December 26, 2018 AM & PM Report

AM Report Gonzalve and I started off our morning hunting tarpon in the few spots the wind would allow but those pesky tarpon weren't around. Along the way we found a school of big "by our standars" bluefish and had a blast catching them on artificial lures.
PM Report For my afternoon trip I had Alan and the two boys Josh and Andrew. The wind got worst so we were even more limited where we could fish so I took them to where I had caught a bunch of bluefish but they were gone. We fished about spot and that one worked out with the boys catching some jacks, a nice mackerel and losing a big bull shark.

AM Report Back on David's boat today with a hilarious crew of Kevin, Ari and Mark. Fishing was horrible but it was one of those cases where we hardly noticed because we were laughing so hard throughout the trip. PM Report My afternoon trip was with Rob and his boy Deklin. Thankfully the fishing was much better and the guys caught a ton of fish including hooking over 9 bull sharks. Capt. Bonefish on fly was the game today with Raja and Sam inspite of a brisk north westerly wind and a chilly morning in the 50's. I took them to a point I like fishing in the lee of the wind and had plenty of shots. When the tide got too high we had to move off but now the wind got worst so we fished the flats for sharks and Raja got a nice one.

Well, it finally happened aboard David's boat today, we finally landed a nice bull shark. It had been an ordeal because of a number of issues, primarily, reaction time. Using a windless is not conducive to picking up anchor quickly and pursuing a hot and furious bull shark but we got it done with the right personnel and game plan. The ultimate winner was Ollie from Canada and a big sigh of relief for us.

December 16, 2018 Report (Bonefish Video)

Jarrod is from Florida's west coast and on his way to the Navy so he really wanted to catch a bonefish before he left. With overcast skies, a low tide and slick calm conditions I knew the fishing would be good and it didn't disappoint! Jarrod had tons of shots at bones and got two nice fish, his first a 10lber and the second an 8lber. He got spoiled and will never be the same again! Capt. Adan hasn't fished with me in a few years but his schedule finally worked out and we hit the flats for bonefish on fly. With a cold front approaching we had a tough south wind that was supposed to be from the SW but that never happened. I got to the lee of an island and there we had some shots at bonefish but we also blew out quite a few since visibility was tough. As the wind started to shift, finally, it laid down a bit and I ran way south but once there it was a wasteland with very little activity so we called it a day early. Capt. Today I fished with Ken from CA and the goal was bonefish on fly. Conditions were definitely tough with a strong north wind courtesy of a cold front, cold conditions and marginal visibility. I decided to make a long run down to the only area we would have some factors in our favor and had quite a few shots at bones and had one eat the fly but didn't get hooked. Capt. AM Report Regular client Alain from France was back on board today and as always, he wanted sharks. The bull sharks were present but picky and after getting a bunch of bites but no hook ups we ran to the flats where he caught a nice cuda and two sharks.
PM Report My afternoon trip today was with Andy and Ben and we stayed close to the marina and had a blast. They caught a ton of fish and fought a big bull shark for about an hour before the hook pulled. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

It's cold in Cincinnati so Ron and Duke came to Miami to warm up and do some fishing. With better conditions than yesterday we didn't have to go far to get in on the action. The guys caught a ton of hard fighting jacks while we waited for the show to begin and it didn't take long. After numerous bites and failed hook ups we finally hooked a nice bull shark and the guys had a blast fighting it. Capt. On the heels of a cold front I hit the water today with John armed with a flay rod and wanting to go bonefishing. We had tough conditions with high winds, thick cloud cover and an outgoing tide. Back on the "Sababa" with David and we headed offshore under great conditions. Turns out it was pretty slow. We fished everywhere from 500' water in to about 120' and there wasn't much life and none of the boats around us were hooking up so we made a move. Arriving at the port of Miami we marked sharks and David hooked up to a nice blacktip that jumped, spun and broke him off. Urgh... Capt. November 24, 2018 Report (Tarpon video)

I love father/daughter trips and I had the pleasure of fishing with former Olympic skier Cory and his 14 year old daughter Katrina. He really wanted to get her on some fish and I did too, but with perfect conditions I had to make a stop first. Hitting the beach off South Beach for tarpon I found them and we tossed two baits back. Within a couple pf minutes Cory was on to a nice tarpon and got his first tarpon release after about 40 minutes. We wrapped up the trip focusing on Katrina where she caught the daylights out of fish and out fishing all the boats around us. Way to go girl!

