Cool mom! August 9, 2023

Chelsea booked a trip for her boys, 15 and 14 year old hardcore fishermen sons.  This was a cool trip where we caught a bunch of different species and kept mixing it up.  Towards the end of the trip we decided to shark fish with some of the fish we caught and set up on one of my favorite flats on this tide for sharks.  Well, we set the baits out and the chum slick and waited.  Not long after, I see some shadows and tails working towards us in the increasingly shallow water.  Just as I had mentioned a few minutes before to the boys, these were bonefish coming towards us, a gift from God!  Well, I put on a shrimp and cast in front of the school and handed the rod to James.  A hard tap later, the rod bent, the reel started to sign and he was on!  James got to land his first bonefish, we hooked some sharks and tons of smaller fun fish.  What a morning!

"I want bonefish" August 8, 2023

That's what Bruce had told me when he jumped aboard with his son.  I made sure we start early for two reasons, 1: the best bite has been on the outgoing tide and 2: we need to beat the heat and avoid the 91 degree water temps we have been seeing by late morning.  With that in mind we idled out of the marina for our half day trip and worked it.  The first spot was slow so we moved off to another flat and the bites were coming but not the hooking.  We broke the ice with Bruce hooking the first bonefish he got to eat and the pressure was half way off.  But, we missed a few bites until his son was able to keep a hook in a bone and got his first one to the boat before we called it a day.

Boys day out August 5, 2023

Dad/sons day out on the boat today with Steven and his two boys Jack and Travis.  They wanted to bonefish and catch sharks so we started off our full day bonefishing.  The conditions were great but the full moon meant a decent number of fish were offshore spawning but there were some still around.  We missed tow bites early on  and then made a move.  At the 4th spot we finally hooked up and Jack got his first bonefish.  By this time it was about 9 am and there were boats everywhere including running right behind our boat and spooking everything around so we gave up on bonefishing and went to catch shark bait.  Here the boys had a great time pulling on small snappers and grunts.  We kept the grunts and hit the flats, my favorite flat on the incoming tide and it proved dead.  OK, we fished my second favorite flat on the incoming and that did it.  Here we saw a massive hammer head shark in about 2 1/1' of water right by the boat, it was awesome!  Oh, and we hooked several sharks and landed one before we called it a day.

Weeks Report July 28-4, 2023

The end of July and the first few days of August were all about beating the heat and bending rods.  Bonefishing was been fair with lots of early morning activity but the fish have been really spooky and the same for lots of the permit that have been around.  For many clients, the ask has been to catch fish as well as sharks on the flats.  Again, early morning has been beast to beat the heat and fish the 88 degree water and not the 91 degree water later on in the day.  Fishing around the full moon was tough but we caught fish and the fishing will get better as the full moon phases passes.  Here are a few pics for the week.

Screw the heat! July 22, 2023

"Alex, 11 o'clock 30 feet, cast 10 feet in front of the wake!  Tyler you cast 2 o'clock 35 feet, 10 feet in front of the wake!"  That's how today started with zero wind, calm conditions and bonefish all around.  Early on Tyler hooked and lost a freight train of a bonefish and then lost another one while Alex missed the bite on a third one, all within 45 minutes of our trip.  What a way to start!  Once the fast and furious action subsided an hour later, we poled off 100 yards and schools were coming straight at us down a shore line.  School after school and shot after shot started to add up until the tide slackened and so did the fishing.  So far we were licking our wounds having lost two fish, missed another bite and no matter how good the cast these guys were making, the schools of bonefish would swim over our live shrimp and not eat it, probably not seeing it.  Man that was tough.  But, oh but, when that tide turned I had grown concerned because most of the best fishing has been on the outgoing tide.  Oh, but I said "but".  Once the tide turned and started coming back in it was on and the guys got three bonefish each for a total at the end of the trip of 9 bonefish hooked and six landed.  Yes, that is what summer is all about!!!  Well, I'm taking a few days off for my birthday but I'll be back at the end of next week and ready to get back to work.

Working through the heat July 16, 2023

Man it's been hot but that comes as no surprise to anyone reading this report.  Today I had Jonathan and Mary Ann aboard for a 6 hour Sunday trip.  Right off the bat at 7am the water temps were 88 degrees and the bonefishing was slow.  I moved them to other flats to shark fish and boy was it slow with Jonathan hooking a nice lemon shark but the hook coming free about 10 minutes into the fight.  At this point the water temps had reached 90 degrees and I wasn't seeing much activity so we moved on to wrap up the trip bonefishing.  It turned out this was the right call and it paid off with Jonathan landed his first bonefish.  Whew, that was close!

Key Largo BBI Event July 13, 2023

Well, the fun BBI tournament in Key Largo was back on today after Covid shut it down for 3 years.  This is a fund raising tournament for a ministry that helps single moms coming out of abusive relationships and they are assisted with job training, clothing, work, shelter and more.  I had three very cool people on board today in Dawn, Jan and James.  They were so laid back they told me they would like to be back early so we fished for three hours and in the process Dawn landed a really nice snook, James lost a tarpon and landed a jack while Jan sat back and relaxed.  Then, they decided it was time to hit the pool and we were done for the day.  Such cool people and I'm glad it all worked out for us.
