Keith strikes again!!! October 9, 2020 (Video)

Some guys just have that "thing" where everything seems to work out for them and Keith is one of those guys.  Day two of fishing with Chris and Keith took place in Flamingo and once again we had less than ideal conditions with high winds, dirty water and high water.  Oh, and Chris tells me he really wanted Keith to catch tarpon, snook and redfish.  Hmmm, well if you're not into being constantly challenged then guiding isn't for you.  Spot one was slow but spot two held small tarpon and we went 0-2 on tarpon.  Hitting different spots trying to find low clean water was tough but I was able to find the right combination and the guys caught redfish with Keith catching the biggest of the day.  He needs to go play the lotto!

December 28, 2015 Report

Wow today was one of those days where I was absolutely swamped. Today I had three charters and each of them were completely different from the other as conditions seem to have changed constantly. My morning Charter was with Rob, Etan, and Eli. They fished with me last year and the kids caught a ton of fish and wanted to bend some rods again today. The grand father Rob is always a pleasure to have on board and he sat back, watched them and enjoyed every moment of it. We went to the first spot and it was on fire with fish after fish after fish that kept the kids busy, rods bend and arms sore. However boys being boys they wanted to explore so off we went to fish a couple of other spots that didn't produce. Realizing their young errors they decided to go back to the original spot and the hot streak continued. They had a blast and smiles were big throughout the boat.
My second trip of the day was with Jay and his wife Marta while their two kids were in a second boat that I had reserved for them. This was a special trip for Jay since back in November he tried to book me but his dad unfortunately died unexpectedly. I really wanted this to be a special day for them and put them on fish but the conditions deteriorated with winds blowing steady 20 miles an hour and gusting higher mudding up the water and limiting the areas that we could fish. We did get into some fish at the end of the trip including losing a grouper or two to pilings. These were great people and I look forward to fishing with him again. My third trip from this charter blitz today was with Dylan, Bill and John. Dylan is a fun and brave 9 year old little girl who had a blast catching fish from the moment the first bait hit the water. The wind had died down for this last trip and allowed us to fish an area that I knew would produce. She caught a ton of fish and it was a great day all around.

December 26, 2015 Report

Kids fishing charters are always a blats and today was no exception with David and his two boys 7 and 8 year old Elias and Theo. Staying close to the marina I took them to a spot perfect for kids and sheltered from the close to 20 MPH winds. We used up almost 100 shrimp as they aught a number of snappers, blur runners, jacks and even a small grouper. To add to the excitement, a manatee came up next to the boat, took a breath of air, looked at us and swam away. After about 2 hours of constant non-stop action the kids were worn out and took a "cheetos" break. Elias had never fished before but he mastered the fish catching routine rather quickly. The kids had a blast, the fish wore them out and Elias is now an expert!

December 23, 2015 Report (Unbelievable, must read!)

Guillame and Jess are from N.Y. and were taking advantage of a little vacation time and getting some fishing in. Guillame wanted to do some bonefishing but we had some obstacles in the form of 20MPH winds which is unusual for us this time of year. I used an old trick of mine and after a little while one of the rods doubles over and Jess lands the first fish of the day, a small shark. A bit later, another rod goes off and the other rod doubles over as well and we have a double header. They weren't running like bonefish and we brought the first fish to the boat and it was a small shark. Immediately after as Guillame is fighting his, a huge splash and a big dorsal fin erupts out of the 3' deep water. The shark takes off and we're both thinking the big shark had gotten hooked but not realized it until now. After a 10 minute fight, the rod snaps straight and we're thinking it broke us off. To our amazement, Guillame had hooked a small shark and a much bigger shark attacked it and the rod snapped back when the small shark was finally bit in half! Unbelievable! The next rod to go off was a solid 10 plus pound bonefish that spit the hook after the initial scorching run. Ouch! What a morning!

December 10, 2015 Report (Video!)

Anthony is from New York and was in town for his friends wedding so he decided to get a little fishing in will he was staying in paradise. We started the morning off on a productive grassflat and the first three casts yielded three difference species, lady fish, blue fish and spinner sharks all on artificial. What a way to get the morning started! The rest of the morning was very similar as we caught fish after fish after fish including a lot of sea trout, lady fish, blue fish and spinner sharks. There were few times at the beginning when blue fish were jumping out of the water as big spinner sharks were feeding on them. A quick cast into the area got an instant hookup for Anthony and moments later a big spinner shark was trying to devour his blue fish right on the surface. What a sight! Today was a solid day under cloudy but calm conditions, temperature in the seventies and red hot fishing. This is paradise in the winter time!

October 25, 2015 Report (Shark!)

Eliel didn't make it today and boy did he miss out! While the ladyfish action slowed, other species took their place and the shark fishing was on fire. We hooked 11 sharks in 3 hours of fishing the flats. Unfortunately we only landed 1 due to a number of reasons including pulled hooks and break offs. Urgh!

October 14, 2015 Report (Snook!)

