April 17, 2019 Report

I was looking forward to excellent fly fishermen George and his son Christian from the UK. The morning started tarpon fishing and missing a tarpon and three hammerhead sharks that would hit out live baits as the guys were fly fishing. Early on we hooked 140lb tarpon but came off. URGH! I hit another tarpon spout and George was on immediately but the tarpon ran through bridge pillings and inspite some heroics, he broke us off. Then, a few casts later Christian hooks up and lands a massive 40lb jack right after landing a 30lb jack! The bonefish were calling so we hit the flats and had a shot at a big permit and some bones.

Brad and his son Andy jumped aboard for tarpon and we tarpon fished. Oh did we, going 0-4 and seeing hundreds of them but they would hit our baits and not stay on. At the end of the trip we changed it up and Brad got a nice 30lb jack.

How do you fly fish four guys in a flats boat? You take turns. I met Cale and James on their sportfishing boat in Biscayne Bay and with flyrod in hand headed out. Targeting bonefish we had a good number of shots but things just didn't seem to work out. After 4 hours, I dropped them off and picked up the other two guys, Andy and Ryan. After running to a few spots, Andy had a great shot at a monster permit but the fish saw the boat when it turned to take the fly. WHY????????? Capt. Sometimes guides are put in odd predicaments whether it be weather, boat traffic or otherwise. And, today was one of those days. Jose and his friend wanted to bonefish on fly but the wind was howling and it would be tough to fly fish the open flats so we hit a few tarpon spots but unfortunately it was Sunday around Key Biscayne and boaters will be boaters. Our first spot had some tarpon but refused a fly. Second spot had tarpon but jet skis and boats kept running over the fish coming 60' from our boat although they had a half mile of open water around us. Urgh. We finished the day fishing the bridges where we had a tarpon smash a live bait but miss it. I wanna go home! Capt. I always love fishing with Mark and Dom from Canada and today they brought their friend along as well. Mark really wanted tarpon but I warned them the tarpon fishing had been slow and that proved to be true today as well. Changing it up we hit the wrecks and flats and had a ton of sharks behind the boat refusing to eat but after countless shots at barracudas we finally got one.

Well, this was a rough one! Thankfully this was a two boat trip that was part fishing charter and part tour. We had a group that were down on business and wanted to see Biscayne Bay. Our first stop for sharks was desolate so we went ahead with the tour. However, complicating the issue were 30 MPH winds that made it a challenge to keep everyone dry but these folks were great sports and had fun. We decided to give tarpon fishing a try but 15 minutes later they had to go in. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFIshing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

I had Brendan and his friend with the goal of fly fishing for bonefish. The conditions were perfect and had tons of shots at schools of bonefish but always seemed to come up short. Hitting a wreck to catch shark bait, the guys caught fish on fly and bait. Once on the flats the sharks just would not eat inspite of our best efforts. Crazy as it sounds, it does happen!