AM Report Peter and Alex have fished with me before and today we were back at it. We got to one spot and that's all it took. Tons of jacks and 8 bull shark takes later we finally got a solid hookup and Alex was on it for the first hour. After the bull shark dragging us to a bridge and wrapping around a piling, we were able to free it and then Peter took over from there. After a massive 2 hour plus fight, we landed the big bull only to find that we had been foul hooked! PM Report My afternoon trip was with Dan and his 7 year old Jack. November 18, 2018 Report (Bonefish)

Local anglers David and Gerston wanted to check out the bay and learn a bit on how to fish it while focusing on snook, bonefish and permit. We got an early start out of Homestead and fished the creeks for snook but with a high tide, the snook were back deep into the mangroves and we didn't land any but caught jacks, ladyfish, snappers and barracudas on lures. With good visibility we hit the flats and things were slower than I had expected. However, I spotted a nice bonefish and the guys took a shot but missed. They reeled it up and when they went to recast, cloud cover moved in and I had them take another shot into the area and let the shrimp sit. Suddenly, Davids rod doubles over and his is on! After a nice fight David landed his first bonefish. The rest of the trip we focused on getting Gerston his but the conditions got worst and the fishing remained slow so we were done and headed in.

Bill and his friend were great to fish with today. The guys are from Philly and were in town for a conference so a day off is what they decided on in order to experience Miami's inshore fishing. The fishing was great today, especially since they wanted to try for bull sharks. At the first spot we caught a ton of jacks and turned one of them into bull shark bait. Not five minutes later the jack got engulfed by a big bull shark and the guys tag teamed the fish for over an hour. We were able to get good looks at it as it would come to the surface and cruise just feet from our bow and it was a solid 250 lb plus specimen. Over an hour into the fight the big bull broke us off and the guys took a breather while we set up for another one. No more bites by bull sharks so we wrapped it up at another spot where we hooked 5 and landed one black tip shark. These guys were great and they had me laughing all trip long! Capt. I got a late start today since Ted wanted to start at 8:30 and I had no problems with that since I could catch up on some much needed sleep. Ted was fly only so we found some tarpon but they refused all our fly offerings, that is just like tarpon sometimes. Then we hit the flats and although it started slow, the end of the incoming proved to be the best today giving us some shots at plenty of permit and a school of bonefish. In typical permit fashion, they refused our fly but we had tough conditions with a stiff breeze and constant annoying glare form cloud build up on the horizon. Capt. Back to work today with Chad from Utah and we were on the hunt using spin and fly. Spot one got Chad warmed up with jacks on fly and spot two we found a bunch of tarpon but we couldn't get them to eat a live bait. Spot three held no tarpon so we hooked two big bull sharks while we waited for the tide to turn. With the tide going out we targeted permit but they were MIA. We wrapped up the trip on the flats looking for bonefish but we only saw one school of small bones and the flats were dead today otherwise. Capt. Back on David's boat today with Howie as the guest. We tried something I hadn't done with David before and that was fishing the patch reefs that start to get really hot this time of year. We loaded up on bait and made a long run south to 15 feet of water, set up on a patch reef and started to chum. After a bit the rod started to bend and Howie landed grouper, mackerel, yellow tail snapper and a yellow jack. Heading back to the ramp we stopped off at another spot so David could break in his new Fin Nor Marquesa on a bull shark but we ended up losing all four sharks. BTW, the baits wouldn't last 5 minutes before they were devoured by the big bull sharks.

