What a day! May 28/29, 2022

Scott fly down from north Florida for two days of bonefish and permit fishing.  The boat traffic at the marina was insane being Memorial Day weekend but once on the water it was surprisingly quiet as we focused on bonefish and permit.  Day one was insane with Scott going 7 for 9 on bonefish before taking a break and encouraging me to make a few casts which I did and quickly landed a bonefish as well.  Day two we focused on permit and while it started quite the permit finally woke up at the end of the incoming tide and Scott had a ton of shots before the breeze kicked up and ended that fishing.  We went back to bonefishing which we did about 15 minutes worth before having to high tail it back to the marina before a significant storm got the best of us.

First time fishing salt May 27, 2022

I don't know what to say.  Some guys are just spoiled that way and well Joe is one of those guys.  I had Nolan, Luke and Joe on board and they wanted to fish for bonefish and permit with a steady 15 plus MPH wind.  Hmm, no worries I'll stick to what has been working but it took some faith.  Eventually Joe hooks up and the reel screams with a few long runs and some stubborn closer to the boat brawl.  When the dust settled I had Joe's first permit in the landing net and Jow as screaming like a mad man.  We got the pics, the release and then the admission, this was his first time fishing in salt water.  WHAT????  Time to retire dude!  Luke and Nolan missed a few fish, probably smaller bonefish before Luke landed a solid 10lb bonefish.  Dang, what a day!

Man on Fire May 25, 2022

John is from D.C. and likes to use artificials so that was the plan but we would be limited in the relentless 20 MPH wind.  Right when we got onto a flat there were snook busting mullet and we invested about an hour throwing all manner of lures at these 30" snook that kept flying out of the water chasing bait but to no avail.  We moved on to the next spot for bonefish and it was game on for the next four hours with John going 6 for 7 on bonefish including a solid 10 pounder plus a few jacks and missing a few bites that I'm sure were smaller, harder to hook bonefish.  The trip ended in the mangroves throwing lures for snook but John caught two barracudas instead.

Bucket List Eliminator May 24, 2022

Craig jumped on board today for permit and bonefishing with a steady 20 MPH wind and dirty water.  Man it's been tough conditions but it has worked out and I was hoping for the same for Craig.  I set up in an area that has been on fire and it started slow.  Oh oh!  Then he landed a jack, not what we were looking for but then....the rod doubled over and the reel screamed.  Yes!  Wait, it was a permit!  Awesome! With the permit out of the way it was time for bonefish and it took much longer than I would have liked but eventually it came and after a long scorching run Craig landed his 10 pound bonefish.  Wow!  Two bucket list foh checked off the list under terrible conditions.  Whew!

Tarpon SUCK! May 23, 2022

Tarpon season has been slow and today was a shining example, unfortunately Alexis and Raul were on board to witness it.  Although I searched all over creation, the only tarpon I found were at a bridge and they wouldn't eat.  That's it, that's the tarpon report.

Rich and Lucas fished with me today on an otherwise windy day, especially for May.  I took them to the area I have been bonefishing in the last few trips and catching bonefish on every trip so we went for it.  The guys worked and eventually Rich got hsi bonefish, a small fish by our standards of about 2 pounds.  Rich declined a pic with the ominous statement of "it's alright I'll get a bigger one.".  No!  Anyway that was it for bonefish landed but we did miss a few bites, probably from smaller bonefish that are harder to hook due to their smaller mouths.  Off we went to a channel where Lucas finally scored a bunch of snappers including some for dinner and we wrapped it up on the flats with each of the guys getting nice lemon sharks.

Toughing it out May 21, 2022

Today was a 180 degree difference from yesterday with high winds, very cloudy conditions and the threat of rain all trip long as Ash and Parker fished with me.  They wanted bonefish, tarpon and permit and some fly fishing but they were wise and listed to their guide as I explained our best bets given the conditions.  With that in mind we were limited as to where we could fish but we made the most of it.  The first two bonefish spots were dead slow so off to spot three.  I changed tactics here and they scored hooking 5 bonefish and landing two.  Nice!  The trip ended in the mangroves trying to get a snook on fly but it didn't quite work out.

