February 27, 2014 AM and PM Report

The morning started ominous with dark clouds, high water and a stiff wind, not good conditions for hunting bonefish and permit on the flats. In spite of this, Tom and Cal hung tough and in good spirits. Tom had a couple of shots on fly at a cruising permit but to takes. Later Cal had a couple of shots at a fun baby tarpon but no hook ups. A few shots at a couple of bones resulted in zero. Fourth quarter and two minutes left in the game and we decided to change tactics. A few minutes before we had to head in one of the rods doubles over and the reel starts to scream. Several long bonefish runs later, Cal holds his first ever bonefish, a big 10 pounder. Yep, he's spoiled now. Congrats Cal! My afternoon trip was with Greg and Tracy from Pennsylvania and we had a nice laid back trip. Anchoring in a creek we caught a number of snappers and got rocked up by a few mystery fish. A big 5' baracuda settled under the boat and ate our offering three times, each time missing the hook intended for him. We ended the day with the winds laying down, the bay becoming glass calm and tarpon rolling all around us. February 26, 2014 Everglades Report

On a guides day off I got to fish a little bit with good friend Grant. In the mirror calm morning we caught trout on soft plastics, had shots a big redfish and tarpon and saw tons of big sharks. Chad and Lori from Nevada occupied the bow this morning in search of bonefish. Boy did we see them! We must have seen over 150 b0nefish today with tons of shots at them. February 18, 2014

Joe and Medford from Alabama were on board for some bonefishing and bending rods. We started looking for bones and finding one but no shot at him. With thickening cloud cover we switched gears and fished for snapper and grouper but that was hampered by a big 5' baracuda sitting under the boat eating everything we hooked. February 16, 2014 Report

Taking a break from working the Miami International Boat Show, I had Lisa and six year old Abbey on board this morning for a half day of shark fishing the flats. It was a gorgeous cool morning in the low 50's and clear skies. On flat number one we chummed for sharks and had over a dozen on the flat but the larger 6 footers wouldn't come close and others would swim past our baits. Weird! We changed flats and once the tide so did the shark behavior and the action began. We had four eat and one hook up which we landed. Lisa did a great job fighting the strong, fast lemon shark and we released it after the obligatory photo op. Cool morning, lots of shark action and great people on board. Off to the boat show!

February 11, 2014 AM & PM Reports

Local resident and client Rob played hookie today and sat in my skiff instead of his office chair. With calm winds we went tarpon fishing off South Beach. Once again we found hundreds of tarpon getting an estimated 120lber to eat. After a 15 minute fight he broke the hook. Yes, a 4x, thick gauge circle hook! We then moved to the finger channels and caught grouper and missed a few others. Trout was next on the agenda and we caught quite a few including this monster and lost another of equal size that jumped and spit the hook plus lady fish and had three 80lb tarpon laid up next to the boat.

In the afternoon I had Mike and Brian for a relaxed afternoon of fishing and we caught trout, bluefish and jacks. Mike thought it was cool that we were catching fish while looKing at his waterfront condo. I thought that was pretty cool too. We ended the trip with a fast run back to the boat ramp in the dark.

February 8, 2014 Report

Another gorgeous day today and David and Ashok were in for a half day. In-spite of the weather, today was a challenging day. We had only frozen bait, no bait shops in South Dade had live bait, tons of boat traffic and unfortunately, rude boaters/anglers on the water. With no time to look for live pilchards, we started bonefishing but it was slow seeing only one fish in the hour we allocated for bonefish. Anchoring in a favorite creek of mine we drop one bait in and seconds later it gets slammed and lose the big grouper to the rocks. Seconds later a boat anchors 100' from us. Geeze. Drop another bait, SLAM, lose another big grouper to the rocks. Another boat anchors 100' on my other side. Getting REALLY crowded. Pull anchor, leave the scene. We anchor in another small channel I like and almost immediately get bait and snappers behind the boat. The frozen bait is barely staying on the hook but we manage a nice snapper only to have a barracuda slice half of it off right next to the boat. We started landing some fish and getting some solid hits when a boat runs right up our chum slick, spooks everything behind the boat and buzzes us 20' to our side at full speed. Ashok eventually had his hands full with about a 5lb specimen that put up a fight on 8lb tackle along with some smaller fish. Capt. Mo Estevez www.NewDawnCharters.com

February 7, 2014 Report

Sneaking in some fishing time before a 7 day cruise, Ron left the cold in Minnesota and boarded my skiff in shorts. Tarpon were the target early morning and they were exactly where they should be. We fished two different spots for tarpon and found plenty of them in both. There were schools of them rolling, flipping and jumping but not feeding. Several times the schools were a rod length away from us and hundreds swimming under the boat in crystal clear water. Despite our best efforts we could not get them to eat. We moved and caught trout ending the day in the finger channels. We caught snapper and grouper in the channels losing a few nice fish to the bottom. We had gorgeous weather and had a great time. February 6, 2014 AM and PM Reports

The morning started off with Jessica, Jennie and Erin from the Office Depot Foundation and the goal was to have a good time, enjoy the sun and catch some fish. Our first spot provided tons of rolling and flipping tarpon but no hook ups. Moving inshore we caught trout and mackerel and ended the day with Jennie catching her first fish and learning how to cast a spinning rod. What a great trip!

The afternoon found Mike, his father Richard and his girlfriend Charlie aboard to end his streak of dissapointing shorebound fishing. The finger channels were on fire with a cloud of big mangrove snappers behind the boat and grouper further back in the slick. After catching snappers up to 3lbs and grouper, Mike wanted trout. So trout it was and we hooked three trout, one larger then the prior one but only landing the smallest of the three. Mike will eat well tonight!

Trent from Michigan was aboard today for a half day of fun in South Biscayne Bay. We started with having some shots at bonefish and then a big shark moved onto the flat. I made a cast and hooked it only to lost it within seconds. Trent decided he had enough of bonefishing and wanted to chase something bigger and meaner. After having numerous 4'-6' sharks around the boat in 3' of water, we finally hooked up to a powerful 4' blacktip shark. Ofcourse, he hit the lighter 10lb rod and Trent was on for a ride. After an hour fight, we lost him at boat side as he made a last ditch effort under the boat and cut off Trent with one of the trim tabs. Ouch! Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com

Local resident David decided to invest time in his kids and take them fishing, and boy did JJ and Ava fish! The tip started out a bit slower than I would like but in the process Ava hooked and lost a really nice fish that was peeling line but cut her off on a rock ledge. After making a few moves we hit the jackpot and they were catching fish almost as fast as I could release their fish and rebait their hooks. Seeing their smiles is what it's all about. Capt. David was back aboard today with Matt from N.Y. for some laid back fishing in Biscayne Bay. While there were no trout to be found, we did catch mackerel, snappers and a big surprise for Matt at the end of our trip. With 20 minutes left before heading in one of the rods doubles over and the drag sings non-stop for a full minute! With the fish somewhat under control and Matt gaining some line the tug of war began and soon after I put the net under a healthy bonefish. Matt got his first bonefish, enjoyed the sleigh ride that is a bones' initial run and released the fish the moment we had to start heading in. What a way to end the day! Capt.