Mel and his wife Pat were in town from a cruise and these folks were hardcore. They woke up at 4 am when the ship docked, met me at the ramp at 11am and they were ready to go. I would've been exhausted by now but they were more than ready, did I mention they are 78 and 72 years young respectively? Wow! Mel wanted to catch some fish on fly so we stopped off at a jack spot where he caught a few and then bull sharks moved in and he said he wanted one of those as well. Well, I dropped back a jack and a few minutes later Mel had his hands full for the next 2 hours and 20 minutes. He landed his big bull shark at around 200 lbs and then we finished off catching a few more jacks on fly. What a goal for me, be like Mel at 78! Capt. November 4, 2018 Report (Permit video!)

I had Casey on board today from West Palm Beach and he brought his two friends along from California Jimmy and Scott. The goal was Tarpon, Bonefish and permit. We had the right tide for early morning permit fishing so we hit the first spot under cloudy skies, high winds and pretty rough water but first cast yielded a big 20-plus pound permit for Jimmy and the second cast yielded an equal sized permit for Scott. After a hot start we looked for Tarpon but only found a couple and then we wrapped it up bone fishing where we had a couple shots at just a couple of fish so we used some shrimp and jigs in the finger channels and landed some fun species before calling it a day. David is the cousin of a regular client of mine and wanted to catch sharks so David, Jessica and I were off and hit the flats right off the bat. The tide had just started to go out and it was slick calm with tons of sharks around. The sharks were finicky and wouldn't eat but David landed a nice barracuda along the way. We decided to cast net some bait that was being pounded by pelicans and with the live well full we hit a snapper spot where they caught some before we targeted bull sharks again. At the bull shark spot I put out a bait on a big rod and live chummed with the live bait, getting a ton of jacks exploding around the boat and keeping David busy for the few minutes before the bull shark hit. Once the bull shark ate, it was game on the we had to chase it down but deep into the run it broke us off. With just a few minutes left in the trip we kept targeting the sharks and jacks but only the jacks cooperated. David was in awe of the power and speed of the sharks and promised to come back for round two.

Brooklyn transplants Henry and Joe headed out with me today and we switched it up and focused on catching dinner. With a livewell full of pilchards we hit a wreck and live chumming had the snappers coming to the surface and exploding on the baits. After catching their dinner and having a blast we made a change to target the species Henry has been wanting to catch, jacks. Arriving at the next spot proved the ticket as the guys immediately hooked up and had a number of double headers on jacks to the point one of them had to take a break since the action was non stop. I asked them if they wanted to target bull sharks and they decided to focus on jacks. Well, the bull sharks arrived and ate three of our jacks as the guys were fighting them. What a trip!

David loves fishing and we were back on the water today with Barak. Barak had fished with us before so we were off to get bait. The goal was to fish offshore and so we did but the first spot we fished in 500' of water had so much current running through that we kept drifting through it before our baits could get into he strike zone. After a half dozen failed attempts we moved in shallower to 90' of water and we had the opposite problem. There was no current! Ok, what;s this all about? Moving a bit north and a bit deeper the current was sluggish but at least there was current. Immediately Barak hooks up and gets a nice fat mackerel next to the bot but it spits the hook before the gaff could come down on it. A few minutes later he was on again and this time there was no issues and a nice king fish comes aboard. Way to go Barak!

I've fished with Henry before and today he brought his friend Jake along. They were running late since Jake's flight was delayed so we did hit the water until 2pm. With bait on hand and a strong east wind we decided to hit the flats and repeat my last trip with Henry. The first flat was slow but the second flat was on fire with Henry wanting to target barracuda and sharks. As soon as a bait hit the water Jake was on to a nice cuda and Henry was hot on his heels hooked up as well The action continued for a while until the guys decided to target the sharks that were around. With time running out we tossed a few baits in front of them but they would spook. With two circling around I tossed a bait and let it sit. Our trip started on the hunt for tarpon but they were MIA and the strong 20 MPH winds kept us limited to where we could search for them. Changing it up we fish some structure and landed some nice snappers, but not for the table, they would be bait. On the way to the flats to shark and bonefish I stopped off at a spot I like and Justin landed a massive mutton snapper. Nice! I got a last minute call for a charter and met Barrett and Lauren at the marina at 7am. These guys were cool and their business is even cooler, they own and run a gym for horses! Heck, I learned horses can workout to the point where they develop a six pack in their abs! Well, we got some bait and decided to run straight south and avoid the weekend traffic. We really only had to fish two spots with the first one producing a ton of nice snapers and a grouper with Lauren out fishing Barrett. After this we hit the flats where we would wait for the visibility to improve before we bonefished. Once on the flats I spotted a school of shadows and cast a bait into it and Lauren immediately hooked up and seconds later Barrett was also hoked up. After a nice long fight, Lauren had a solid tasty yellow jack in the boat and Barrett landed a nice barracuda. They caught quite a few more barracudas and then we bonefished for the balance of the trip where they had shots a a solid school of big bones rushing the boat.

