The slick has started! May 1-15, 2026

It's May, it's hot and it's slick!  I mean it is slick clam, no wind in the mornings and tails everywhere.  May is the month when we start our summer pattern of windless mornings, warming water and lots of bonefish, permit and tarpon early morning.  This has been the case the first couple of weeks this month, as it should be.  Here's the run down.

There have been plenty of juvenile tarpon working the shorelines that will take popper flies or top water lures.  These juvenile tarpon have taken the place of the big migratory tarpon around Key Biscayne that sued to be the main stay of our tarpon season.

Bonefishing has been excellent, especially early mornings as we take advantage of the calm mornings making it easier to spot their tails and dorsal fins as they move along the shallow flats.

Permit are a steady target for those wanting the ultimate challenge.  Permit have been on both sides of the bay, the mainland shoreline and the ocean side flats.

I haven't been snook fishing since the three mentioned above have taken up most of my time but early mornings are the best times to target them along creeks and shorelines.

We have been catching pompano pretty regularly mixed in with small permit, jacks, snappers and lady fish.  The lady fish have been a blast on a fly rod as they crush flies and make their big jumps.

The fishing for barracuda has been good with plenty of big ones in the 20 pound range being caught on live jacks and we have been seeing plenty of sharks but especially hammerhead and bull sharks in the channels and black tips, lemon and nurse sharks on the flats.

That's he run down of the last two weeks.  Stay tuned for another report at the end of the month.

Finishing Strong February 28, 2022

February has been a crazy month with few days off right before Valentine's Day.  I wrapped up my month fishing with Ward out of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo.  I picked him up and he wanted to try fly fishing for bonefish and tarpon plus catch something to eat.  Tarpon was the first on the list in south Biscayne Bay but the areas I checked had non in them.  Off to bonefishing.  Spot one was beautiful with good current and in the lee of the wind but it was dead.  Hmm, ok spot two was in the wind but I put Ward at a good angle so he can throw his flyrod with the least amount of wind resistance and it work as he laid out some really nice casts.  Using a mix of spin and fly, I was able to get him his first bonefish using the trusty spin rod and shrimp combo.  We continued to try for bones on fly without success so we went meat fishing for dinner but everything we caught was too small to keep.  I think he'll forgive me not catching him dinner after getting him his first bonefish.  Great job Ward!

This didn't start well... November 7, 2021

Remember my last report about my back?  Turns out I went to the gym after my last trip and while doing weights I pulled my lower back, incline bench press at that!  Now I'm in pain, can hardly walk and I had today's trip on the books.  Todays trips was with Kevin and last time we fished it was this May and he got his first bonefish and his son Noah got a massive barracuda.  Today was different as he was with his friend Ryan and Ryan had never caught bonefish.  Oh, and my back is out, it's 59 degrees and the wind is howling at 20-25 MPH.  I almost had to cancel the trip and Kevin was game so we went for it.  It wasn't easy with few places to hide from the wind and my back killing me with the slightest movement but I worked through it.  Having to fish a bit deeper water as the flats we inaccessible the guys caught snappers but no bonefish.  I made a move and there they were as we went 3-4 on bonefish with Ryan and Kevin both got 9 pounders.  Way to go guys and now it's time for me to heal up.

Three Days with Mike March 26, 2021

Mike is from Maryland and fly fishes with me for three days several times a year.  We always have a good time and mix it up on fly.  The first day we had very unusual conditions for March, a super calm windless morning.  We took the opportunity and fished for bonefish out of Homestead and it was awesome!  The problem is we missed a few eats on fly but we changed it up and ended the day fishing a mullet mud where Mike had a blast catching bluefish, jacks, and more as well as having a black tip shark eat his bluefish next to the boat.  The second day was like the first except the bonefishing was even better and Mike got 8 eats and finally connected on the last one.  What a rush!  Afterwards we fished the mullet muds again and called it a day.  On the last day the wind had picked up so we fished out of Key Biscayne and the fishing was good but the fish were reluctant to eat a fly.  I really wanted Mike to get a snook on fly but the conditions were tough and the wind was coming at a bad angle.  He did ask that I throw a lure to make sure they were there and I hooke duop immediately.  Sorry Mike!  We called it a day early because of the unusually high boat traffic running over most of the fishing spots.

Incredible two trips today January 30, 2021

Two trips today with completely different goals which illustrates the need to stay flexible and ready as a guide in Miami.  My morning trip was with Eric and his father in law Jim and Eric wanted to try bonefishing.  Jim on the other hand wanted to relax and hang out plus of course catch a fish.  With the wind building as the minutes went by I took them to a spot where the tide was perfect and got to work.  Ha, it didn't take long as Eric hooks up and the fish is running so hard and fast into the wind I had to crank up the motor and follow it.  When the fight was over a 12lb bonefish was in the landing net recovering before we took pictures of this beautiful fish.  Wow, what a start!   After release Eric tells Jim "your turn next." and it wasn't long until indeed Jim was on to another solid fish!  This time I didn't have to give chase but it smoked the drag and then a 10lb bonefish was safely in the landing net.  Geeze!  We wrapped it up and fished other spots to get away from the increasing wind.

