This has been tough! January 24, 2022

Wow, this is incredible!  In January I am usually swamped with work and very few days off but not January 2022.  Between the surging Omicron virus and the flight cancelations due to the virus travel has come to a stand still and I was off for about two weeks, just crazy.  Well, today I was back to work with Ruven who has fished with me before.  He usually likes to throw lures only and we do well.  The same today but the start was slow as I took him to a few different places that have worked for me recently.  At one spot there were a bunch of snook but with lower than normal water temps they were not willing to play as they focused on warming up.  Towards the end of the trip we decided to use the live shrimp I had in the live well and things got good with non stop action on mahogany snapper, yellow jacks and more.

Today I fished with Ethan again and he brought his friend Nathan.  We started off looking for snook but they were MIA and then we switched to fishing to make sure Nathan caught some fish, and he did!  The guys ended up having a nice trip with a bunch of varieties and plenty of action catching snappers, yellow jacks, big blue runners, shark and more.

First trip of the year January 6, 2022

This is really crazy, we're already in 2022 and it feels like we skipped over 2020.  Any way, happy new year everyone!  Business and the fishing was on fire but as soon as the new year hit with the huge spikes in Covid infections and flight cancellations things got quite quick but not for regular client Alex, his dad Bert and their friend Karim.  I was looking for a good day today with Alex and it was good from the first cast.  I took them to a spot where there have been plenty of species within 50' of each other and they warmed up on jacks, small grouper, snappers and look downs.  As the spot started to sputter I took them to the finger channels where we caught the last of the tide and they caught plenty of yellow jack and snapper dinner.  Once the tide stopped and the fishing slowed I took them tarpon fishing but they were MIA so off we went to bonefish.  Dang, it started tough as we missed two solid bites and then lost two hooked fish.  However, towards the end Bert hooks up and caught his first bonefish in decades.  Awesome!

The Last Trip December 3, 2021

Last trip with Jeff, Will and Drew out of a three day trip today.  Taking advantage of the tide we looked for permit but they were MIA as were the bonefish.  Hmm, Drew usually catches bonefish with me but we've struck out the last two times.  However, they wanted to focus on catching fish to eat so we put the glory species aside and searched for dinner.  A spot we tend to fish together produced, big time!  At first it was pretty slow but I moved about 50 feet and man that was the trick.  Fish are weird how they can be a few feet away and you don't know it.  Well, I figured they wouldn't be too far away and the minor change paid off.  It was fish on every cast for all three catching big yellow jacks, mangrove snapper, mutton snappers, look downs and more.  They took plenty of fish back to the hotel and I wrapped up a great year on a high note with great clients/friends.  Happy new year everyone!

Max the fishing machine December 29, 2021

Richie is a boater while his 14 year old son is a hard core fisherman from AL (spoiled in the college football world!) so this trip was for Max and Max wanted bonefish.  I took them to a flat that has been producing and we got to work.  It started ugly with Max going 0 for 2 before Richie got his first bonefish.  Oh, oh.  After me feeling some stress because I really want Max to land one, losing one 2 feet from the boat doesn't count, I see Max set up and the reel sing.  Yes, wait, no yes, let's wait until he lands it.  Max did a great job fighting his fish and listening to me suggestions and then the silver bullet we all love slipped into the landing net.  YES!  Wanting to try something different I took them to a spot where they caught 5lb jacks on every cast and the bass fisherman in Max came out with the hook sets.  Congrats Max!

The Burgis December 28, 2021

They're back in town and back in the boat.  Jeff and his boys Drew the fishing maniac and Will jumped in and off we went.  We tried permit fishing but that was slow.  We tried tarpon fishing off the beach but the wind picked up pretty quickly and we had to high tail it back before it got too rough.  Then off to bonefishing and that was slow so we wrapped it up with constant action on jack crevalles.

Dang, heartbreak! December 27, 2021

Doug and Rochelle have fished with me plenty before so we were at it on our annual fishing trip.  We started just bending rods on some wrecks to get Rochelle some action before bonefishing.  After catching some snappers and bluerunners the tide was right and off we went.  Getting to the flat we started our bonefishing and it was slow at first but then these bones started moving in and we missed a bite, then another school and we miss two bites on what could have been a double header.  Come on bonefish!  Then three big bones move in and Rochelle hooks up and the bonefish starts ripping line.  I could tell it was an 8-9lb fish but after the long run the bonefish started to settle down and the hook pulled.  Ouch!  I had a hard time sleeping tonight.
