7 Year Old Tarpon Master August 15, 2020 Report (tarpon Video)

George and his boys Evan and Patrick have been fishing with me for years and today they wanted tarpon.  Well, we had great conditions and so tarpon fish we did targeting the smaller summer tarpon that call Miami home.  At our second spot Patrick hooked up and fought his tarpon like a pro.  I have to tell you, I was impressed!  Landing his tarpon we moved on and targeted other species where they caught a bunch of sporty barracuda, yellow jack and a big mutton snapper.  Evan did an awesome job landing his big mutton snapper and Patrick got a nice yellow jack at the end.  They'll be eating a nice fish dinner tonight and sleep soundly with visions of tarpon jumping in their heads.

Working Hard in the 'Glades August 14, 2020 Report

I had the pleasure of fishing with Miami local Yadiel today in the Everglades.  Yadiel doesn't fish but needed to get away from the daily stresses and what better way than in a boat far away from everyone.  I decided to go in the afternoon based on the tides and so we were in the boat fishing by 2pm.  Spot 1 was my favorite spot but produced only two missed bites.  When I looked at the Raymarine, the water temperatures were 92 degrees, ouch!  I ran around a bit trying to find the right combination of current and cooler water and finally found it.  Here is where we caught trout, snook and redfish saving the day at the end of the trip.  Whew, that was a close call!

P.S. I snuck in a few casts at Yadiel's request and made it count.

Tough One August 13, 2020 Report

Hayden is from Arizona and wanted to catch big tarpon but with our big fish gone we decided to go bonefishing instead.  Meeting up in Homestead, we hit the flats with his dad Mike in search of bonefish.  At first we saw a few move through but didn't manage to hook up.  As the morning progressed we had a few more shots and Mike sight cast a shark but the bonefishing was definitely slow.  Today was definitely a disappointment.

After a 2 Hour Wait! August 8, 2020 Report

Well, things have been rather calm at the marinas and so I was confident that would continue today as I got ready to meet Gabe and his 11 year old son Noah at the marina for a half day trip. When I got to the main road of the marina I saw what I didn't expect, a huge line of boats waiting to get in. NO! I waited patiently in line over a half mile long and two hours later the boat was in the water and Gabe and Noah were jumping aboard. Idling out the channel I relaxed and made sure Noah had plenty of action catching snappers, jacks, runners and more. A few of those we used on the flats for sharks and Gabe landed a perfect sized one with 20 minutes left in the trip. I took them to one more spot where Noah hooked a BIG mutton snapper but lost it as he tried to manage the beast on the other end of the line. It was so nice to get out and work under ideal weather conditions and some great people.

After the Weather Cleared July 24, 2020 Report

We've been having high winds and rain for the last 4 days and every day local angler Marc was texting me wanting to go fishing and I kept telling him to wait until the weather cleared. Well, today the weather cleared and we met at the ramp at noon with his son Ben and friend Alex. The winds were still in the 20MPH range but that wasn't a big deal. We ran straight to the flats and shark fished since the boys wanted something big. The lemon sharks were all over the place but acting strange, ignoring baits dropped right in front of them. However, we had a few cooperate and we ended up hooking 5, landing 2 and landing a nice barracuda.

Sharky Kind of Day July 16, 2020 Report

Business is definitely slower than normal due to Covid 19 but local anglers still want to fish and than included Lennis and his cousin. Today was a half day trip to show them what Biscayne Bay is all about and they were thrilled. We started catching dinner keeping a few snappers for dinner but quickly going through several dozen shrimp as they hooked up almost the instant the bait hot the water. With a few blue runners in the live well he went to the flats and hunt for sharks. The first bite came moments after the bait hit the water and Lennis did a great job working his shark to the boat. We lost the next few sharks we hooked but right at the end his cousin hooked up and got his nice lemon shark that gave him all he could handle. Great day with great guys.

90 Minutes of Magic July 9, 2020 Report

Wait, let me catch my breath! The plan was for my daughter and I to go fishing in the Everglades for a few hours but when I tried to wake her up it was a "no". So, I hitched up the skiff and headed out on my own. A couple of minutes into my run to spot 1 I saw some fishing busting on the surface so I took out the fly rod and caught a bunch of fun lady fish for about 15 minutes. Having warmed up I got to my first spot, and that's all I needed. The first 10 casts produced 10 hookups on snook, landing 4 and losing 6 on jumps. The rest of my time was very similar but not quite 10 for 10. For the entire 90 minutes I fished that spot it was fish landed, hooked or lost on almost every cast! I called it quits after catching a nice redfish (I had lost 3 or 4 reds prior) and having released close to or about 2 dozen snook. It was awesome and I had the special treat of watching a saw fish swim right by the boat. Such a great day in Everglades National Park!