My afternoon trip was with regular client David and Nicole from N.Y.  I had plans for snook and general crazy fish catching action but David wanted sharks.  No problem, we caught bait and hit the flats.  We saw one shark, a massive lemon that came by the boat, turned on the scent and ate one of the baits and the craziness was on!  A long tough fight later the 200lb lemon was next to the boat and released.  We hooked another big lemon but it broke off and finished the day hooking a massive nurse shark that spit the hook.

It was an honor today January 5, 2020

There are times when you meet someone that is a little different than most and that can be good or bad, HAHA.  But, today I met Jan and spent 6 hours fishing with him and can tell you it was an honor fishing with him.  See, Jan is a retired breast cancer surgeon who I suspect has saved the lives of many women through his gift and passion for his craft.  Also, he is an IGFA representative who has travelled the world fishing and promoting conservation for the betterment of fish stocks and the local populace.  And there is more as he is the holder of 90 current IGFA world records!  Of course he is as humble as they come and I didn't know about this until more than half way through our trip.  But he had one goal and that was to bonefish but it wouldn't be easy since we had a strong cold front pass through the night before dropping the air temperatures.  Well, long story short, Jan caught a nice fat bonefish in the 9 lb range and had shots at many more on spin and fly as we did our best to hide from the wind and look for the warmest water possible.  And there is one more thing to this trip but I won't ruin the surprise until we get confirmation in about 3 months.  Be sure to stick around.....

Jake Vs. Bonefish January 2, 2021

OK, I caught myself still using 2020 but hey we're only two days in.  After a day off for New Years day I was back to work with Doug and his son Jake.  Once again, the wind would make fly fishing for bones impossible so we used spinning gear and made a long run down to to some protected flats.  The bones were there for sure as we kept seeing them coming in.  Finally we got one to eat only for the hook to come out.  Geeze!  About an hour later we got another eat and this time Jake was on and the bone made a blistering run.  Several minutes later I had a fat bonefish in the landing net.  Yes!  Congrats Jake!  Moving on we fished a few finger channels that proved slow so we called it a day early.

Two for Tuesday December 29, 2020

Two trips this morning and the wind was getting worst.  Well, gotta work and gotta be up for the challenge.  So, my morning trip was with regular client Gonzalve and his now 7 year old awesome Sebastian.  I love Sebastian, he is a great little fisherman and is as tough as nails.  He proved that by working the lure, hooking, fighting and landing his first snook.  Wow!  After we caught a few snook, some jacks and other stuff it was time to move on and catch dinner.  In the finger channels they tore it up again with non stop action on a bunch of species, taking home a half dozen fish for dinner.  Our last stop Gonzalve caught another snook and they finished off on a high note.

After dropping them off I picked up Mike and Emiel and headed off to the finger channels again and that is the only spot we fished as they were on constant action to the point they had to take a break due to sore arms.  I love that!

These Women Rock! December 27, 2020

I had the pleasure of fishing with locals Elisa and Maria.  As has been the case lately, the morning started cold but warmed up a bit throughout the day but.  Maria definitely had the hot hand today catching everything that swam near the boat including big snook and more.  After the snook, we fished the finger channels and that is where Elisa started to shine as the girls kept the rods bent on about 8 different species that made the drags sing.  They caught big porgies, yellow jacks, mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, big blue runners, jack crevales and a few others I can't recall right now, I'm getting old.  Way to go ladies!

12 Year old vs Snook December 23, 2020

I had Steve and Drew on board for the second year and Steve just wanted Drew to catch fish.  So, we hit a spot that had been producing snook and well, Drew got his snook that gave him a great fight.  The best part is that Drew worked the lure, hooked and landed the fish on his own.  Very cool!  We wrapped up the trip catching dinner and losing two monster fish that may have been groupers or giant snapper.  Ouch!  Congrats Drew!

It's Raining Silver December 19, 2020

Kurt has fished all over the world for bonefish but Biscayne Bay hasn't been one of those places.  So, with that in mind we headed off to bonefish.  At the first spot we saw a few schools but we didn't connect.  The second spot would be a different story as Kurt wound up releasing a nice 8 pound bonefish, his biggest to date.  He had hooked up a few minutes before and with the bonefish starting to roll in I was cool with sticking around but he wanted to try something different.  Something different was a shallow ship wreck that were loaded with yellow jacks, big blue runners, mutton snappers and more all caught on lures.  Nice work Kurt!

Keeping them bent November 23, 2020

Jim and Annie flew in from Texas and Jim, being an avid fisherman, really wanted to try fishing in Miami.  We had a gorgeous day and with the live well loaded up we got on fish right away.  Using live pilchards the jacks and mangrove snappers kept Jim busy.  Then came the bull sharks and tossing out a bait in front of one of them guaranteed a hook up but then a spit hook, he never had the hook in him.  Then came another bite and Jim was on for about 15 minutes until the hook straightened.  Hmmm, that's odd.  We changed spots and hit a finger channel where we wrapped up the 4 hour trip catching more jacks and snappers including a nice mutton and some horse eye jacks.

