It's Raining Silver December 19, 2020

Kurt has fished all over the world for bonefish but Biscayne Bay hasn't been one of those places.  So, with that in mind we headed off to bonefish.  At the first spot we saw a few schools but we didn't connect.  The second spot would be a different story as Kurt wound up releasing a nice 8 pound bonefish, his biggest to date.  He had hooked up a few minutes before and with the bonefish starting to roll in I was cool with sticking around but he wanted to try something different.  Something different was a shallow ship wreck that were loaded with yellow jacks, big blue runners, mutton snappers and more all caught on lures.  Nice work Kurt!

Spectacular Two Trips Today December 18, 2020

Wow, wow, wow!  What a day today!  I had two trips today in 55 degree weather and my morning trip was with Troy and 12 year old Alex.  On our second spot the guys slayed the snook and Alex got his first bonefish.  Troy reached a point where it was snook on every cast but Alex ended up catching the bigger ones.  Way to go Alex! Oh, in between snook and bonefish they kept crushing nice sized jacks and mutton snappers.

My afternoon trip was with Bill who wanted to bonefish on fly.  It would be tough since by now the wind was up to 20 MPH.  But first, we hit the morning spot and Bill picked up a couple of snook.  Once the tide reached the point I wanted we went bonefishing where Bill hook 3 on fly and landed one.  Nice!

It was a silver and gold kind of day today!

OH SO CLOSE! December 16, 2020

This is the sport where seconds and millimeters matter, sometimes a lot!  I had Jason and Ben today with Ben fly fishing and Ben spinning.  They just wanted to catch fish but didn't mind giving bonefish a shot.  So, we bonefished and had a decent number of shots.  Jason was on the bow and made a few good casts and so did Ben.  However, on one of them Ben made a great cast and the school went right over and missed his shrimp.  On another school Jason made a great cast, began stripping and we see a bonefish pull away from the school and wake right for his fly.  Then bam, the bone ate the fly but Jason pulled the rod back just a bit and pulled the fly.  Ouch!  The rest of the trip we focused on catching yellow jacks, big blue runners, snappers and more on fly and lures.  It was a blast and the guys wore themselves out.   But then we hot the flats and caught lemon sharks.  then they knew what it was to get worn out by a fish.  LOL

Keeping the Fly Rod Bent and a Surprise December 14, 2020

Today my client was Tom with the goal to fly fish and catch different species.  With great bonefish conditions we committed a few hours and had some shots but no hook ups.  From there we fished a few wrecks where Tom caught a bunch of species, especially fun and hard fighting yellow jacks on fly.  These fish were so hyped up they were crushing his fly on the surface and devouring gurglers.  Nice!  As an added bonus, there was a goliath grouper on the wreck, I've never seen one on these wrecks before.  Pretty cool but concerning because once they move in they devour everything.

Wow, this was a rare catch! December 12, 2020

I had Conor and J.P. from N.Y. this morning that just wanted to catch fish.  So, with warming water temps in the 70 degree mark I had high hopes.  After catching a few mackerel I decided to make a move and it paid off.  The guys smoked through 6 dozen baits in no time catching jacks, snappers, and a goliath grouper.  Yes, a goliath grouper, only the second one ever caught on my boat!  Wow.  We tried for bull sharks afterward but they were MIA, probably too cold for them.  But, I'm still in shock over that goliath!

Bonefishing in the COLD! December 10, 2020

Burr, it's been cold with night time lows in the 40's and by Miami standards that's really cold.  That was not an issue for Kent and Alex from Texas as they jumped aboard bundled up and off we went.  Hitting a few tarpon spots that should have held fish was a swing and a miss.  More concerning was that the schools we did find were hunkered down on the bottom, a sure sign they are stressed.  A quick glance at the Raymarine told the story, cold water temperatures, in the mid 60's.  Ouch!  We moved on and caught a few mackerel, lady fish, snappers and jacks but it was definitely slow.  Running south at the right tide for bonefish I was concerned but optimistic about the warmer water flushing in with the incoming tide.  This is when Kent got a nice bonefish and missed another bite but it was not what it should've been.  To add to the troubles, there were no pelicans diving on bait schools and not bait to be found, no surprise as by now the water temps were between 63 and 65 degrees.  The day ended on a flat with the incoming tide for sharks but that also drew a blank.  So, it was slow, we caught fish and Kent got a nice bonefish.  Hmmm, I'm not quite certain how this day turned out.

He's Hooked Now! November 27, 2020

This was Zach's first fishing trip and Bob had told me the bar was set low since Zach just needed to catch one fish.  Well, I think I can handle that.  As we set off I looked for bait in a few places but they were MIA so off we went with plenty of live shrimp.  Bob has fished me with me before several times and this time we were not going to chase bonefish and tarpon like before.  So, I got to a spot that was perfect for what we wanted to do and Zach lit it up landing a snapper on his first cast and he was rolling after that.  He kept track of the count and he said he was up to 25 not including losing a number of really nice fish.  Well, mission accomplished, Zach is hooked and it's time to burn off the Thanksgiving delights from last night.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
