July 31, 2016 (Video!)
Thirteen year old twins Jake and Adam wanted sharks and barracuda. They thought it'd be fun they said, let's catch one they said! Well, they did, and the sore arms will come later. Gary and his two boys are from Miami and they fish with me a few times a year so off we went before school starts. The barracuda fishing was slow (weird!) but the shark fishing was not. Right off the bat Adam hooks a black tip that we sight casted and watched eat the live bait right in front of us. Unfortunately the hook pulled. A bit later one of the rods goes off and Adam gets a nice 5 footer to the boat. These boys have an intense rivalry and Jake was feeling the pressure. Now Jake is up to bat and a bit later a big 6 footer charges the bait and is off to the races. Fourty minutes into the fight the hook pulls again on Jake. Oh, oh! Moments later another one swims by, I cast and drop the bait in front of it, he swims up and eats and I set the hook. Jake is on again and after a nice run the hook pulls again! What's up with that? We change flats to catch the last of the tide and a few more big sharks move in but ignore our baits. Right as I'm about to call it a day another big shark comes in and ignores our live bait but eats the dead bait and Jake is on! Twenty minutes later he gets a 6 footer to the boat and the pressure is off Jake. Poor Adam, he thought he had the day won with the biggest shark of the day and in the 4th quarter with 8 seconds left Jake scores on a hail mary and steals the victory. Until next time boys!

July 29, 2016 Report (Video)
Regular client Alec boarded this morning and off we went in our search for snook. In spite of our best efforts no snook came aboard. The next spot was for big jacks and snook but no one was home. Tarpon proved to be better but we missed the first bite as a nice tarpon sky rocketed in the air attempting to eat Alec's bait startling both of us. The fish came back and ate the bait the second time but came off a few moments later. In the process, Alec landed two black tip sharks that were all over our tarpon baits. Running down to the flats, the first flat provided a great shot at a school of waking bonefish in super shallow water but no hook up in spite of Alec's good cast. A couple of flats later we had another shot at a big school of bonefish but the cast was off just a few feet and the school spooked. The last spot flat of the day provided another shot at two BIG bonefish in the 10-12lb range but we couldn't get a good angle on them. In desperation I told Alec to cast and he did but the fish bones were at a bad angle and spooked. The day ended with Alec hooking a few barraudas and landing one and hooking a nice bull shark on the flats.

Nick from the U.K. had never fished saltwater before and was looking to land his first bonefish. The first spot of the morning provided a few schools of bones but they stayed just out of casting range. The next flat provided two big schools of bonefish in the 8lb range but we couldn't connect because Nick's prescription sunglasses weren't polarized and it was hard for him to spot the fish. At the last flat we had another couple of shots at big bones and a school of mudding bonefish. Nick was great to fish with and he'll be back, with polarized sunglasses.

Today was a tough morning. Mike and Jeff from Naples boarded in order to target bonefish and permit. Conditions could not have been better so I had high hopes for today. The first three spots yielded one school of waking bonefish in the distance and not much else. Spot four provided two shots at permit but no takers. Spot five proved to be the last spot of the day where we saw two bones but too close to the boat. There was hardly any life on the flats today so we called it a day at four hours.

Tony and Rob are childhood friends and jumped aboard to get some fishing in. The morning started slow but piked up in the afternoon where our baits were being destroyed the moment they hit the water. Running out of baits they kept the action going on lures. These were great guys and a blast to fish with.

This afternoon Brian and his friend boarded for an afternoon of fishing. The goal was shark fishing and so we hit a spot to catch bait. With bait aught we headed to our first flat that proved unproductive. The second flat was the same with us missing two bites from sharks that were very spooky. The last spot was close to the marina and it was vacant of sharks. Tough day.

July 14, 2016 Report (Snook!)
Jim and Nancy dropped off their boys Cole and Calan this morning and the boys and I were off. The wind was sportier than is typical in July but that makes the heat much more comfortable so off we went to our first spot of the day. After getting set up it didn't take long for one of the rods to doubles over and Calan is on to a nice snook. After a few quick pics and a release the second rod doubles over and Cole is on his snook. Again, a few pics and a healthy release and mr snook is on his way home. About 10 minutes later another rod goes off and Calan loses his snook to a shark. A few minutes later the same happens to Cole, his snook got sharked. These were big bull sharks in the 6' range eating our snook 20' from the boat. We missed a few more snook bites and Calan landed a BIG mangrove snapper before we changed spots. I took them to a tarpon spot that held small to medium tarpon and after we set up and the tarpon start to roll around us a group of summer campers invaded the area and stayed within 50' of the boat screaming and jumping off their paddle boards. URGH! Needless to say, we moved! The next two spots were dead but the last spots produced nice jacks, snappers and we missed another snook bite. Not a bad day on the bay today!

July 12, 2016 Report (Snook, Video!)
Joey is also a local angler and we've fished plenty of times before and today we just needed one spot. Using artificial lures he caught a barracuda but no other bites so we switched to live bait. That was the ticket! Almost immediately he hooked a huge snook that broke him off at the end of the fight. Urgh! Minutes later he hooked another one that he landed. Again, a few minutes later the permit rod goes off but it was a healthy jack. Again, moments later he hooks another snook but this one got demolished by a big bull shark right next to the boat as the snook was jumping trying to get away from the shark. After the shark showed up the action died off and it was time to head in. Really solid morning with a great guy!

