We had some tough conditions today as Andrew, Bart, and Andres jumped on the boat. We had and East wind blowing 20 miles an hour that kept the Bay frothy and the water churned up. However I took them to a couple of snook spots that were out of the wind and the guys did pretty well catching snook plus some barracudas and a few other fish plus we missed some snook bites and lost a couple along the way. We were using artificals all morning but I had bought 10 dozen shrimp which I kept in my well just in case. Well, wouldn't you know it, they all died again! Nothing has changed in my well, water temp or anything else. The only thing I can think is that shrimp are beat up from the commercial fishermen catching them and they don't last long. I've seen it happen before. Well, there goes $50 down the drain! Capt. Mo Estevez www.miamiboneFishing.com 786-853-1409 Follow me on Instagram @MiamiBoneFishing |

Tough conditions were overcome today February 27, 2021
He strikes again! February 26, 2021
Kevin was back on board today with his son Zach for full day of fishing. I can tell you the fishing was really slow today but it started off good with Kevin landing a really nice snook. He has a habit of doing that every time he travels down to Miami and fishes with me. We bonefished for a few hours and didn't see any so we decided to call the trip short after all the shrimp mysteriously died in my live well and we could not find any pilchards.
Tough day today February 25, 2021
I had another half day today this time out of Key Biscayne with Max and Micah. We fished for bone fish for a while saw 4-5 fish but it was definitely slow since for some reason there was very little current although we were supposed to be in the peak of the tide. We changed it up and fished a bunch of other places picking up some fish here and there but it was definitely slow. At the last spot Micah hooked what I am certain was a big bone fish but it broke off after a few long runs. we wrapped it up after finding a few tarpon that disappeared as quickly as they appeared. Some guys score on the first try February 24, 2021
Today was a fun trip with Rick from Homestead where I live, Sean from Texas and Scotty from Arkansas. The guys just wanted to catch anything and have a good time so we started off at a shallow shipwreck where they caught a bunch of snappers. Once the tide was right we went over to a bone fish flat where Sean got his 1st bone fish and Rick got a shark. We wrapped up the half day trip on another flat shark fishing where Scotty got a big barracuda and the other two guys got some more sharks. These guys were a ton of fun to fish with and absolutely hilarious!
Missed Opportunities February 23, 2021
We started it off with beautiful conditions today as Pat really wanted to get his 1st bone fish and had the opportunity to fish with his dad Rich. We worked some areas along the shoreline that were slick calm and could see some fish moving through. After having several shots Pat made a great cast to a group of fish waking right towards us. The fish move towards his shrimp we saw a big swirl thinking he was on but unfortunately moved off completely missing the shrimp. What a heartbreak. We found a few more fish along the way but storms started to roll in and after getting wet a few times we were close to the end of the trip and headed back trying to out run yet another storm.

Another two "fer" February 19, 2021
Another double today with my morning trip being with Jan and Candace from Atlanta. These were great people and so good to hang out with them. This was a mix of fishing, sight seeing and hanging out. Even still Jan caught ladyfish, three species of snapper, three species of jacks and in the end he said he caught more fish than he ever has in his life. Nice! We did have to cut it short by about 20 minutes to avoid a rain storm that was headed right for us.
In the afternoon I had regular client Brad on board and his daughter Madelyn. I hadn't seen Madelyn since she was 9 and now she is 15, time flies! This was such a fun trip! Brad always likes to fly fish but with 25 MPH winds it was be almost impossible. So, jig and shrimp would make it really fun and productive. Madelyn had the fish of the trip with a nice grouper and Brad got a cool african pompano. When the dust settled they had caught about 13 different species and had a ton of fish to the boat. Awesome! Now it's time to relax for the next two days as we have 20-30 MPH winds.

Making it work February 18, 2021
Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. I was working with 20 plus MPH winds again today as Steve jumped aboard my skiff. He wanted to fly fish but that wouldn't work today so we fished live shrimp instead and got to work. At the first spot Steve lost a nice snook and then got two as we missed a few more bites. With the fishing slowing down we made a move to a bonefish spot that would work since it was just outside the wind but as we got to the spot there was already a boat working it. No worries. Steve and I fished the last spot of the trip in the teeth of the wind but an area that was calm and he quickly got another snook and a some yellow jacks. Congrats Steve on your first snook!

