May 14, 2016 AM & PM Report

AM Report Day 2 with Doug and today his friend Pete was aboard. Tarpon fishing resulted in no hook ups so we changed it up and caught trout. Well, Pete lost a lot of trout. ;) Sorry Pete. We hit the flats and bonefishing was slow but we did get a few shots and saw a permit. The day ended with me hooking a nice mutton snapper while showing he guys what technique to use and Pete landed that one. A few minutes later the trip ended with Pete hooking and losing a BIG mutton snapper. You owe me Pete! PM Report My afternoon trip was an abbreviated trip with local angler and client Will and his little girl Malory. Combined they caught over 30 fish and we ended the trip with a tarpon drift but no takers.

Doug and his wife Rochelle had booked me almost a year ago and today was the big day. The trip started with tarpon fishing and while we found a few we couldn’t get them to eat. Changing gears we used jigs and aught a number of species and gave Rochelle a workout. Moving on to the flats Doug was sight casting big barracuda but we had the rubber hook syndrome today with ‘cudas smashing his lure but not getting hooked. Finally one did get hooked, made a run, jumped 4’ in the air and came off. Oh no! Along the way Doug had a couple of shots at bonefish but we didn’t get a hook up. Having a live bait in the well I rigged it up on some wire and tossed it to a group of 6 ‘cudas. They rushed the bait, encircled it and watched it. What the heck is up? A nice lemon shark saw the bait, elbowed the ‘cudas out of the way and gobbled it up. Once it felt the sting of the hook it made a 75 yard blazing run and after a nice fight Doug got his shark. Very cool!

Jeff had tried to book me last year but I was booked up and he was nice enough to give me another try this year. The goal was bonefish and we had less than ideal conditions with cloud cover and spotty visibility. We did find some bones but they were tough shots. At the end with even less visibility we were relegated to fishing muds and Jeff got one to eat but missed the hook set. Ouch! Capt. Nicky and Jake were at the Ocean Reed Club for a business retreat and meetings and part of the activities was fishing. They jumped aboard and we hit the flats for some shark fishing. Nicky had also never caught a fish and immediately she hooked up to a small shark and landed it. Jake got one as well and we wrapped up the trip with Nicky scoring another shark as time expired. She became a pro!

Dustin and his friend joined me today and while Dustin does fish, his friend had never caught a fish. Well, she did today! We had decent action on trout and a few other species as we worked our way to South Beach where I dropped them off at a small marina just a few blocks from their hotel. Capt. May 9, 2016 Report (Tarpon Video!)

This is year 3 for Matt and his little daughter Diana fishing with me. The goal this year as in prior years was tarpon for Matt and lots of steady action for Diana. We had another day of gorgeous weather and started off early at 7 a.m. and I have to admit Diana is a trooper because she was at the ramp at 7 a.m. with high spirits and a big smile. We went to our first Tarpon spot and that proved to be the only spot necessary as Matt hooked up on our second pass and after an hour-and-a-half fight landed his Tarpon that I estimated about 160 pounds. He gave us a great fight, some great jumps and some tough down and dirty action. After that it was time to get Diana on some fish so I took them to a spot we have fished before and she caught tons of fish on almost every single cast. We ended thate the day on the flats looking for Bonefish and finding a few. This was another great trip with Matt and Diana and I love fishing with these guys they are awesome! Congrats Matt on your first tarpon!

May 7, 2016 Report (Video!)

Guillermo is a local and his daughter Bibiana was in town spending time with her family so what better way to spend quality time than fishing. Our start was looking for snook and while we found some they would not eat out top water lures. Moving off to a nearby wreck they caught snapper and runners. Using the runners as bait they were hoping to catch a shark. There was a surprise in store for them! Arriving at the first flat I staked out and here comes a big shark. I wasn't ready! I rigged a rod as quickly as I could, got a bait out and tossed it in front of the big shark. Seconds later the line starts to peel off the reel and I hand the rod to Bibiana. A grueling 50 minutes later I needed help from Guillermo boating the big shark for a photo op. This is one of the biggest sharks I have put in the boat since I usually leave any in the 6 foot range in the water. Having had enough and Bibiana and Guillermo doing a great job on the behemoth we fished another wreck that was on fire with snapper, bar jacks, lesser amberjack and more going through about 70 shrimp. What a way to end a great day!
