Jaws on the flats June 2, 2023

Lisa had booked a trip for her kids to get out and so some fishing.  Well, the kids wanted to catch anything that was fun and have a good time.  I have to tell you, it was tough not going bonefishing with the perfect conditions we had but it's OK.  I took them to a channel to catch some bait and after keeping a few blue runners we were off to the flats.  The flats were slicked out and HOT but we had good current to disperse the scent and the sharks started to come in.  In short order both of the kids hooked and released their sharks and then they decided to call it a day because of the heat and a building storm right over the marina.  We made in back just in time and waited out the rain under a roof until it stopped and they were able to jump into their Uber.  Cool day, no sarcasm intended.  :)

Monster for the first timer! May 27, 2023

Man some guys are spoiled and my spoiled I mean Chad from TX and by spoiled I also mean a 13lb bonefish for his first bonefish ever. WHAT?!  Yes! Crazy!  Well, this is what happened.  Chad and his friend Adam jump aboard and the morning was good but not slicked out no wind morning.  I ran to the spot I fished yesterday where we had all the tailing bonefish and zippo.  Ha, that's my life, here one day gone the next.  Off to the next spot and that was it.  The fish were moving through as expected and in no time Chad had a 13lb bonefish in his hands.  He had been bonefishing several times before but drew blanks.  Well, today he hit a grand slam home run.  Then, another bonefish at about 9 pounds, then an 8 pounder, then a 9, then a 6 and on it went until he had gone 6 for 6 on bonefish with the smallest a 6 pounder.  Dang what a morning!!!  Oh did I mention this was a half day trip?  Just crazy!

BTW, this pic is not of the 13 pounder.  The pic of the 13 pounder came out OK but I thought this was a better pic.

Tailing Bonefish Fest! May 26, 2023

I took a few days off and was back to work today with local angler Henry and his friend Mike from S.C. and they wanted to fish the flats.  Well, with perfect conditions "fishing the flats" means bonefish!  I started off fishing a point I like with the outgoing tide but the bones were MIA.  Hmmm, that's weird.  OK, on to the next flat and that was the ticket.  This spot is pretty good under the right conditions and we had those conditions but I didn't think it would be THIS good!  From the moment we got there it was constant shots at tailing bonefish.  WOW!  But, they were spooky with no wind, calm conditions and super shallow water.  After a ton of shots Mike hooked a nice fish and deep into the long run the bone spit the hook.  Heartbreak!  More shots and more shots and Henry drops his shrimp way in front of a school of tailing bonefish and Mike does the same.  We watch the school move towards their shrimp and Mile in on again but this time the bone stayed hooked and the pic below proves it.  Shortly after it was time to head in just as the tide died off and so did the fishing.  I love mornings like this!

Two trips for Sunday May 21, 2023

Today I had two trips and I can tell you I was not looking forward to it, not because of the clients but because of the crazy boat traffic.  Well, I launched the boat in the early morning craziness and long time clients Raja and Emily jumped aboard and left the insanity behind.  With fly rods in hand they had plenty of shots at bonefish as they cruised and waked toward us.  Unfortunately we couldn't get a fly close to them and time ran out before we knew it.  I ran back to the ramp and waited for Kevin, his son and their friend.  since they were running a bit late I was able to eat lunch and stay out of the fray as boats continued to launch and the ramp closed as it was full to capacity.

Well, with Kevin and the guys aboard we hit the flats for sharks and there was hardly anyone on the flats.  Yes!  After the guys each hooked and caught sharks we decided to bonefish as that was something Kevin had mentioned.  It was towards the end of the tide and the current was starting to wane but eventually we found some fish and Kevin landed his first bonefish, a really nice one!  Not long after we headed back and enjoyed the thrill of Kevin's first bonefish.

Local clients Maria and Elissa booked me for a half day after almost a year of them working way too much.  They always like to fish for dinner trade fish for mangos with their neighbor.  LOL  The first few spots proved slow with smaller snappers but the last two spots were the ticket and they took home several tasty yellow jacks for dinner.

It just got better! May 15, 2023

Kristin had contacted me a month ago and pre paid for her husband Telby's charter as a birthday gift.  After a few reschedules due to weather today was the day.  Telby wanted to fly fish for bonefish so off we went.  The first spot was the Telby landing four bonefish right off the bat within the first couple of hours and at one point he was hooking fish on every third cast, it was nuts!  From there we fished a finger channel for Kristin but the yellow jacks weren't home so we wrapped it up poling some more for bones.  What a day!

Lem May 9-11, 2023

Lem, he can catch fish and this was our first time fishing together.  Over the course of three days the fishing kept improving slightly and we had great conversations and lots of laughs.  Lem sight casted a huge yellow jack on a bonefish flat, then a big jack crevalle that got eaten by a 12' hammerhead shark just 20 feet from the boat on the flats and then 4 bonefish.  One of the bones was 9 pounds, a real stud.  We were fishing shrimp the three days and crabs for a few shots at permit that didn't quite work out.
