July 31, 2016 (Video!)

Thirteen year old twins Jake and Adam wanted sharks and barracuda. They thought it'd be fun they said, let's catch one they said! Well, they did, and the sore arms will come later. Gary and his two boys are from Miami and they fish with me a few times a year so off we went before school starts. The barracuda fishing was slow (weird!) but the shark fishing was not. Right off the bat Adam hooks a black tip that we sight casted and watched eat the live bait right in front of us. Unfortunately the hook pulled. A bit later one of the rods goes off and Adam gets a nice 5 footer to the boat. These boys have an intense rivalry and Jake was feeling the pressure. Now Jake is up to bat and a bit later a big 6 footer charges the bait and is off to the races. Fourty minutes into the fight the hook pulls again on Jake. Oh, oh! Moments later another one swims by, I cast and drop the bait in front of it, he swims up and eats and I set the hook. Jake is on again and after a nice run the hook pulls again! What's up with that? We change flats to catch the last of the tide and a few more big sharks move in but ignore our baits. Right as I'm about to call it a day another big shark comes in and ignores our live bait but eats the dead bait and Jake is on! Twenty minutes later he gets a 6 footer to the boat and the pressure is off Jake. Poor Adam, he thought he had the day won with the biggest shark of the day and in the 4th quarter with 8 seconds left Jake scores on a hail mary and steals the victory. Until next time boys!

July 29, 2016 Report (Video)

Regular client Alec boarded this morning and off we went in our search for snook. In spite of our best efforts no snook came aboard. The next spot was for big jacks and snook but no one was home. Tarpon proved to be better but we missed the first bite as a nice tarpon sky rocketed in the air attempting to eat Alec's bait startling both of us. The fish came back and ate the bait the second time but came off a few moments later. In the process, Alec landed two black tip sharks that were all over our tarpon baits. Running down to the flats, the first flat provided a great shot at a school of waking bonefish in super shallow water but no hook up in spite of Alec's good cast. A couple of flats later we had another shot at a big school of bonefish but the cast was off just a few feet and the school spooked. The last spot flat of the day provided another shot at two BIG bonefish in the 10-12lb range but we couldn't get a good angle on them. In desperation I told Alec to cast and he did but the fish bones were at a bad angle and spooked. The day ended with Alec hooking a few barraudas and landing one and hooking a nice bull shark on the flats.

July 28, 2016 Report

Nick from the U.K. had never fished saltwater before and was looking to land his first bonefish. The first spot of the morning provided a few schools of bones but they stayed just out of casting range. The next flat provided two big schools of bonefish in the 8lb range but we couldn't connect because Nick's prescription sunglasses weren't polarized and it was hard for him to spot the fish. At the last flat we had another couple of shots at big bones and a school of mudding bonefish. Nick was great to fish with and he'll be back, with polarized sunglasses.

July 23, 2016 Report

Today was a tough morning. Mike and Jeff from Naples boarded in order to target bonefish and permit. Conditions could not have been better so I had high hopes for today. The first three spots yielded one school of waking bonefish in the distance and not much else. Spot four provided two shots at permit but no takers. Spot five proved to be the last spot of the day where we saw two bones but too close to the boat. There was hardly any life on the flats today so we called it a day at four hours. Capt. July 21, 2016 Report

Tony and Rob are childhood friends and jumped aboard to get some fishing in. The morning started slow but piked up in the afternoon where our baits were being destroyed the moment they hit the water. Running out of baits they kept the action going on lures. These were great guys and a blast to fish with.

July 18, 2016 Report

This afternoon Brian and his friend boarded for an afternoon of fishing. The goal was shark fishing and so we hit a spot to catch bait. With bait aught we headed to our first flat that proved unproductive. The second flat was the same with us missing two bites from sharks that were very spooky. The last spot was close to the marina and it was vacant of sharks. Tough day. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing

July 14, 2016 Report (Snook!)

Jim and Nancy dropped off their boys Cole and Calan this morning and the boys and I were off. The wind was sportier than is typical in July but that makes the heat much more comfortable so off we went to our first spot of the day. After getting set up it didn't take long for one of the rods to doubles over and Calan is on to a nice snook. After a few quick pics and a release the second rod doubles over and Cole is on his snook. Again, a few pics and a healthy release and mr snook is on his way home. About 10 minutes later another rod goes off and Calan loses his snook to a shark. A few minutes later the same happens to Cole, his snook got sharked. These were big bull sharks in the 6' range eating our snook 20' from the boat. We missed a few more snook bites and Calan landed a BIG mangrove snapper before we changed spots. I took them to a tarpon spot that held small to medium tarpon and after we set up and the tarpon start to roll around us a group of summer campers invaded the area and stayed within 50' of the boat screaming and jumping off their paddle boards. URGH! Needless to say, we moved! The next two spots were dead but the last spots produced nice jacks, snappers and we missed another snook bite. Not a bad day on the bay today!