Will is a local angler and has fished with me before. The goal was catching dinner with his buddy Spence but I wanted to add a big shark to the equation since they have been thick. We fished three spots with only one producing. They caught mutton snapper, bar jacks, trigger fish and had two big bites on the shark rods but no hook ups.

This was a cool trip. Pierre is from France but owns a fishing lodge in Panama PanaFishing.com and wanted to get some fishing in before flying out. At the first spot I was marking sharks but couldn't get a bite, weird! At the second spot we hit the flats where Pierre had some shots at bonefish and small sharks releasing one shark. Our trip ended with Pierre catching two nice mutton snappers that we targeted on artificial lures. Check out his site, it's very cool!

July 5, 2016 Report (After the smoke cleared)
Before boarding their flight back to Brazil, brothers Harold and Diogo wanted to do some shark fishing so off we went. The first bait got nailed and 30 minutes later Diogo had a nice 100lber to the boat. Then, we waited and waited but once the tide was right it blew up! The sharks were coming in fast and furious with Harold hooking 5 sharks in less than an hour and a half losing all off them except the last one. One of the ones he lost jumped 6' in the air! We left them biting and scooted back to the marina by 11 am. Very cool morning with very cool guys!

July 4, 2016 Report (Fishing Fireworks)
My trip this morning was with Alfonso from Mexico, his son Juan Pablo and J.P.'s friend Santiago. The morning was slower than I would have liked but we still caught trout, snapper, trigger fish and a mutton snapper. Juan Pablo wanted to catch his first shark but they weren't feeding with the trying incoming tide. I decided to fish a free spots in order for the tide to slow some. Once that tide slowed we gave shark fishing another shot and it went off! We needed just a few minutes and both rods went off with a double header on drag burning sharks. Thirty minutes later we had two releases and time to go home. What a way to end out morning!

Local angler and repeat client Andy brought his friend Jason along today for a half day before boat traffic got crazy. Breezier than it should be in July we fished our first two spots with not much action. Spot 3 had tons of fished marked on my Raymarine and a big bait later Jason was doing battle with a raging shark. The 30 minute fight had some additional thrills as a big bulk shark attacked Jason's hooked shark but didn't hurt it too bad. Not long after the rod broke but we managed to land the beautiful 5' black tip in spite of a shark attack and a broken rod. Whew! We ended the trip Tarpon fishing where we got a hit but only a leader with Tarpon slime to show for it.

A.m. report.
From Mexico came Lorenzo senior and Lorenzo jr. Father and son and they were a lot of fun this morning. Our first spot was a bit bumpy due to a stiff East Wind which is very unusual for July so we moved off to our second flat of the day and that one was loaded. Using strictly artificial lures Lorenzo and his dad caught Blue Fish, snapper, Barracuda, Lady Fish and shark and it was on fire. We called it early today because of the rain storms and lightning around us
PM report
I had to wait about 30 minutes in order for Brad and his two sons Brad and Barrett to jump on the boat and head out for my afternoon trip. The storms that got us off the water early in my morning trip were still around and had intensified so it's always better to be safe than sorry. When the weather finally cleared a bit we ran South and fished a Shipwreck where Barrett and Brad both caught about 20 fish apiece. Now we decided to hit the flats for shark but that proved to be slow so we moved off to the third and last spot of the day where on the second drift Barrett hooked up a nice big shark that absolutely smoked the reel and after fighting it for about 15 minutes it broke us off. What a heartbreaker! We wrapped up the trip a few minutes later after a couple of drifts and called it a day.

I closed out June today with Bill whose is a regular client of mine from North Carolina. With fly rod in hand today was actually a great day. Our first flat of the morning was slick calm and it was absolutely infested with permit. Bill had shots at tailing permit, cruising permit, floating permit and then dimpling permit along with shots at a few schools of Bonefish. When the action died down I decided to cross the bay and fish the shoreline and that held a decent number of fish as well and we wrapped up the day back on the ocean side flats where Bill had shots at another group or two of Bonefish and big single permit and several strings of big Tarpon migrating back North. Although we didn't hook any fish we sure had shots today and it was solid day!

June 24th 2016 report
Today's trip was a three-quarter day six hour trip with Nathan and his fifteen-year-old son Elijah. Elijah is a big strong kid who has a world record in power lifting at 380 pounds. Impressive! They wanted to catch fish for dinner so we hit our first spot in the morning and the first cast Elijah lands a nice mangrove snapper and then we caught some mutton Snappers that were a bit short some triggerfish and then Elijah said something he shouldn't have said. He said he wanted to catch a shark because he had never caught a shark before. The next fish landed was a nice big live 3-pound Jack and I quickly threw him back out on one of those big tarpon rods for sharks. It didn't take long for the rod to double over. Elijah grabbed the rod and fought his fish and then his dad fought the shark this went on for an agonizing four hours until we decided to call it quits and break the fish off. I suspect it was probably a huge bull shark that got foul hooked on one of the fins since it is extremely rare for us to hook into a shark that we cannot land in at least an hour and a half. After the shark episode most of our fishing time had evaporated so we ran to a grass flat where they caught a nice big trout and added that to the list of species for dinner. What an ordeal with this shark today!

Today I was fishing with Giovanna and John from New York and we fished just a couple of spots before Giovanna got a little queasy from the heat and we decided to call it a day early. At the first spot they were Tarpon rolling around and we caught hogfish, mangrove snapper Triggerfish and a few other species before she started to feel a little queasy. We moved on to a grass flat but that proved to not be helpful so we ran back in to make sure she was okay.