Alec is back! May 18, 2022

Alec usually fishes full days with me but today life got in the way and could only do a half day in the afternoon with the goal of just catching fish and use his new GoPro.  I took him to a channel where he caught some snappers and yellow jacks and then moved on to the flats.  Here we pulled double duty, drifting the flats for barracudas and sight fishing for sharks.  We saw a shark, a bait was cast, a little coaxing was required, the shark ate, it was on!  After a great fight Alec was able to get some really cool videos and break in his GoPro.  The trip ended looking for bonefish and to keep the trip stress free I chummed up some bonefish but something REALLY bad happened.  A big stingray ate one of our baits off the bottom, freaked out and swam away really fast and with it went my $300 bonefish spin rod combo.  NO!!!!!!!  How in the world did the rod come out of the rod holder?  I've hooked hundreds of fish off that rod holder.  The expensive mystery remains.  Urgh!!

4 Days with Mike May 16-20, 2022

The last few days have been tough and therefore I haven't even posted reports about them but a few days of slow fishing and then being left at the dock by a no show client was not good.  But, here's Mike.  I love fishing with Mike and we spent four days this week fishing Biscayne Bay and the Everglades, all on fly.  The days in the bay consisted of losing a bonefish on fly, taking innumerable shots at permit and then looking for snook and keeping the fly rod bent on jacks, snapper, runners and more.  The highlight was the Everglades where Mike tore it up on both days catching snook at every spot we fished, the first day being the best with crazy snook on fly fishing.  At one point Mike landed 4 snoom on 5 casts!  Wow!  We were using black baitfish patterns but the redfishing was slow so I couldn't get him his slam. Wait, I'm not sure why I just turned a very positive report into a negative one.  Oh well, the 'Glades were on fire and Mike is not hooked!

4th Quarter, 2 minutes left May 12, 2022

John jumps in the boat and tells me he has tried to catch bonefish for years but caught tarpon and bonefish instead.  Ha, poor guy!  Anyway, off to go bonefishing we went.  Spot one produced one bite that didn't get hooked and it slowed down.  Spot two produced another bite but it was a swing and a miss.  Then......it died off.  No fish anywhere as I sweat the prospect of John not getting any bonefish with me.  That was until the tide turned.  With just a few minutes left in the trip the tide, which was running late, finally turned and man it was on!  In just a few minutes John got his first bonefish, lost another and got his second.  Whew that was close!

Sometimes I myself wonder May 10, 2022

After a day off, a cancellation and a couple of rod bending trips I had John on board for a full day of fly fishing.  The day definitely did not have the typical calm wind May conditions.  From the moment we boarded the skiff it was already blowing 10-12 MPH.  Spot one was slow so off to spot two.  Spot two produced yesterday when I had a cancellation and a buddy of mine and I fun fished for a few hours but the bones were picky yesterday.  I needed to figure this out.  With the wind increasing I set John up with a good angle to take shots at passing schools and they came, from all different directions!  Dang man they don't cooperate sometimes.  Anyway, John got a number of bonefish to turn on his fly but not eat at the last minute, had one eat his fly but missed the strip set and got two on spin gear and shrimp before it all slowed down and the wind increased to about 20MPH.  Last stop was the lee of an island where he had some shots at big snook and even had a bonefish try to eat his baitfish pattern a few feet from the boat.  So cool!

The deadly Duo May 4,5 &6, 2022

I could not have two better guys on board for three days.  Matt and Mo are from Martha's Vineyard and they can fish and throw a fly.  We had three perfect May days as May should be and the fishing was red hot.  We focused on bonefish, tarpon and permit and all three days the guys had tons of shots and hooked bonefish all three days but Murphy's Law was hanging over us.  On day One Mo hooked a bonefish on fly on his second cast and spit the fly next to the boat right before release.  Matt followed up with a hook up not long after but the fish broke him off.  The shots kept coming and the schools kept getting bigger.  At the end of three days we finally got one to the boat after dozens of shots, numerous hook ups and plenty of laughs and general teasing.  What a great three days!

Oh so close so many times! May 2, 2022

I had Nick on board today with fly rod in hand for some general fly catching so we started off for snook where he had a couple of hits but swings and miss.  WIth the wind increasing I took him to a few wrecks where he caught a bunch of snappers and jacks on fly.  As the wind increased we fished the lee of a key next to a channel and waited for the bonefish to move out of the channel and onto the flat. It took longer than I would like but eventually they started to move through and Nick had plenty of shots at bonefish, turning a few with the fly but not getting a commit.

