October 9, 2015 Report (Mullet Run Video!)
Doug was back for his second trip and today we would use mullet. Pulling in to a spot that had been holding mullet I filled the live well with two throws of the cast net, one had big mullet and one had finger mullet. We head back to South Beach and the action was slow, for a while. Then the mullet started to move through and it was on! Tarpon would cart wheel and blow up on the schools of mullet not 30 feet from us. Early on Doug watches as a tarpon comes up and destroys his mullet but doesn't get hooked. Ouch! There were a few nice barracudas in the mullet schools and Doug hooked 3 or 4 of them. The action died about an hour into the frenzy and we hit a few other tarpon spots without success but ended the day catching a few more jacks on fly.

October 8, 2015 AM & PM Reports (Mullet Run Feeding Frenzy Video!)
Am Report
Doug from Atl. climbed aboard with fly rod in hand and off we went looking for tarpon. We had to scrap the initial plan to bonefish because of the extremely high tides we've had this week. Being fall, I really wanted to get him into some mullet run feeding frenzy action and we found it! Schools of mullet began to pour into Miami and Doug had a number of shots at tarpon and caught a spanish mackerel but the tarpon had mullet on their minds. We fished two other tarpon spots and found fish at both but only managed a few follows but no takes. The morning ended with Doug having a blast catching jacks on fly on almost every cast!
PM Report
Joel and Dean met me at the ramp minutes after my trip with Doug and after hearing how the morning went they had one thing to say, "let's get mullet". So live mullet we got! I took them off South Beach and it was on! School after school of migrating mullet were being blasted by tarpon, spinner sharks, big jacks, cobia and mackerel. Right off the bat Dean hooks up and the drag screams as he fights a nice spinner shark. Joel hooked one fish that spooled us taking all 200 yards of 30lb braid before we could chase it! When I grabbed the now empty reel, the spool was HOT! I love the mullet run! At times our live baits wouldn't last 45 seconds before hooking up, it was amazing! When the dust settled we had to catch our breaths. That's fall in Miami!

October 7, 2015 Report
David jumped aboard again and I really wanted to get him on some snook. Poling in to one of my favorite snook creeks revealed something unsettling, really high water and still pouring in when the tide should have been going out. This meant the snook were deep into the mangroves and we could hear them feeding out of reach. I cast netted some live pilchards and headed to a grouper spot where David caught some fish while we gave time for the tide to turn. A few hours later we went back to the creeks but the water was still too high. We live baited for a bit without success for snook.

October 4, 2015 Report (Snook!)
After a few days off I was itching to hit the water and waiting to get Bob and his son Noah on board. I love fall in Miami and I had a feeling things were going to be good. We started later than I would like but having to drive over an hour to get to the marina was understandable. At the marina under my boat was a school of pilchards. Thank you God! A few throws and I got enough bait for snook fishing. Pulling in to the first creek we staked off tossed a live bait in the water and while I showed Noah how to work the artificial lure things moved quickly. Rod doubles over, drag screams, Bob grabs the rod and fights a snook to the boat. Cool! We had a few more hits but they were a bit shy because it was later in the morning. Taking them to another spot we had fun with a number of fish and not so much fun losing 2-3 big groupers to the bottom. Urgh! Last spot produced a slob mutton snapper for Bob. Nice job Bob! Catching Biscayne Bay pink and gold, can't beat it!

September 30, 2015 Report
Sean and his dad Bob are from Colorado and wanted to fly fish Biscayne Bay for bones, tarpon and permit. I got them on the water before 6:30 AM while it was still dark and as we pull in to the first flat the dead calm conditions revealed schools of mullet being absolutely decimated by snook. Focus Mo, focus! Poling down the shoreline we had some great shots at schools of bonefish but didn't hook up. The water was moving in much quicker than normal due to the super moon this week and so the window was brief at this spot. The rest of the trip was slow with too much water in most places and when we did have visibility there wasn't much around. We ended the day with some shots at tarpon.

September 27, 2015 Report (Snook fest!)
On a guides day off my buddy Chris and I took his micro skiff down to the Everglades for some relaxing fishing for snook, tarpon and redfish. While we didn't see many reds we didn't even notice their absence due to the presence of so many snook and tarpon. Our first shoreline at first light held tons of small tarpon but wouldn't eat a perfectly tied dark tarpon fly. Once the switch was made to a gurgler, it was on! chris polled me into a creek we had heard some bait being busted and the tight creek gave me just enough room to make a cast a few seconds after a big explosion took place. Fly lands, strip, strip, strip, explosion, jump, jump, jump, tarpon on! Cool! The activity spooked the rest of the fish in the creek and fine by use as there were about 200 mosquitoes all over us. Another spot produced a snook for me and a couple more bites for us. After tucking into a creek to best avoid a rainstorm, the fishing just exploded in the calm after the rain. Total tally was 1 tarpon on fly, 12 snook, four trout, and well over a dozen missed bites by snook and tarpon as they would explode on the lure but not get hooked. I love a day off!

September 26, 2015 Report (Snook/Shark)
Local angler Richard jumped aboard and we hit the snook creeks before sunrise. The action was solid but very frustrating. Fishing top water they would explode on the lure but not get hooked. One of them hit the lure so hard it knocked it a foot into the air and still came back to hit it! Fishing a few different spots we decided to forgo bonefishing and look for something bigger. Shark! Setting up on a flat it didn't take long for them to move in and we released 2 sharks in the 5 foot plus range and lost one bigger to a pulled hook. Not bad for 3' of water!
