She Killed it! June 21, 2023

Maria, she's awesome and she brought her super cool friend Joe along for a full day of fishing the flats on fly and spin.  Maria had the fly rod and Joe had the spinning rod and we were targeting bonefish.  Well, we had a great time and using shrimp Joe hooked and landed 4 bonefish on her first time bonefishing.  Wow!  Maria armed with the fly rod was really happy for Joe and as the weather started to get a bit sketchy it finally happened for Maria.  Cast, strip, strip, strip, "I'm on!"...  I love that!  The bonefish got her into the backing 4 times before the solid 8 pounder came to the side of the boat for a release.  Well, Maria was done and Joe was cool with it so we headed in early to avoid the coming weather and end on a high note.

Back at "The Reef" June 20, 2023

Happy Father's Day everyone!  I was able to take Father's Day off because my Sunday charter rescheduled due to weather.  I was back yesterday with long time client Kevin and his friend Bart but we got run off the water by storms after losing two bonefish on fly.  Today was a different day as I worked an afternoon trip out of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo again.  The weather today was perfect so I was pretty excited.  Justin and Steve were part of a corporate group having an event on site and a half day fishing was part of the event.  They could care less what they wanted to catch so I suggested bonefishing, how can I not?  Once we got on the flats we got into some bonefish pretty quickly and regularly using spinning tackle and live shrimp with the total tally being three bonefish, two for Steve and one for Justin.  Good work guys!

Ocean Reef Club June 16, 2023

I was down at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo today for a fun dad-son "tournament" as these dads were celebrating their sons graduation from Middle School.  I had Dave and his 14 year old son Hunter aboard and they told me to not stress out as they wanted to relax and have a good time.  So, we did but we did go bonefishing.  To keep it light I decided to chum for bonefish as opposed to the ardous and intense sight fishing for them.  They definitely relaxed and Hunter got his first bonefish plus we missed another bite or two.  To keep this going Hunter also released 4 nice sized bonnet head sharks.  Very cool and they also got to score points for their "tournament".

Two days, three trips June 14-15, 2023

On Wednesday I had two trips.  My morning trip was with Gustavo from New Jersey originally from Argentina.  Gustavo has been fly fishing for a while but never in salt water so today was his first salt water fishing trip ever.  He didn't really know what he wanted to catch on fly as he just wanted to check things out.  Well, this time of year the best bet on fly is bonefish so we gave it a shot.  I have to tell you, we worked but after a while Gustavo got a take but missed it.  Hmmm.  Ok.   A bit later he got another take and this time and converted and landed his first saltwater fish, a bonefish on fly.  Are you kidding me?  Towards the end of the trip he added another one quite a bit bigger.  Some guys have all the luck.  Wait, isn't that a song?

The afternoon I fished with Maya, Jay and Lucas, the first of two trips to accommodate a family of 6.  I took them to a shallow wreck where they caught their first saltwater fish, snappers, chubs and blue runners.  Once the hot action slowed I took them to the flats for some shark fishing and they each caught sharks and Lucas caught a stingray which was a thrill for him.  Cool!

The second day, today, was with the second half of the family and this time it was with Yurich, Phillip and Tristan.  I took them to two channels, one was fun and the other was dead so off to the flats for sharks and they each caught sharks.  In the end Phillip mentioned everyone caught sharks and had a blast.  Awesome!

Alec in the Glades June 13, 2023

I love fishing with Alec and he brought his friend Mark along again.  This time we decided to skip fishing Biscayne Bay and fish in the Everglades.  Right off the bat Alec caught a nice snook on a lure and then Mark caught a trout, lost a snook or two and maybe a redfish.  Heck, we could have had a grand slam in the first 45 minutes of the trip!  Then it happened.  Sharks! Lot's of sharks!  There were so many lemon sharks all around us the bite shut off and we were done.  Well, Mark took advantage and hooked a couple pf lemons and landed one.  Off we went to fish another spot.  Once again, the fishing could have been solid as we were seeing snook bust on bait and redfish moving across the flats but there were tons of sharks here too.  We could see the snook swim right past the boat, see us and the sharks and bolt off.  So frustrating.  Mark caught another lemon here and we were off.  We wrapped up the trip in an area called Lake Ingraham and there we found lots of rolling and busting tarpon but we cast until we got tired and the tarpon did what they usually do, ignore what we are offering even though we were throwing mullet imitation lures, they were eating mullet!  Urgh.  We called it a day.

First time on the fly June 12, 2023

Louis and I had to reschedule due to weather but we worked through it today.  Louis is a big fisherman and had caught tons of fish but he started fly fishing 2 years ago and wanted to catch a bonefish on fly.  I have to tell you, the weather was tough with lots of breeze and cloud cover.  At our first spot a squall moved through and we got rained on for a while, so much so we couldn't see around us.  Well, the squall passed we dried off and fished another spot.  Here Louis hooked a couple of bones that were moving through but we lost them.  Not long after he hooked up and landed his first bonefish on fly and then shortly after that he hooked and landed a nicer one.  Just as things were starting to get good the weather got really bad forcing us to run to the marina and wait about an hour for the storm to clear.  We went back out again for about 45 minutes but we had shot out shot and we were done.  Not a bad outgoing considering we had terrible conditions!

A romantic two hours June 9, 2023

Well, romantic for Ted and Lauren, not for me.  I love fishing with Ted and today was the complete opposite of what we usually do since his girl Lauren was aboard.  They wanted to fish a bit and cruise a bit for two hours so we stayed close to the marina and bonefished for a bit while the weather across the bay cleared up and then we crossed.  Ted wanted to go to Boca Chita Key and have lunch so I dropped them off and they hung out for a bit, ate lunch and Ted picked some shells for his little girl back home before we ran back to the marina.

Jaws on the flats June 2, 2023

Lisa had booked a trip for her kids to get out and so some fishing.  Well, the kids wanted to catch anything that was fun and have a good time.  I have to tell you, it was tough not going bonefishing with the perfect conditions we had but it's OK.  I took them to a channel to catch some bait and after keeping a few blue runners we were off to the flats.  The flats were slicked out and HOT but we had good current to disperse the scent and the sharks started to come in.  In short order both of the kids hooked and released their sharks and then they decided to call it a day because of the heat and a building storm right over the marina.  We made in back just in time and waited out the rain under a roof until it stopped and they were able to jump into their Uber.  Cool day, no sarcasm intended.  :)

Monster for the first timer! May 27, 2023

Man some guys are spoiled and my spoiled I mean Chad from TX and by spoiled I also mean a 13lb bonefish for his first bonefish ever. WHAT?!  Yes! Crazy!  Well, this is what happened.  Chad and his friend Adam jump aboard and the morning was good but not slicked out no wind morning.  I ran to the spot I fished yesterday where we had all the tailing bonefish and zippo.  Ha, that's my life, here one day gone the next.  Off to the next spot and that was it.  The fish were moving through as expected and in no time Chad had a 13lb bonefish in his hands.  He had been bonefishing several times before but drew blanks.  Well, today he hit a grand slam home run.  Then, another bonefish at about 9 pounds, then an 8 pounder, then a 9, then a 6 and on it went until he had gone 6 for 6 on bonefish with the smallest a 6 pounder.  Dang what a morning!!!  Oh did I mention this was a half day trip?  Just crazy!

BTW, this pic is not of the 13 pounder.  The pic of the 13 pounder came out OK but I thought this was a better pic.
