New Year in High Gear January 1-17, 2025

Happy New Year everyone!  2025 has started off red hot and it's been a ton of fun.  This is the time of year when I fish the natural channels that cut between the flats known locally as the "finger channels" but iI haven't done that much this month as clients have been booking me mostly for bonefish and other hard to catch species.  The bonefishing has been red hot with some trips yielding half a dozen bonefish on a half day trip.  For those that don't know, catching one bonefish in Biscayne Bay is quite an accomplishment but that has been the bare minimum for us, it's been outstanding!  Resident tarpon have also been around for the first hour or two of the early morning with the se tarpon being in the 20-80lb range feeding mainly on live shrimp or soft plastics.  The "potluck" fishing in the aforementioned finger channels has been good but I haven't done it as much lately.  This type of fishing will yield snappers, porgies, a variety of jacks plus some pompano and mackerel.  We've had consistent cold fronts but the water temps have been a perfect mid to low 70's and I expect more of the same for the balance of the month.  Stay tuned for the second half of my January report, it should be good!
