Max the fishing machine December 29, 2021

Richie is a boater while his 14 year old son is a hard core fisherman from AL (spoiled in the college football world!) so this trip was for Max and Max wanted bonefish.  I took them to a flat that has been producing and we got to work.  It started ugly with Max going 0 for 2 before Richie got his first bonefish.  Oh, oh.  After me feeling some stress because I really want Max to land one, losing one 2 feet from the boat doesn't count, I see Max set up and the reel sing.  Yes, wait, no yes, let's wait until he lands it.  Max did a great job fighting his fish and listening to me suggestions and then the silver bullet we all love slipped into the landing net.  YES!  Wanting to try something different I took them to a spot where they caught 5lb jacks on every cast and the bass fisherman in Max came out with the hook sets.  Congrats Max!

The Burgis December 28, 2021

They're back in town and back in the boat.  Jeff and his boys Drew the fishing maniac and Will jumped in and off we went.  We tried permit fishing but that was slow.  We tried tarpon fishing off the beach but the wind picked up pretty quickly and we had to high tail it back before it got too rough.  Then off to bonefishing and that was slow so we wrapped it up with constant action on jack crevalles.

Dang, heartbreak! December 27, 2021

Doug and Rochelle have fished with me plenty before so we were at it on our annual fishing trip.  We started just bending rods on some wrecks to get Rochelle some action before bonefishing.  After catching some snappers and bluerunners the tide was right and off we went.  Getting to the flat we started our bonefishing and it was slow at first but then these bones started moving in and we missed a bite, then another school and we miss two bites on what could have been a double header.  Come on bonefish!  Then three big bones move in and Rochelle hooks up and the bonefish starts ripping line.  I could tell it was an 8-9lb fish but after the long run the bonefish started to settle down and the hook pulled.  Ouch!  I had a hard time sleeping tonight.

Tyler's Christmas Gift December 26, 2021

Boy have I been busy but I took Christmas Eve and Christmas day off but I was back to work today.  Steve has fished with me a few times this year and his son Tyler joined him today.  After bending the rod a bit on snappers and the like we hit the flats when the tide was right.  Tyler hadn't caught a bonefish before so I was eager to get him one.  Well, just like his dad that seems to attract fish, Tyler got his first bonefish and then upgraded with a bigger one before the trip was over.  First try!

Incredible day! December 23, 2021

Two more trips today and my morning trip was with Michelle and Jack.  The goal was to bonefish and then go catch anything else but boy was I concerned as the morning temps were in the low 50's and the water temps had dropped 3-5 degrees.  Spot one for bonefish was dead but spot two paid of with Jack getting his first bonefish.  The rest of the trip was downhill as the fishing never did recover and all I could produce for Michelle were two jacks.  This was tough and I was not looking forward to fishing my afternoon clients at this point.  But I remembered yesterday and how the fishing improved in the afternoon so all hope was not lost.

As soon as I dropped off Michelle and Jack, Vera and Ed jumped aboard.  Hmm, they just wanted to catch anything so I changed it up and took advantage of the incoming tide and took them to an oceanside spot.  Man that was the ticket.  They wore themselves out on big 5-7 lb blue runners, yellow jacks and barracudas on almost every cast.  What a difference!  As the tide changed and started to go out the fishing slowed and I took them to a bonefish spot.  WOW, WOW, WOW!  We set up and had about 45 minutes left in the trip and the bonefishing was on fire and they landed 7 bonefish and hooked 8, including a double header!  The rods would not stop going off with bonefish coming to the boat every few minutes, it was incredible!  What a recovery from my morning trip and what a way to start to days off to celebrate Christmas.  Merry Christmas everyone!

Double the Magic December 22, 2021

I had two trips today and my morning trip was with repeat client Bob and his wife Anna.  Well, it was windy and cold but we fished some areas that usually work out in those conditions and they did today again.  Using live shrimp Anna hooked a nice tarpon but it broke off after the 5th jump, she probably didn't mind as her wrist was already hurting her.  :)  Not long after Bob got a snook but the fishing was slowing down with tarpon around us but not feeding.  I took them to another spot where they caught a bunch of jacks and another snook and we wrapped it up tarpon fishing the last 30 minutes.

As soon as I dropped them off Ryan and his family jumped aboard and off we went for my afternoon trip.  Man the fishing took off as the tide turned and the sun warmed us up a bit.  These guys killed it!  They caught 14 species in the same spot for four hours with fish on almost every cast!  Son Knox lost a nice bonefish next to the boat, Ryan caught a permit and a nice grouper while other son Mac wasn't far behind.  When the trip ended they had caught:

Bonefish

Permit

Grouper

Hog fish

Jacks

and more!

That's winter for you.

