Weekly Report August 1-17,2024

These two weeks have been hot but they have been fun!  Fishing with a number of clients I've had the opportunity to fish for different species from bonefish to snappers.  My week started with local regular clients Josh and Janelle fishing out of Key Biscayne with the idea to catch dinner.  We had a fun trip catching yellow jacks and some legal size snappers plus a bunch more species including hooking a huge 25lb barracuda that eventually broke us off.  

The end of the week was with Jose and his two boys as we targeted sharks on the flats.  The fishing today was pretty slow but we ended up hooking one and seeing a few more but they were rather reluctant to eat, go figure!

The next week I fished with local client and friend Alec.  Alec is chasing a rather difficult prize through a program started by the state of Florida, catching 70 different species.  For the inshore portion of the list we only have a few species left that reside in Biscayne Bay so off we went.  We went on a disappointing trip as the fishing was very slow but we did land a nice porgy that was on the list.  

A few days later I fished with 14 year old Nico and his grandfather Robert in order to keep the rods bent for Nico.  Well, Nico had a huge day catching not only 8 different species but his first permit and first snook.  Oh, and he also caught a ton of horse eye jacks, one of the species I was looking for with Alec.  How crazy is that! 

The first half of the month ended with Scott, George and Garrett.  This was one of those days that started on fire!  Using top water lures George and Garrett had small tarpon and snook blow up on their plugs, some would get hooked and all came off.  How frustrating is that!  As a consolation prize was George's first bonefish at around 9 lbs and Garrett got a massive barracuda on the flats.  Wow!  

It's been a fun few weeks and I'm looking forward to closing out the month strong so stay tuned!

End of month report July 15-30, 2024

The second half of July got HOT and the fishing was still good with most trips being fun "catch whatever is fun" trips.  These are great trips because we can focus on the best fishing, not necessarily a specific species.  My trips were with Scott, then Ray and his friend Evan, Tom, Danny and his kids and I wrapped up the month with local regular clients Armon and Josh.  On my trip with Ray, he got his first Miami bonefish but it was tough fishing.  The rest of the trips were great in that we targeted different species.  Tom and his wife caught a bunch of species to eat including yellow jacks, mangrove snappers and school master snappers.  With Danny we caught some blue runners and used them for shark bait where they hooked a bunch of lemon sharks on the flats before we turned our attention to dinner and they took home over a half dozen yellow jacks.  The last trip of the month was with Armon and Josh and as always we target dinner and the yellow jacks did not disappoint.  But, we caught a bunch of other species including targeting, hooking then using a big 30 lb barracuda.  That was fun!

Week Report July 1-14, 2024

The first week of July was off to a hot start. The first week I was fishing with repeat client Ron and we fished in Biscayne Bay and Everglades National Park.  Ron had never fished the Everglades before and after we did so on day two, he wanted to come back every day after that.  Admittedly, the fishing was not on fire but we caught fish and Ron had a blast catching lemon sharks on the flats, averaging 12 hook ups per trip!  Over the week, the species were varied with Ron catching bonefish, snook, redfish, sharks and jacks.  What a cool week with Ron! 

The following trip was with Brittany, her husband Fransisco and their little girl.  We decided to shark fish the Biscayne Bay flats and had a great time fighting lemon sharks in 2 feet of water.  

My last trip of the first half of the month was with regular client Chris and his wife Ashley.  They are such cool people and we had tons of shots at tailing bonefish on fly in super calm, super shallow conditions at day break.  As the tide dropped we had to move off before we got stuck and fished another area where Chris got his bonefish of the trip.  We have fished a few times already and he told me this was his 10th bonefish caught with me.  Wow!  Congrats Chris!

The end of June 17-30, 2024

 The second half of June had some tough conditions that kept me at home and rescheduling trips thanks to 7 days of constant rain we had move across the area.  But, I was able to sneak in a few trips and the first one was with Bob armed with a fly rod.  I took Bob to an area out of the wind and we were able to find some schools of bonefish moving through but they stayed just out of casting range.  Towards the end of the trip we finally got a bonefish to eat his fly but a split second worth of hesitation was enough to allow the bone to spit the fly.  Ouch!  the next trip was with Drew and we had perfect summer conditions, finally!  We found tons of bones and permit in super calm water and Drew had tons of shots.  The first bonefish he landed this morning was a 12 pounder, wow!  The second bone was about 8 and then there were 3 more for a total of 6 bonefish hooked and five landed.  What a day!  I ended the month fishing with Brooke and her son just fishing finger channels and they had a blast catching all sorts of snappers and jacks on our half day trip.

