January 25, 2020 Report
It's a bit warmer today with air temp in the high 60's as I fished out of Key biscayne today with Sean, Sean and Trevor. They wanted to catch a couple of fish to get warmed up before trying for tarpon. The first spot was slow but they caught small grouper, snapper and a jack. Then we hit the beach and found a bunch of tarpon. They were moving north and back south as we drifted our baits in front of them. Just as things were getting good, a massive bulk shark devoured a tarpon about 100 yards away and the tarpon made a disappearing act. With some time left we hit a nearby ship wreck in 10 feet of water and quickly went through 6 dozen shrimp on snapper, jacks and blue runners.

After a couple of days off I was back to work with Ken and Renee on the heels of a cold front that dropped night time temperatures into the upper 30's. With slick calm conditions I fished a shoreline for bonefish on fly but the water temps were a 63 degrees. We crossed the bay to the oceanside flats looking for warmer water and we found them but the water was dirty due to the last couple of days' wind and some cloud cover. After working a few flats we decided to catch fish instead of hunt for fish. I had to fish 3 wrecks before locating fish but we did and we ended the day on a blitz with nice mangrove snappers, blue runners, small grouper and more.

Well, I have to say that winter is in full swing here and I had Jonas and Miko on board this morning for some bonefish hunting on fly. A cold front had just passed and the wind was blowing 26 MPH, BUT it was coming from the nw allowing us to fish the shoreline that was slicked out. We had plenty of shots and missed a couple of takes and we ended the morning covered in schools crossing from one flat to another but they were spookier than usual.

January 20, 2020 Report
I can honestly tell you that this job has a surprise waiting at every turn, whether it's weather, fish, clients, crazy stuff happening on the water, it really keeps me on my toes with today being one of those days. I had given a colleague of mine a trip for Sunday because I was already booked with Dan and Lee but my buddy's engine acted up and canceled the trip. So, I ended up taking Francisco and Marco instead today. They were anxious to bend a fly rod and mix it up with spin gear. I took them to try and get a tarpon but they were on a diet so we ditched the prized gamefish hunt and focused on bending the fly rod. After a couple of slow spots, the last one paid off and it was on! They caught jacks, pompano, snappers on spin and fly but that wasn't the highlight. Francisco hooked up something nice and fought it for a bit and then it comes to the surface. A black drum!!!!!!! I never have, and no one I know has ever seen or caught a black drum in Biscayne Bay as these fish are mostly int he Everglades. This was awesome and a thrill for me. I explained to the guys why I was so excited but they still thought I was crazy. LOL!

January 18 and 19, 2020 Report
Dan and Lee were recommended to me by a client of mine and we were booked for two days for fly fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. Well, turns out Saturday it was blowing a steady 35 MPH and those were the only two days the guys could fish so off we went. In the lee of the wind I found some tarpon for them where they cast flies and free lined back a live crab. Not long after, a big tarpon eats the crab and is off to the races but it spit the hook after the first big jump. Later on we ran down to the flats and chummed up some bonefish but they apparently weren't seeing our baits and flies and never did hook up. I ended the day back at the tarpon spot but now the fish were hunkered down on the bottom (not a good sign) and wouldn't eat.
On Sunday the weather was much better and we had better conditions with more options. Back to the previous day's morning tarpon and now Dan hooked up to a big permit and after a nice fight the permit spit the circle hook right next to the boat just moments before I could get a hold of it. Wow, that sucks! A bit later Lee got a bite but never felt it and came back with a clean hook. The rest of the day we spent fly fishing the flats where the guys had shots at permit and some bonefish. When the tide turned and started coming in the flats became desolate of life so we went back to the tarpon and they were rolling but we didn't hook up.

Last time I fished with Katrina she wanted to work on her fly fishing but it was blowing 20 MPH. Today she brought her boyfriend Ethan and it was blowing harder than that. Geeze! Well, I took them to a spot that has been producing out of the wind (since I've been fishing in 30-35 MPH winds regularly) and we were on fish. They caught pompano and jacks and a few other missed fished, Katrina worked on her fly fishing, Ethan caught dinner then I took them on a tour of the bay so Ethan can check out the place. But, the highlight for me was watching Katrina bait Ethan's hook.
Very cool trip today!

Wow, my last day fishing was Thursday and it has been 40 MPH winds every day ever since! Today was the first day with decent winds and Greg booked me again to fish with him and his two nephews Alex and Thomas from Canada. I decided to try a spot that has been producing and that was the ticket with fish on almost every cast including pompano, ladyfish, jacks, snapper and bluefish. The guys took a break, ate lunch then we drifted a bait in a channel for sharks where we got broken off within moments and then back to close out the day with the same fast and furious action. This was nice!