He just catches studs! December 20, 2021

Can you believe we are only 5 days away from Christmas?  Anyway, Eric has fished with me plenty of times before and on his first trip last year he wanted to try bonefishing.  So, he proceeds to land a 12 pounder and his father in law a 10 pounder, dang!  Well today he brought his friend Cosmo who doesn't fish so I kept it simple with snappers and blue runners and they had a blast.  I then took them to shark fish on the edge of a flat and after a while Cosmo hooks up to a nice lemon shark and proceeds to break him off deep into the long blistering run.  As I set up again I look back and there's a school of mudding bonefish a decent cast off our stern!!!!  I rigged a shrimp but when I cast they were moving away.  Hmm, there should be another school.  Yes, there was indeed another school and this time Eric scored!  The initial run had the water was rooster tailing off the line and I could tell this was a big fish.  Well, several solid runs later Eric had a slob bonefish at the side of the boat.  Dang, Eric just catches stub bonefish!

Making the Kids Happy December 18, 2021

Some trips are just fun and today I had John with his boys, 7 year old Arvand and 9 year old Daksie (Dakota).  The trip was cool as the boys just wanted to catch fish and have fun and that they did with an assortment of snappers, jacks, barracudas and more.  The total tally was Arvand 15 fish Daksie 8 fish (boy they lost plenty more!).

Redemption! December 13, 2021

After a slow week last week that I could hardly stomach I had the weekend off and patiently waited for my Monday trip with Jim in order to see if fishing had improved and find some kind of redemption.  So, Jim jumps in the boat and off we go.  Jim wanted to fly fish but with steady 20 MPH winds that would be difficult so Jim was smart enough to decide to pick up a spinning rod at the beginning of the trip and we targeted bonefish.  Well, it didn't take long for Jim to tie in to a nice bonefish and enjoy the blazing fast runs.  After a release he was at it again and not 10 minutes later he was on again!  Another release and he was ready for something else.  I took him to a tarpon spot that was void of tarpon so off to a snook spot that had no snook but had tarpon, go figure.  He tossed flies at the 3-40lb rolling tarpon but after a period of no bites we wrapped up the trip catching jacks on fly and he had a blast.  It's tough not enjoying jacks on fly.  Whew, I can sleep better tonight!

Not this time Mike December 13-17, 2021

Wow, what a rough week for Mike and I as we fly fished this week.  I had started to notice a downward trend on my trip with Gabby and Bella as the fishing started to slow but wow this was humbling.  We fished most of the days out of Homestead and one day out of Key Biscayne.  All in all Mike caught fish but they were all small.  The highlight was us snook fishing at the end of one of the days and he mentions how he would like to catch a snook off the mangroves.  Ha, 30 minutes later a snook eats his fly tossed into the mangroves and he was once again spoiled.  In my search for action for Mike I took him offshore on a calm morning to fly fish for big mackerel but there were 6-8 other boats at the spot in 80' of water live baiting and no one caught anything except for Mike who got his first bonita on fly.  Go figure!  Tough week for sure.

The girls December 4, 2021

I think it's so cool when a woman loves to fish and is willing to do it on her own as was the case with Bella who invited her friend Gabby along for some fishing.  Initially they wanted to bonefish but when they said they just wanted to catch fish then we changed it up.  I took them to a ship wreck where Gabby caught her first fish and more and then we hit the flats for sharks where it took longer than usual but Bella had two bites and lost the second shark close to the boat after about a 15 minute fight.  These ladies rock!

"Laughing all the way" December 3, 2021

Man these guys were funny.  I had Max and his childhood friend aboard and these guys were hilarious, generally "fish bagging" all trip long.  We were bonefishing and we stuck to the plan but with high water it was tough to find them in time to throw a fly to them as the king tides gave us about 2 feet of extra water.  Anyway, we had some shots, blew out some fish and the struck out on snook but along the way they caught some jacks and missed a few snook bites on lures.

Just doing our thing December 2, 2021

Berry was onboard today with for a morning of generally chasing bonefish.  We've had beautiful weather so far and today was one of those days.  We chased some bones around but couldn't hook up so we finished off the trip bending rods on an assortment of species to keep the rods bent.

Two cool days November 30/December 1, 2021

I had the pleasure of spending two days with Chris from Indiana as a first time client.  Chris had spent a lot of time in Biscayne Bay in the past so it was cool to show him around again.  The first day we bounced around different spots and ended up bonefishing where Chris got his first bonefish in a while not long after we started bonefishing.  On day two we focused more on just throwing lures and that was even more fun.  The total tally at the end of day two was pompano, mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, horse eye jacks, jack crevalles and barracudas.  Chris went through a streak of fish on every cast for a good while.  Winter is almost here and the mackerel, bluefish and pompano provided that today.