Doug from TN was in town for business and swam against the current. While the rest of the guys went golfing, Doug went fishing. Good move Doug! Starting off South Beach for the mullet run proved to be slow since nothing ate our fly. Moving to tarpon spot two produced a few jacks on the fly rod and then we hit the tarpon mother load. Fish in the 20-60lb class were all over the boat rolling just 20' from the boat. We tried a number flies and had a few bites but no hook ups. Tarpon spot #2 was desolate so it was snook time. Doug decided it was better to catch fish than to stick to fly so we cast netted some bait and hit the creeks. Several snook hit our baits losing one to the mangroves and landing a nice one before we called it a day.

September 27, 2015 Report (Snook fest!)

On a guides day off my buddy Chris and I took his micro skiff down to the Everglades for some relaxing fishing for snook, tarpon and redfish. While we didn't see many reds we didn't even notice their absence due to the presence of so many snook and tarpon. Our first shoreline at first light held tons of small tarpon but wouldn't eat a perfectly tied dark tarpon fly. Once the switch was made to a gurgler, it was on! chris polled me into a creek we had heard some bait being busted and the tight creek gave me just enough room to make a cast a few seconds after a big explosion took place. Fly lands, strip, strip, strip, explosion, jump, jump, jump, tarpon on! Cool! The activity spooked the rest of the fish in the creek and fine by use as there were about 200 mosquitoes all over us. Another spot produced a snook for me and a couple more bites for us. After tucking into a creek to best avoid a rainstorm, the fishing just exploded in the calm after the rain. Total tally was 1 tarpon on fly, 12 snook, four trout, and well over a dozen missed bites by snook and tarpon as they would explode on the lure but not get hooked. I love a day off!

August 28, 2015 Report (Sharkfest!)

Ken jumped aboard again today and while I was excited at the weather report which called for slick calm conditions and the prospect of fishing for permit like we did on Saturday arriving at the marina proved different. It was still dark and the flags were moving pretty good so the breeze just axed our early morning permit aspirations. No fear, a back up plan is always available, we'll snook fishing instead. Working one of my favorite snook shorelines Ken tosses the top water lure against the shoreline and starts to work it back. Just a few feet away from the shoreline it gets slammed by a nice snook, it jumps and makes a run for the mangroves. Stopping him short the snook starts to come to the boat and right at the boat it spits the hook. Ouch! We had a few more snook strikes but the action quieted as the sun got brighter. Shark fishing was next and they were all over the place, it was common to have 3-4 5'-6' sharks around the boat. Ken hooked one 5' plus and landed him a number of long runs later. In the meantime sharks were still all around the boat and one of them got brave and ate the butterflied barracuda we were using for chum right off our bow, 3 feet from the boat! Great, our chum is gone and just like that the chum and the sharks were gone but not before hooking a 4 footer on lighter tackle but it spit the hook. The day ended bonefishing where Ken had several shots at bonefish but they were spookier than usual and would spook before they got over our baits.

May 23, 2015 Report

Mike and Jesus came in from Texas courtesy of their boss that treated them to a weekend in Miami for a job well done. After 1 1/2 hours of tarpon fishing and no bites but plenty of fish around we decided to change it up. Hitting the grass flats Mike and Jesus caught a bunch of trout, Jesus hooked and fought a spinner shark for a while and we were spared the unbearable Memorial Day boating traffic. Great job guys!

March 10, 2014 Report

Ken is in the process of moving from N.Y. and hadn't been bonefishing in over 6 years so it was time to give it a try. The conditions were certainly tough today with a stiff 20 MPH plus S.E. winds and not many places to hide but we did. Spot one was rather quite as was spot two. Humm, time to run really far south. In the shadows of Key Largo we get on the flat and immediately there are a few BIG bones racing by, I mean flying at warp speed. What's up with that? A few others spooked before we could get a cast to them. We staked out and waited for more of them to swim through but nothing. Poling another edge produced a couple of feeding bones but no time for a shot, they were acting crazy today. Last flat of the day I worked an edge I like on the tidal stage we had and sure enough, a group of four fish were working the edge but a half dozen shots at them didn't produce a strike. They were racing to one spot, feed then race to another behind them, not the usual more predictable behavior typical of bones. Capt. Mo Estevez www.MiamiBoneFishing.com 786-853-1409

March 5, 2015 Report

This morning soon to be local resident Steve wanted to take a brief 2 hour trip to survey the fishing behind his soon to be dock. We jumped into my skiff and idled 100 yards to a grass flat and didn't have to move from there. The main species was trout and there were plenty of them, including quite a few that got away to spit hooks. This was a nice trip with a great guy!

Back at the Ocean Reef Club in north Key Largo was my afternoon trip and this time it was a quick trip as my clients wanted to land a few fish and then head back in time for a meeting. We got an hour and a half worth of fishing and got some snappers in a creek before it was time to head back.