Kent and I have been fishing for a while and he is always a blast to fish with but this is the first time we fished with his bright and tough 12 year old daughter Brooke. I haven't laughed so hard over 2 days as much as I have with these two. The first day we had good weather, caught plenty of fish and then tried for bonefish twice but no go. The second day was a bit tough with winds in the 35 MPH range but we fished the leeward side of islands and we were fine. What a blast these two as the caught sharks, jacks, snappers, trigger fish, ladyfish and more. On the second day Kent hooked a nice jack on lures and then had a big bull shark eay his jack and get hooked. Well, that fight lasted a while until we decided to break it off and continue with the day.

After a solid run of charters and then nothing for a few days I decided to take my family on a quick vacation but today I was back to work with an afternoon trip out of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. I had the pleasure of fishing with Silva and Bryan to show them around the bay. Silva didn't even think she wanted to spend 4 hours on a boat but we had such a good time all 4 hours were used up. They caught a variety of species and when we tried to shark fish we ended up using the remaining time to rescue a kayaker who had paddled way too far and was stuck with the prospect of having to spend the night on the water.

AM Trip
Jeff and his two boys have fished with me every year for the last several years so it was good to see them again. I took them to a ship wreck where they caught some snappers, lost a few nice grouper and then kept a few blue runners for bait. Using the blue runners we hit the flats and they were slow but we did manage a few sharks along the way.
PM Report
My afternoon trip had Phillip fishing solo and it was a great time fishing with him. We tried a few different spots and picked up fish along the way but it was definitely slow. After deciding to go with what worked in the morning we focused on sharks and he landed a couple that were a handful including a nice lemon shark.

Happy New Year everyone! I've been super busy and 2020 started with a bang.
AM Trip
My morning trip was with Ryan and his boys and the goal was to make sure the boys caught fish. Well, we stayed close to the marina and they did just that, so many so that they needed to take brakes in between. Cool!
PM Trip
My afternoon trip was with Mark and also his daughter and the goal was the same, make sure she catches plenty of fish. I took them back to the same morning spot and that had slowed down so we tried a few other spots until we located fish and caught snappers, jacks and more.

December 31st, 2019 Report (Bonefish Video)
A cold front moved through overnight and I was hoping for clear skies and light winds, which I did not get. But, Andrew and Tom wanted bonefish and since I am a bonefish junkie I was up for it. I made a run to the only and best place to bonefish and it worked out. Andrew was 2 for 2 and Tom was 0 for 2. Humm, we have to work on that Tom, LOL. The run back was nice with clearing skies but that was fine since we accomplished our goal and had a blast doing it. I love my job, happy new year's eve everyone!

Tim and his wife Sandy fished with me about 5 years ago and had a great time. Today it was 6 of them so I had tow other boats take out the other two couples. Well, it was one stop fishing for us. I fished some structure that had been producing and fished there the entire trip catching hard fighting jacks as Sandy had to take a break or two to rest from the sore arms. Great people and great times with them!
PM
My afternoon trip was with Dave and his son Charlie. They wanted either tarpon or just to catch anything and with it being too windy to tarpon fish we fished for anything. The jacks had largely disappeared from my morning trip but we did catch a couple. I decided to make a move and the guys were Ok fishing in the rain so we hit the flats and Charlie got a nice lemon shark. Cool!

I had a change of pace today and some better weather as I took David and Kevin down to the Everglades for a change of scenery. This is such a cool place and the guys slayed the fish catching a ton of trout, jacks and lady fish. The wind had been howling from the east for a few days so there was dirty water in most of the places I wanted to fish but it worked out and they told me they hadn't caught that many fish in years. But, as we tried to fish for redfish we got forced off the water by a storm. A few times David asked me to make a cast to see if I could catch a fish, well it was one cast, one fish for me on several occasions until he stopped asking me to cast. So funny!!!!!! By the way, he would call me names each time I caught a fish. LOL

I hadn't fished with Glenn and his boys for years and today I realized the boys were now men. Wow! The day had some tough conditions for us but they caught mackerel and a few other fish but the weather had us blocked in unable to make long runs to try out different areas.
PM
The afternoon trip was with Craig and his son and the weather had cleared by now allowing us to make a bit of a run and hit some spots where they guys stayed busy keeping the rods bent and had a great time.

Just when everything was going well, this trip happened. I fished with Kivi and his son in law today, both really cool guys and in spite of my best efforts the fishing was slow. While the guys caught fish, it was nothing to write home about. How disappointing!