The tale of two trips February 16, 2021
I had Nicky and her husband on board this morning for a half day trip of keeping the rods bent. I had launched from Homestead and ran to Key Biscayne to pick them up and fish but halfway through the trip storm cells started to move through and we had to get back to the marina before getting rained on. The first half of the trip we bonefished and saw some move through but we couldn't get one to eat. After the strong storm cell moved out we got back to fishing and they caught a bunch of different species. While my charter went well, my run home didn't go so well. After looking down south, looking at the radar and everything else I headed back to Homestead only to get caught in two nast storm cells from a cold front that had me running in near white out conditions and 30 PMH winds. Whew, that was rough.

It's been on FIRE! February 15, 2021
Another two trips today, that has become a recurring theme as I have been swamped with work. My morning trip was with regular local client Guillermo and his wife Vivi. Guillermo has been working on his fly fishing and that is what he wanted to do, just catch anything on fly. With Vivi using spinning rods and shrimp and Guillermo on the fly they caught snappers, lady fish, jacks and runners.
My afternoon trip was with Jay and his wife Holly and his bucket list fish was bonefish. Ha, great! With the tide perfect we fished an area that's been consistent for bonefish and they each caught their bonefish. To add to the trip, it was Jay's birthday so he got his birthday. Congrats Jay!

This kid killed it! February 14, 2021
Although I was planning to be off for Valentines Day I got a last minute call from Lauren and I said yes. At the dock she met me with her husband Tom and their 5 year old son Sawyer. They really just wanted to catch a few fish and have fun so I took them to a "snook" spot and a few casts in, Sawyer hooks something that starts peeling line and fight his fish like a pro. When the fish came to the boat it was a snook. Five year old caught his first snook on his own! So cool! Other than the snook, the theme of the day was fast fishing at each spot and then it would slow down. This caused us to move around but we kept the rods bent including barracudas, snapper, yellow jacks and jack crevalles. Not a bad day, especially for Sawyer!

Trying something new February 13, 2021
Luisa moved to Miami 15 years ago and now her husband Dan is living here as well and as a gift for Valentines Day she got his a charter with me. These folks were really cool. Dan is a fly fisherman and we started fly fishing for bonefish in the one small pocket that allowed us to avoid the wind. Dan had some shots and worked on his double haul and took some shots at "signs" of bonefish but no hook ups. After a couple of hours we fished a shallow wreck and it was on fire. Luisa was on fish on every cast and Dan followed up not far behind. In the end they wiped out over 75 baits, kept four big snappers for dinner and caught a ton of fish.

Start them early February 12, 2021
Today I had John and his son Brunson on board for a half day of bonefishing in the afternoon. Brunson is 14 years old and showed up in crutches and a leg brace from a skiing injury but the boy plays hurt! John was on the fly rod and Brunson on spin as we hit the flats. We only fished two flats as they produced a bunch of bonefish but even being a Friday, the first four flats I wanted to fish had skiffs on them already. Anyway, John and Brunson had plenty of shots at mudding bonefish and half way through the trip I asked if they wanted to continue bonefishing or change it up. Well, Brunson was hooked and decided to ride out the rest of the trip looking for bonefish. Although we couldn't capitalize on our opportunities, Brunson kept mentioning how he loves to bonefish. WOW!

Committed to one goal February 11, 2021
Sometimes you just have to commit and Ralph was not afraid to commit to bonefish today. The forecast was wrong, again and when we met at the ramp it was pretty windy from the east. I decided to run from Homestead south to almost north Key Largo and fish the flats that provided some cover. Fishing the area we found quite a few schools of mudding bonefish but throwing a fly was tough in the wind. We wrapped up the day at another spot where the bonefish were few and far between. Sometimes you just have to commit. In the process Ralph and I found we had tons in common and I definitely look forward to fishing with his again.

The kids always have fun February 4, 2021
I had Al and his 6 year old son today from Connecticut. They were great and the boy can fish. The problem with today is that a strong cold front dropped the water temperatures 7 degrees in 6 days and the fish were in shock. We fished a bunch of spots but only small stuff ended up on the hook. I need these water temps to stabilize!

WINDY! February 2, 2021
Sometimes I just want to cancel a trip when I look at the weather and boy today was one of those days. Although we had clear skies, there was a whole lot of wind, gusting to around 32 MPH. Dang! But, James and his wife had booked me and we really had one decent spot to fish in that wind so we went for it. It worked out. They caught snook, yellow jacks, snappers, rainbow runners and a few more species. The fishing was actually very good and we had a blast. I was glad I didn't cancel!
