Then I see a school of bonefish moving at 10 o'clock right at us.  I yell out direction and distance to Joe and he makes a great cast to the school and immediately hooks up.  After releasing the first bonefish of the day it got real slow for the remainder of the incoming tide.  When the tide turned we fished a new favorite flat on this tide stage and we found about a half dozen schools of bonefish mudding.  After a number of shots on shrimp Ed wasn't able to hook up but Joe got a quick throw of the fly and hooked a second bonefish that ended up spitting the fly.

These kids rock August 9, 2021

Today I had Steph and his boys George and Michael.  These guys have been fishing with me for years and they were back.  I took the boys 7 and 8 years old to a spot for them to catch snappers and they had a blast.  Then they reminded me they hadn't visited the flats before so off we went to shark fish the flats.  Well, that worked out!  Not long after setting up we had about 12 sharks behind the boat at any given time.  The process was simple, cast a bait, give it 60-90 seconds, watch them eat, fight the shark, repeat.  It was awesome and the sharks were all perfect size for the boys.  What a great day with these guys today.

Finishing on a high note August 2, 2021

I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow and I was wrapping up my work week with regular local client Tom.  He wanted to fish in the Everglades for redfish so off we went.  This is a lure only fishery for me so we did just that and I set up on a spot I like early in the morning as the tide began to flood the area.  Two casts in Tom hooks a nice snook and then repeated that numerous times this morning.  At first he was skeptical of fishing lures only, especially the one I handed to him but a few fish in he admitted he was starting to become a believer.  We did see a few reds mud around the boat but they must have missed seeing our lures presented to them because we never got a bite.  At the end of the trip Tom had released about a dozen snook, lost a few more and missed a few more bites (which is normal when throwing lures in the area).  Cool, now I get to leave on vacation on a high note.

Mom son competition August 1, 2021

Jennifer and her son boarded the skiff and I thought "Oh cool, a mom taking her son fishing."  Nope, this was a cool mom that loves fishing and was ready to compete against her son.  These folks were great and we had such a good time.  They caught snappers, jacks, barracudas, and more fishing only two spots.  Jennifer decided to end early but not after I took them to a sandbar where they could jump in and cool off.