Family Time November 14, 2020

George from the U.K. was back but this time he was with daughter and wife.  He booked a full day and wanted to keep the girls busy with different species and a boat tour as well so we did just that.  We caught bait and then we were off.  We hit a few spots and caught fish including some nice mutton snappers, mangrove snappers and more while showing the ladies around the bay and all the interesting and historical areas.  This was a very cool trip and it was great seeing George again and his family.

Fall's Mixed Bag November 13, 2020

Regular client Kevin from Utah brought his daughter and son in law and the goal was to keep them busy catching fish regardless of species.  Perfect, that's the perfect plan for fall.  So, I located some bait, threw the net a few times and loaded up the live well.  With enough bait on hand we fished a few different spots where they caught mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, yellow jacks, big blue runners, trigger fish and we lost a few really nice fish we couldn't keep out of the structure.  Then we hit the flats and got them some sharks.  It was a very cool trip with great people and the list of species caught was long.

This was a brutal yet satisfying day November 4, 2020

Kent, his dad Jeff and brother Nick flew in from TX just to fish with for Kent's annual trip with me.  Well, with the wind blowing 30-35 MPH it would be a tough day but off we went.  The guys caught snappers, sharks and jacks and when the tide was right I took them to a flat that works for me and fished for bonefish.  We ended up hooking four and landing one bonefish, quite a feat in this relentless wind.  Whew, time for a nap!

Late Start, Fast Start October 23, 2020

John called me at 8am wanting to go fishing today with his wife so I said yes and got ready.  Two hours later they were in the boat and off we went.  I got them on some fish from the beginning but I wanted them to catch something big.  I decided to run down to the flats and shark fish as John's wife really wanted to see sharks.  Well, we hooked 6 sharks and lost five, all to different reasons.  In the end, they were happy, I was happy and it was time to go home.

Redemption is so sweet! July 3, 2020 Report

I really needed this one. Two years ago David fished with me and got a bonefish. Today we were on the hunt for bonefish and permit under ideal conditions. But, I have to admit, I was still haunted by the big bonefish we lost on Monday so I was eager to make up for it and kick off my 4th of July weekend on the right note. David brought his friend Jeff and I took them to a bonefish and permit spot but the tide was really high for bonefish. Part of the issue was that I was running an hour late because of the number of boats trying to launch in the morning. Just crazy! Anyway, we saw some bonefish schools but they were too far away so off to spot 2 where there were some bonefish but many more permit. They had a bunch of shots but the permit were trickier than usual so off to spot three. That was the magic spot as I was able to locate a number of schools of big bonefish tailing and mudding in a foot of water. One school moved up and started feeding and moving to the left. David make the perfect cast and the school moved over his shrimp. As it unfolded I saw a fish tail on his shrimp, a puff of mud and a screaming drag. Yes! I had to pole after the big bonefish that was making a really long run and then it turned toward us and wrapped around one of the PowerPoles. Oh no! I was able to work a miracle and free the fish and moments later David was holding the big bonefish in his hands. Wow, what a relief and he just got a bigger bonefish than last time. Cool! We ended the day with a few more shots for Jeff and then headed back to the ramp. What a great day, great weather and great guys! Happy 4th of July!

January 7, 2016 Report

Arthur, his two daughters and one of his daughter's boyfriend were in town and wanted to do some fishing so I got another boat involved. We made the call to head out the day before due to weather and got a late start. On board with me was Arthur and one of his dauthers, Jo. The first goal was to get on some bonefish and we found a nice school of about a dozen fish mudding and feeding but couldn't get one. Then we headed to another spot where they caught snappers and jacks, keeping a few for shark bait. We wrapped up the trip shark fishing and Jo losing a nice spinner shark early on in the initial blistering run.

December 30, 2015 Report (Video!)

Today was my third consecutive day with multiple trips and it started with Bryan and Wayne from Kentucky. Bryan is a podiatrist for high-end race horses and Wayne is a blacksmith specializing in making horseshoes. The idea was to do some saltwater fly fishing as this was their first experience throwing a flying in the salt. The conditions were definitely challenging as we had a steady 17 - 18 mile an hour wind but we did have good angles with which to throw the fly. Going back to the same flat that I ended my trip yesterday proved to be unproductive. Making a quick run South to a typically productive mackerel spot also proved to be fruitless for myself as well as the other boats in the area. We ran back up to a third spot and that one produced some fish on fly including their first in the salt and their first with the new fly rods they had purchased. We wrapped up the day at a 4th spot and while they did not hook any fish they had plenty of fish including big sea trout come up and try to eat their flies.
My afternoon trip was with a client of mine Avery and Victoria. We fished last year and the conditions couldn't have been any more different. Last year we had air temperatures in the forties with high winds while today we had moderate winds and air temperatures in the mid eighties. What a difference! We fished two spots and that's all we needed as the fishing was solid at both spots. Victoria ended up with sore arms and big smiles and Avery realized how sweet my Quantum Smoke reels are as he put them to the test as well. These guys are always great and we had a great time including watching Victoria insist that every nice fish be boated for pictures in spite of getting fish slime and blood on her legs. She is a trooper!