December 28, 2014 Report

Last year when Gary and his two 12 year old sons, Adam and Jake, fished with me one of the boys was severely out fished by the other. For a year one of the boys sought redemption while the other teased incessantly about out fishing him. Today this would change. Catching a well full of live pilchards, we headed to the finger channels where they caught mutton snappers and lost a few other nice fish. I couldn't help myself but taking them to some little known spots in the bay and they caught grouper of several sizes, mutton snappers, mangrove snappers and big blur runners. At one spot I threw out a hand full of live pilchards and immediately fish began busting on the bait with splashes and audible crashes. The first hooked bait that hit the water was slammed and the kids enjoyed some rather amazing non-stop drag screaming fishing until they called it quits and wanted to chase sharks. At one point I tied on a top water lure on 8lb test tackle and Gary caught several nice fish that blew up on the top water lure with amazing speed, splashing and ferocity. Several time we could see nice sized grouper come up top the surface and eat the baits! WOW, Miami is indeed an amazing place! Oh, and someone is enjoying some redemption!

December 23, 2014 Report

All the way from Brazil came Fabio to spend Christmas and New Years in Miami and along the way, get a little fishing done. Fabio had never fished the flats or inshore waters and wanted to try it out, a far cry from the sailfish tournaments he's fished for many years. Looking for tarpon and finding few of them we focused on lighter tackle and smaller gamefish. Trout fishing definitely improved over yesterday and Fabio caught several trout on soft plastics and hard plastic baits. We wrapped up the day in the finger channels where the action was absolutely on fire! Baits lasted less than 45 seconds before being slammed by a host of species such as mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, yellow tail snapper, big porgies, red grouper, big blue runners and a couple of nice fish we lost before getting to the boat. At the end of the day Fabio told me he loved the inshore fishing in Miami and definitely wanted to do it again. One of the recurring comments was how relaxing fishing inshore was. I agree!

Dan and his wife Ashley were in town from N.J. and took some time to explore Biscayne Bay. The fishing started slow with a few trout, caught by Ashley who reminded Dan she usually out fishes him anyway, and no tarpon to be found. We ended the day fishing the finger channels in between the flats and caught snappers before heading to the flats to look for sharks. The shark were apparently hanging out with the tarpon as they were MIA so we called it a day.

December 18, 2014 Report

On an exploratory mission, I fished with local angler and buddy Gil. The goal was to check out some spots in the bay and have some fun and it sure looked promising with clear skies, no wind and crystal clear water. Looking for bait along the shoreline we found several schools of bonefish and redfish cruising and occasionally tailing in 14" of water. Perfect casts by Gil were ignored so onto our search for bait. Finding none, We fished about a half dozen spots and some were better than others. Some had nice grouper on it but the minute we pulled up they would see us and leave. Others had giant barracudas on it and yet others held massive balls of snapper on it. We had a great time, I got the rare opportunity to fish and the day was absolutely perfect!

Today I fished with Richard for a relaxing day on the bay. We had absolutely gorgeous weather and calm winds. The goal was to fish a few spots for snapper and see what was hanging out in Biscayne Bay today. After looking in several places for bait and finding none, the live shrimp in the live well would do. The finger channels were a bit slow but we managed to catch mangrove snappers, small grouper, bar jacks, mutton snappers and a few mystery fish that ended our relationship sooner than we would have hoped. All in all it was a nice day.

December 9, 2014 Report

Fishing during a cold front always presents some interesting situations and today was one of those occasions. Bob and Tom were part of a 5 boat trip out of Key Largo and there was a pool of cash and bragging rights at stake for biggest fish. With cloudy skies, a cold 20 MPH wind and dirty water we headed out to have a good time, catch some fish and hopefully get them the pool of cash up for grabs. Fishing a creek I like produced just a few fish and a few lost fish to the bottom. A tarpon rolled about 100' away never to be seen again. We moved and staked out at the edge of a flat and targeted big mutton snappers. We caught several muttons, hogfish, and a small shark but no big muttons. Towards the end of the trip we staked out on a favorite flat of mine and began to shark fish. We had a few hits but no sharks. At the end of the trip, 4th quarter and 2 minutes left, one of the rods goes off, Bob grabs it and something jumps clear out of the water. With drag screaming and rod bent, Bob brings to the boat a big barracuda. A few pictures later we release it and head in. Later on Bob send sends me a text letting me know they won bragging rights and the pool of cash with the largest fish. Congrats Bob and Tom!

December 6, 2014 Report

Regular client David brought his buddy David aboard today and the weather was just gorgeous. We had another day of clear skies, cool breeze and nice action. Starting on the calm side of a key, I cast netted all the live bait we would need on our half day trip and sped off to an area David and I fished the last time he was in town. Anchoring up we dropped back some baits and caught mutton snappers, BIG mangrove snapper, grouper and we lost a few other fish. Fishing another area we caught a few more fish and then moved off to the flats in order to try and get David his first big shark on the flats. We had only 45 minutes to accomplish our mission and a nice 6' shark moves in and hangs around but refuses to eat any of our baits. As we pull up the push pole and start to drift off the flat a big 7' shark comes in fast and pushing tons of water. I cast a bait in front of it and he eats it right away. I hand the bent rod to David and the drag starts to scream in short bursts but 30 seconds later the hook pulls free and the big shark that didn't know was hooked swims away. Dangit!