Family Fun May 1, 2022

I had Dan and his two boys today with the goal of keeping the boys busy.  We started early in order to beat the weekend crowd and got on fish right away with the boys catching small mutton snappers, mangrove snappers, small grouper, trigger fish, blue runners and small amberjacks on a shallow ship wreck.  We finished off the trip on the flats for small to medium sharks where the boys landed one shark and hooked a couple more that came off.

It worked backwards April 30, 2022

Alex was back on board today with his buddy Brandon and the weather worked backwards today.  It started off nasty with us having to constantly change spots to avoid the lighting and strong rain but thankfully Alex is a tough guy and we stuck it out.  We made a long run to almost north Key Largo where there was a clear spot with no storms and we bonefished getting Alex a nice bonefish.  As the weather started to clear and Brandon really wanting a shark we moved back north as the weather slowly improved.  We couldn't make it to the shark flats but I found a small mullet mud, probably the last mullet mud of the year and worked it lures.  It was on fire with the guys catching bluefish or lady fish on almost every cast as long as we were on a certain spot of the mud.  Man, it was a cool day today with great guys and a strong finish to a super busy month for me.

Three Crazy Dudes April 29, 2022

Brad, Jason and Cody couldn't be nicer guys to fish with.  The guys kept me laughing and had a blast.  We started tarpon fishing with tarpon rolling around us but soon enough they told me they decided no tarpon, but sharks instead.  Off we went to the flats and it was on fire. I set out the baits, turned around and they were on with Brad on first.  We lost that fish but eventually all three guys caught sharks and the bite was non stop.

She beat the tarpon! April 28, 2022

Emily and Chris from Oregon wanted to try tarpon fishing.  I told them it's been a tough season with slim pickings during the day but we went for it.  With the calm conditions I had a feeling they would be in a spot where they have rarely been this season so off we went.  A short run later we got to the spot and there they were, rolling here and there.  We set up and had two baits out but soon after Emily hooks up and after a tough but efficient fisht, she got her big tarpon to the boat.  I grabbed the leader for the official release and then the tarpon surged and dashed to the back of the boat as a 400lb bull shark tried to eat it.  I hit the throttle and broke off the tarpon and ran circles in order to scare the shark.  It worked as the tarpon swam away with no sign of the shark.  Whew, close call.  We wrapped up the trip fishing a bridge for tarpon but they refused to eat.

Brown Tarpon April 27, 2022

We kept it moving with David and Joel as we tried tarpon and bonefishing without success on a pretty slow day.  The were itching to fish for sharks though so we wrapped up an otherwise slow day fishing for lemon sharks on the flats and that was on fire.  The guys hooked a number of them in short order as the tide came off the flat and saved the day for two very cool guys.

Greg the Adventurer April 26, 2022

Alex is a long time regular client and he is an awesome dude and he brought his buddy Greg today.  Greg has sailed all across the globe in sail racing competitions and fell in love with Biscayne Bay.  The goal was shark so I took them to a channel to catch bait and had a blast catching nice yellow jacks as well as hooking a couple of black tip sharks that were coming out of the water to hit our baits.  Nice!  Once on the flats the guys caught sharks before calling it a day.

A turn for the better April 24, 2022

Finally the wind started to come down on time for Jess and Ben to head out with me.  This was a fun full day trip where we fished for snook, bonefish and sharks while squeezing in some snapper fishing for dinner.  It's always great to fish with Jess and she was eager for Ben to catch a shark, and he did.

So close!!! April 21, 2022

The wind has been blowing but we press on.  It was blowing 20-25 MPH today when Peter jumped in the boat and off we went for 6 hours of hiding from the wind and getting him some fish.  We started off tarpon fishing but the only spot we could fish didn't hold any tarpon yet so we went bonefishing and Peter hooked a nice fish that came off.  Moving on to snook we worked docks and Peter had three bites, hooked one massive snook that broke him off on a piling.  Ouch!  We wrapped up the trip tarpon fishing with no success.

First Time Kids April 20, 2022

Today I had Sally and her two boys for a quick trip to get them fishing.  The boys have only fished once before so it was a laid back, keep the rod bent kind of trip and they did well.  The boys caught red grouper, snappers, jacks and more.  With all the practice they had today they became pros by the end of the trip.