I was back on David's boat today on a last minute call and after getting some bait we headed offshore in some really nice conditions. The area I wanted to try was in 500' of water not far from the marina so it was a short run to the spot. Once there we tied on some lures and it was game on from the second drop of the lure in the water. The first fish was a blackfin tuna for David, his first. A few casts later I hook up and David tells me to fight the fish, so I did, until it was close to the boat and it spit the hook. Another cast and another fish on the broke me off at the same time David had gotten a bite but got broken off. Dang, we were out of lures and the live bait didn't work nearly as well. We looked for snook and tarpon but no go there so we changed it up and caught a bunch of nice jacks as we waited for a bite from the tarpon that were around the boat but on a diet. Capt. You never know who you'll fish fish and on board today was former boxer Jim and his son Ian. We hit a few spots in the early morning and struck out on snook and tarpon so I decided to head south and fish the central part of the bay. This turned out to be the tiket as they caught tons of snapper and lost a huge cuda that they hooked and skyrocketed into the air. Capt. I was looking to fishing with Kevin again and today he brought his son Zach and nephew Terrence. They wanted to target sharks so we caught some bait and hit the flats. Zack and Terrence each caught their sharks within minutes of setting up and then it got slow from there. After that we wrapped up the day using the rest of the bait catching snappers. Capt. David, Julian, Drew and I boarded David's boat, got bait and headed offshore. Setting up in 200' of water Drew immediately hooked a monster fish that smoked the drag and when we started to recover some line the hook came free. We had another two bites on the subsequent drift but the guys wanted to change it up so we targeted sharks. We were making a ton of them but couldn't but a bite. Urgh!!!! Capt. Jinpeng and 11 year old Tiger are from China and wanted to catch some fish. The fishing was slow this morning but Tiger caught a big jack, lost a really nice fish that smoked the drag and hooked a tarpon. Jinpeng lost a couple of nice fish also but was outfished by his boy.

Bau and his dad Henry are locals and sold their boat 20 years ago but they wanted to try some bonefishing. We had a challenge today in that the bait shop did not have shrimp so we hit the flats using artificial shrimp. We had tough conditions with high water, poor visibility and breezy so we hit a spot which typically produces and I can get away with some cover and really shallow water in order to negate some of the conditions. We saw 3 schools of bonefish and had 1 eat but did not get hooked. We ended the day catching some really nice snapper and Henry really enjoyed that! Capt. I had a fun full load today with Carlos, Eric and Juan. Carlos and Eric fish with me every year and this time Carlos brought his son Juan along. This was one of those days where we had really constant action once we hit the flats. Our first stop was off at a little shipwreck to catch some snapper and some shark bait and once we had our bait we hit the flats. While on the flats we ended up hooking a total of 9 sharks, landing 3, 1 for each guy, and landed a couple of barracudas and lost a few more. We finished the day with great conditions in slick calm water and low tide for bonefish but that proved to be rather slow. Capt. NY transplants Henry and Joe were fun guys to fish with today as we hit the flats and got away from the Sunday boating crowd. Our 1st spot stop was one of my favorite flats on an incoming tide and that was the spot to be at. We had plenty of action catching sharks and barracudas including a solid 25 pounder for Joe.

