Out with March with a bang! March 16-31, 2026

As we end the month of March we had a cold front to deal with, high winds, no wind, cold and heat, what a crazy month!  Thankfully, fish still have to eat so it has been a good month with a few ups and downs towards the end.  Bonefishing has generally been good, tarpon not so good, permit have been around, shark fishing has been solid and the finger channels kept the clients and me busy.

On one trip recently with regular client Jake and his two friends Antonio and Nil we started slow and ended on fire.  We were looking for tarpon and there were none to be found, a sadly recurring theme this month as tarpon have been inconsistent, but we ended the trip with the guys releasing 10 bonefish.  Insane!  The last trip of the month I had Jesse and 14 year old Miles who wanted tarpon.  Ha, Miles hooked three monster tarpon but all three came off for different reasons.  A heartbreaker yes but man was it exciting!

In the finger channels we've been catching tons of look downs (weird but super cool fish), snappers, jacks and barracudas.  The sharks on the flats have been on a tear and showing up in big numbers and along shorelines and small back bays the ladyfish have been super fun on lures and especially on flies.

April will be another solid month so stick around and watch for mid April's report in a few weeks.

Easter in the 'Glades

No time off and no time to celebrate Easter in the traditional way, going to church, but I was giving thanks for all the blessings in my life while fishing with two great guys in the Everglades today.  I had Adam and his friend Larry for a full day in the Everglades.  The forecast was calling for light winds and when I pulled out of the marina I knew it would be a tough day with the water looking like chocolate milk from the high wind of the following days and super strong tides.  Anyway, I took them to a small island I have had good success at for snook and redfish but watch the tides because it gets very shallow very quick and I'd like to go home today.  Once there the tide was already half way out allowing me to only fish a third of the island but here the guys quickly got a few snook bites and each scored a snook in rapid succession.  To make a long day shorter on this report, it was terrible the rest of the day thanks to the extremely dirty water but we did find some tarpon towards the end of the now half day trip.  The problem is that the tarpon were focused on eating tiny inch long shrimp flowing out of a creek and the shrimp and lures we had were nothing like they were eating.  Urgh!  We went home.

Oh it was on today! January 8, 2021

It's Alec's birthday tomorrow and what a better way to spend the day than fishing with him.  Every time we fish we have a blast and the laugh are in steady supply.  We had a west wind and that caused the west side of the bay outside of the marina in Homestead to be super calm.  As we fished for snook, the first spot was slow.  I took him to another spot down the shoreline and it was on with tailing tarpon and big bonefish.  After numerous shot at a tarpon and not hooking up we turned our attention bonefish and quickly got a nice 9 lber to the boat.  The snook fishing was slow and we wrapped it up breaking in his new plug rod but there were no big fish around, probably due to the approaching cold front.  Happy birthday Alec!

Keith strikes again!!! October 9, 2020 (Video)

Some guys just have that "thing" where everything seems to work out for them and Keith is one of those guys.  Day two of fishing with Chris and Keith took place in Flamingo and once again we had less than ideal conditions with high winds, dirty water and high water.  Oh, and Chris tells me he really wanted Keith to catch tarpon, snook and redfish.  Hmmm, well if you're not into being constantly challenged then guiding isn't for you.  Spot one was slow but spot two held small tarpon and we went 0-2 on tarpon.  Hitting different spots trying to find low clean water was tough but I was able to find the right combination and the guys caught redfish with Keith catching the biggest of the day.  He needs to go play the lotto!

March 2, 2016 Report (Video!)

Today was the day that I've been waiting for since mid February because it was the day when Biscayne Bay finally went off! The morning started with George from New York, a regular client of mine, and his friend and coworker Joe meeting up at the marina at 6 a.m. We scooted off to South Beach in our search for Tarpon and once again there were tons of fish around with one big difference, the water temperature having increased about two degrees and the fish were friendlier than usual. George quickly hooked up to about an 80 pounder that gave us twoo savage jumps before spitting the hook. Drifting through waiting for another bite we were quickly distracted by big schools of spinner sharks. Taking advantage of the opportunity presented to us we quickly rigged up for them and proceeded to have an absolutely banner morning. We landed two and hook between seven and nine sharks. Most jacks and mutton snapper that we hooked wouldn't last long as we reeled them up to the boat and the spinner sharks making quick work of them. Close to the end of the trip I prepared for another drift or two when the guys said they've had enough, were exhausted and didn't think they could catch another fish. That is what fishing in Miami is all about and that is what I've been waiting for! Spring is here and its Tarpon time in Miami!

January 24, 2016 Report (Winter Tarpon Video!)

Friday we had a massive cold front, the same cold front tormenting the northeast and yesterday we had 30-40 MPH winds so I was looking forward to today. Meeting Charlie and Christina at 7am, they boarded and we were off. The conditions were brutal, temperatures in the 40's, 20 plus MPH winds, water temperatures in the high 60's, dirty water and steam coming off the water in spite of the wind. WOW! I had 4 layers on and I was still cold but I located some clean water in the lee of the wind and warmer incoming tide but struggled for the first half of the trip hooking and losing a spinner shark and missing a few bites. One the tide turned the bite was on and Charlie hooked his first tarpon, hooked a couple of really nice spinner sharks and caught a few other species. The trip ended on a high note and the run back felt shorter and warmer after the tarpon!