Wet Report June 9-16, 2024

This is a short report due to the weather we've been having.  I was scheduled to fish with Ron Monday through Friday but we rescheduled due to constant and severe rain the whole week and my Saturday trip was rescheduled as well du to rain.  But, Father's Day was better and I was able to get Jake and Tom out for a 6 hour trip.  The weather was threatening in the morning but it never did rain and it actually got nicer as the day progressed.  Well, they wanted to target bonefish and we fished a few spots away from the breeze and we found a few schools but no luck.  As the tide dropped we wear able to change tactics and we finally scored.  Tom was on fire and he was able to land four bonefish while Jake decided to wait until the last minute and land the biggest fish of the day with a bonefish in the solid 8lb class.  Way to go guys!  Happy Father's Day to everyone!

Sizzling Start June 1-8, 2024

Dang, if there was a way to start off the month of June this would be it.  It's been hot but that has been a side note in light of the awesome fishing we had so far this week.  I began the week with Amy, her son Henry and this friend Daniel out of Key Biscayne.  They were great to fish with and armed with shrimp on jigs, they started off hot with Daniel landing a massive jack that took 20 minutes to land.  The balance of the trip consisted of them catching snappers and smaller jacks.  

The following trip was with local angler Dan who wanted to catch his first big bonefish.  We got an early start and right away there were tailing bonefish all around us.  Ha, it turns out the first school of trailers coming at us, Dan made a perfect cast and Hooke dup.  Wow!  After a long run and a n awesome fight he landed his first big bonefish, on the first cast of the trip!!!!  We landed another bonefish shortly afterwards and had plenty more shots.  When the dust settled we had accomplished our mission and at the right time as the fishing died off after that.  It's about timing I guess.  

On to the following day with regular clients Arman, Josh and Benji.  What a trip!  We hit one spot and lever moved as it was solid fishing from the onset.  Although we landed a number of species including keeper mangrove snappers and nice jacks we lost way too many nice fish.  Josh had the hot hand and the curse as he must have lost 5-6 really nice fish that would burn up the drag and once they settled down the hook would pull or they would break us of on structure.  Ouch that hurt.  One fish we did see was a 40 lb jack that ate his bait next to the boat and then took off like a freight train.  We chased it but a few minutes into the fight the hook pulled.  That sucked! 

The last trip of the week was with Josh, John and Andrew for a full day of bone fishing.  Just like my trip with Dan, it was on fire early morning and then dead once the day progressed.  But, when it was hot it was hot!  The guys ended the morning flurry landing 5 bonefish, the first for John and Andrew.  But, it gets better.  John landed his first bonefish, a 12 pounder and a 6 pounder.  Wow, that's the way to do it.  Andrew got his first bonefish too, one being 10 lbs and the other at about 8lbs.  Man, these guys crushed it!  All these fish we caught sight fishing as they were tailing in super calm shallow water.  What a morning and what a week!

What a way to end the month! May 24-31, 2024

What a way to end the month but it was not all good news at first.  My Saturday charter was with regular local client Barry and we were fishing out of Key Biscayne on Memorial Day weekend.  Not good.  But, he was there for a few nights and couldn't drive south so the plan was to meet him there and well that's when things went sideways.  With HUGE amounts of boat traffic at the marina, I arrived at 6:45AM only to find out the marina was already full and closed.  What?!  I had to tell Barry to reschedule and I drove an hour and a half back home.  Ouch!  My Sunday trip was also with a regular long time client, Alex and out of the same marina in Key Biscayne.  This time we started at 6:30AM and I launched out of Homestead at 5:30AM and ran by boat an hour north to Key Biscayne.  Everything went well after that but the marinas were already 3/4 full by 5:30Am.  Crazy!  Oh, back to fishing.  It was slow overall but Alex hooked and lost a tarpon and his buddy Kai caught a bunch of snappers and jacks.  I took Monday off and declined a few trips, my mental health s more important.  However, I had long time client Ken on board out of Homestead with his kids Gianna and Haram.  He wanted to make sure they caught a bunch of fish regardless of size so the kids caught endless snappers until they got bored.  At this point we target bonefish and were able to hook two and land one, nice!  My last trip of the month was Chris and his son Luke targeting bonefish.  It was on fire!  We had slick calm conditions, falling tide and great moon phase.  The end result was tons of shots at schools of bonefish coming in all directions.  We hooked four and landed two.  Not great odds but it was one of those mornings where landing bonefish was almost guaranteed.  That's what early morning bone fishing is like in the summer and it didn't disappoint.
