August 22, 2014 Report
Local anglers Jorge and his son Jorge Jr. wanted to catch dinner on a late afternoon trip and so off we headed to an area that has produced for me a number of tasty and large mutton snappers. The plan was to fish this area and then head off to an area full of small coral heads and small reefs where the snapper fishing has been great. At the first spot we had a school of big hard fighting and tasty bar jacks swim through and Jorge hooked up on 8lb test. The bar jack tested the light reel and Jorge's skill but eventually landed in our cooler. We released a number of small mutton snapper and other species but lost a huge fish, probably a big grouper, after an almost 10 minute fight. We never could make it to the shallow reefs due the unusually high wind.

Aaron and Jake from Minnesota were back in town and wanted to go fishing again. Last time we fished was in March and the wind was blowing almost 40 mph out of the west. Thankfully there were places for us to hide from the wind and Jake caught sea trout, his biggest fish to date! I love fishing with kids and these guys are always great to fish with. We went to an area not far from the marina and didn't have to leave. Jake caught a number of snappers and jacks plus a few others that got him in the rocks while Aaron hoked a nice tarpon that broke him off on the jump.

Regular client David was back in town and ready to do some fishing. We decided to fish out of Key Biscayne and look for summer tarpon in an attempt to seek redemption from our last tarpon trip together when David lost a monster to a piling. We set up and worked an area that had been producing for me. There were only a few rollers and it was slower than expected but while catching a variety of other species we waited for "the bite". "The bite" came and it was a monster for summer time. The fish never jumped but ran over 100 yards of line nonstop while I tried to release the anchor, reel in the other rods and give chase. Unfortunately, he broke us off and swam free. There was a very unhappy guide on the boat at this point.

Local angler Juan and his friend were aboard today to check out the flats and take a break from their usual offshore routine. We started with a calm morning and getting shots at bonefish, redfish and permit but the casts were off just a hair, enough to not allow a hook up. We switched to shark fishing and it was a Jaws fest! When the tide turned we were hooked up to big sharks every few minutes! We ended landing two in the 4' 5' and range as the others would break off, cut us off, cut through the wire, you name it, it happened. The day ended with a bang and we had a blast.

Local angler John hadn't fished Biscayne Bay in almost 20 years and he wanted to check it out once again. Today was an agonizingly slow day, not a good example of how the bay typically is. We saw some schools of bonefish but no hook ups and there were none where they typically hang out.

Jack, his son and son in law boarded my skiff today in search of bonefish. The morning was calm and quiet and we had numerous shots at bonefish and a few permit but no hook ups. The day ended on an oceanside flat with good current looking for bonefish but there were so many sharks, including BIG sharks in the 7-8' range, that rendered bonefishing impossible. We landed two sharks but no bones.

Daniel and Taryn from Georgia boarded early morning for a half day on the water. We arrived at our first spot and never had to move. There was some action from smaller snappers but Taryn quickly landed a nice mutton snapper putting the pressure on Daniel. Not long after he hooks an 80lb tarpon but cut us off a few minutes later on a piling. Again the rod goes off and this time we close the deal on a nice resident tarpon about 50lbs. Once gain the rod doubles over and Taryn is on to another in the 50lb range. With the fish next to the boat about to be landed he makes on giant jump 6' in the air and breaks her off. Urgh. What a morning!
