Two great and crazy guys hit the flats February 27, 2022

No two trips a dat today as I had a full day with Chris and Albert from Oregon.  They wanted to try a mix of spin and fly fishing and catch whatever species they could.  I had a blast with these two crazies and man Albert was on fire.  We started early and went straight to bonefishing before the Sunday boat traffic got too crazy and within minutes Albert was on to the first bonefish of the day.  Dang!  It took a bit more time but eventually Chris got his personal best bonefish with a solid 8 pounder.  From there we hit a wreck but nothing would eat our flies, lures or live shrimp.  Ok fine fish you want to be that way?!

On to another spot which is a channel I've mentioned before that has been good.  Here the guys had a blast with fish on almost every cast until we were running low on shrimp and I wanted to save at least 6-8 for bonefish in case we needed them.  These guys went through 8 dozen shrimp in short order.

Moving back to the flats for shark fishing I started pole them around for bonefish catching the end of the tide, my favorite time on this flat.  Just like clock work the bonefish were there and mudding.  Albert was on the bow and didn't see the muds but 5 minutes later another group of bonefish come off the channel mudding on the flats and he makes a perfect cast and drops the fly where I told him.  Strip, strip, "I'm on!".  A long run later the bone broke us off.  The day ended hooking a few sharks before heading back.  What a great day and great guys!

Saturday Double February 26, 2022

Man it's been non stop and here it is Saturday and I have another double.  This is fun, and exhausting!  In the morning I had Emmet from Georgia with flyrod in hand.  It was definitely blowing this morning so the goal was to hit some spots where he can throw the fly with reasonable chance of success yet stay out of the wind as much as possible.  Bonefish spot was was a dud.  Snook spot one was slow but we did get a snook to blow up on a fly but not get hooked.  Snook spot two was a dud and we wrapped it up trying for more bonefish but those were duds as well.  It was definitely tough on the fly today.

Thankfully I had the afternoon trip with good client David and his dad Michael.  We went staring to shark fishing where we chummed some in and Michael got one with help from David.  They wanted a change of pace so I took them to a channel that was been good lately and they killed it tossing jig and shrimp catching yellow jacks, mangrove snappers, school master snappers and more.

A Tale of Two Trips February 25, 2022

It's always interesting to me how each trip differs from the next even on the same day.  My morning trip was fly fishing with Juan and his buddy Juan from Argentina.  We found tarpon and they threw at them for quite some time but never hooked up.  Part of the issue is that the tarpon were moving around a lot so we would get a couple of casts in before they moved and we had to locate them again and reposition.  Usually you want them hanging out the in the same area that hints at them feeling comfortable and relaxed and hence in a better mood to eat.  We them switched to bonefishing where they had a couple of shots and as time ran out we hit some jacks but they were nowhere to be found.

My afternoon trip was a two boat trip and I had Keith and Chad onboard.  Chad wanted to target bonefish and Keith just wanted to catch fish.  Hmm, OK let's try something.  A couple of the bonefish spots already had a boat on them so I took them back to where there were no jacks 45 minutes before with Juan and Juan.  Ha, this time it was fish on every cast including jacks, mangrove snapper, small mutton snappers and a few really nice fish that broke us off.  With boats cleared off the flats I went back and after more time than I would have liked Chad hooked up and got his first bonefish, a nice one that gave him a bunch of awesome runs.  Congrats Chad!

7 Year old girl just outfished you! February 24, 2022

Tom is a trout guide near Boston, MA and came down on a family vacation with wife Tanya and seven year old talkative cutie Makenzie.  I have to tell you, Tom is raising her right because the girl can fish.  She was casting on her own and working the rod on her own and not only did she catch a bunch of fish but she caught a permit on her own.  Wow!  That was the fish of the day for sure.  We moved on and fished another spot where Tom landed a monster mangrove snapper in the 7lb range.  Dang Tom!  That fish came home with me and I just had it for dinner.  Delicious!

This was a great family and they rocked it today.

On the fly today February 23, 2022

Tarpon, that was on my mind today and thankfully David was thinking the same thing.  After the last few days I nailed down the tarpon pattern and we hit it straightaway.  Armed with a 10wt fly rod in hand and a black fly I located the tarpon right away and we went for it.  Setting up on the schools David made some solid casts into the schools and was quickly rewarded with a hook up on a solid 60 lber that gave us a big jump before spitting the fly.  Ok, lick our wounds and get back to work.  A few schools later David hooks a solid fish that didn't jump but made a long run to open water. Ah, open water, time to relax.  Oh wait, the fish is rushing the boat.  David did a great job of keeping the light tight and the tarpon ran straight for a dock and broke us off.  NO!!!!  Well, that was the last hook up and we ended the day taking a few shots at some bonefish.  I want revenge on these tarpon!

High Country Man on the flats February 22, 2022

Gregg and I were scheduled to start at 7a, but at 5:30am when I woke up I had a message from him asking to cancel because of stomach issues.  Well, we cancelled.  Then at 8am he texted me that he was better and could fish so off we went at 9am.  We decided to stay close to the marina in case he didn't feel well and made the best of it.  The best of it was focusing on bonefish and snook.  In the process Gregg caught a few jacks and then hooked a big bonefish.  After a solid run and a deep bend in the rod the fish came off.  What a heart break.  We had tough conditions with lots of windy and dirty water so this would've been a real accomplishment under the circumstances.

Afternoon rod bending trip February 21, 2022

President's Day wasn't as crazy on the water as I had thought so it was nice to get on the water with Mike and Marianne to catch different species and help them relax while on Mike's company trip.  I took them to a spot where there have been lots of jacks, snapper and other surprise species such as bonefish and grouper and they put a hurting on the jacks.  Once that slowed down towards the end of the trip we changed it up.  I wanted to try and get them a bonefish but President's Day reared it's ugly head and all the bonefish spots had boats partying on them.  The last spot we fished had a wake board boat come right up to us as we made our first cast and started wake boarding right next to us.  Dang!  That's Key Biscayne on a busy long weekend for you.  After that it was time to head in.