August 2, 2018 Report (Snook video)

I fished the Sheridan House Ministries annual tournament today with Andy and Scott out of Key Largo. This is always a fun tournaments for a great cause and I always have great people on board and today was no exception. We ran directly to a snook spot that although started off slow yielded a 31 inch snook some jacks some sharks and we lost a few really nice fish. We wrapped up the morning fishing for sea trout where we got some and also landed a couple of nice black tips. Capt. Matt and his wife got on board and we were off! After loading up on bait we hit one spot and that's all we needed as the rods stayed bent and the drags screaming with Matt and his wife constantly hooked up to nice big jacks. In order to torment Matt who really wanted a tarpon, turns out his wife is the one that hooked a nice fish and got some jumps out of it before it spit a hook. We had a blast and I bet her arms were sore after this early morning workout.

July 30, 2018 Report (Video)

I had a scheduled day off today but when I got the call the fish with Matt in his wife Carla I had a hard time passing it up. So off we went today for a quick half day trip. After loading up bait, the high winds had blown out the snook and tarpon spots which is very unusual for this time of year. We decided to do some trout fishing were Carla caught the 1st one on the 1st cast but after that it was a dead zone. I decided to hit a jack and tarpon spot and boy did that payoff. However, some weird things happened today! Carla had the hot hand as to begin with and put the number big jack's wearing her out and having to hand the right off the mad a few times. Soon after met God a hot hand as well and kept the rods bent with drag screaming jacks. Seeing some tarpon rolling around we drifted off a bait back and Carla hooked the tarpon, got a nice jump out of it but it came off. Then Matt hooks another fish which turns out it was about a 3 and a 1/2 foot barracuda that jumped in the air like a tarpon. This is where it gets weird. Then out of nowhere as he's fighting the fish something significant hits me in the leg and it turns out the barracuda jumped out of the water, hit my leg and landed in the water on the opposite side of the boat! Whew, with those sharp teeth that was a close call! We landed the big barracuda but when I tried to use the landing tool it shook its head and cut the leader. A few minutes later some unidentified flying organism hit my shoulder out of nowhere. What's going on today? We continued incredibly hot fishing until all the bait ran out and we called it A-day a few minutes early. I'd love ending the month this way! Capt. This was day 2 with John, Brian and Mickey but today we're going to focus on snook and tarpon so we did just that. The 1st spot we got to for snook we hooked two but they both came off. Our 2nd spot we had a tarpon bite but missed the hook set. As we continued to tarpon fish the weather around us got increasingly worse and we had to high tail it and call it A-day. On the run in with we had about 30 mile an hour winds, severe rain and reports of waterspouts just South of us. Too bad we got washed out because I was looking forward to getting these guys some nice fish today. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

Today was day 1 of 2 with John, his son Brian, and Brian's friend Mickey. We were scheduled to fish 6 hours so we were on a mission to get the boys of variety of fish. After loading up on bait we went straight to a tarpon snook spot but it was tough fishing so we hit some shallow wrecks where they caught some fish including some for bait. With some shark bait in the boat we hit the flats were the boys each caught nice lemon sharks and all 3 caught barracudas. We wrapped at the day with some jacks and had a great trip. Capt. July 27, 2018 Report

Well it didn't take long, A-day off for my birthday and I was back to work today. I always enjoy fishing with people from other countries and today I had Erling and his son Glen from Norway. We started off late, almost noon, so I had to make some special arrangements to pick up bait but once the live well was full we want on our way. It only took one spot where the guys caught fish on almost every cast and 2 hours in decided they had enough of a great time so we called it A-day with 2 hours left. These guys were great and a lot of fun and I was really happy to introduce them to fishing in Miami.

Well guys today's the day before my birthday and I'm taking tomorrow off but today I had the pleasure of fishing with Kevin and his son Dylan. This was a great trip because right after getting our bait we went straight to fishing and absolutely wore out the fish, our drags, and Dylan. What are great way to kick off my birthday day off.

July 23, 2018 Report

Local regular client Alec was a board today and we were after snook. I always have a great time with Alec and we have great conversations so we started off getting some bait and targeting snook. They were largely MIA and although I marked a few schools none of the baits would be harassed. So we switched to tarpon fishing but they had lockjaw so we caught a bunch of jacks and barracuda and made a day out of it.
