Ending the month on a high note! April 30, 2021

Today I had two trips scheduled but the morning client never left a deposit and never responded to my calls or texts so I moved Jeff from afternoon to morning and it was fine by me.  I love fishing with Jeff and his boys Will and Drew but Will is in college so we were missing one.  Drew was set on catching a bonefish so we took advantage of the tide we had and Drew capitalized landing the first bonefish he hooked and hooking a bigger one later but the hook came free after a long run.  Ouch!  The trip wrapped up looking and fishing for tarpon but no bites.  Congrats Drew!

What an intro April 29, 2021

Leo moved from Argentina and is a fishing junkie and being new to Miami he wanted to try inshore fishing.  Having great conditions and little time to work with on a half day I had to stay focused and stay on schedule.  Tarpon fishing, very few fish, off to snook.  Snook fishing was a blast with quite a few fish hooked and landed along with nice jacks.  But, something ate one of the jacks and then I realised it was a big bull sharks so the next jack caught was bait and we hooked the big bull and it was a blast.  The day ended with ladyfish giving us some drag burning, high jumping thrills.  Welcome to Miami Leo!

Missed opportunities April 27, 2021

Back with Alex and Andrew but with the wind increasing we were out of Miami today instead of Homestead.  We had good conditions overall early on so we looked for tarpon but not finding big numbers we decided to look for snook.  Well, we found them but we lost quite a few only landing one.  I can tell the second fish Andrew hooked was a slob snook but, it, came, off!!!!!  Wow!  Along the way the guys caught other stuff but those lost snook will haunt me.

Going to plan B April 26, 2021

Booked for tarpon, bonefish and permit Ryan and I were excited to get on the water.  Unfortunately the fishing was shut down for the big three so we changed it up.  Fishing for snook was also tough with few hits and missing the couple of hits we got.  In the process Ryan did get a nice jack to end the day.

Jaws on the flats April 25, 2021

Alex has been fishing with me for years and he was back with his friend Andrew.  The bonefish and snook fishing were slow but we caught some bait, hit the flats and caught lemon sharks.

Drew Crossed This One off the List April 24, 2021

Local angler Drew wanted to try bonefishing so I was all in.  We started early morning to catch the right tide phase but it was really windy out of the east but we went for it anyway.  Almost right off the bat Drew hooked a massive bonefish that got deep into the spool before it broke off.  Ouch!  After hooking two more bonefish and losing them for different reasons, the fourth fish was the one.  Another big fish hooked later we were able to land this one and cross it off his list.  We wrapped it up later that morning as we couldn't locate permit and very few tarpon.

From one extreme to the other April 22, 2021

Day two fishing with Alec and today I decided to take him to Everglades National Park for a change of scenery.  I had just gotten my COVID19 vaccine last night and wasn't feeling all that great with little energy but I pushed on, made the long drive and made the trip count.  I timed the tides just right and it actually turned out to be better then I anticipated since I got to the first spot on what should've been the slack tide waiting for the incoming tide but instead the tide was running late and we caught the end of the outgoing tide.  I didn't mind since I love that tide phase anyway and it was great.

YES!!!! April 21, 2021

Boy did I need this day!  Alec and I got to work in the hunt for tarpon on what the forecast was calling a horrible weather day with 60 plus percent chance of rain and lots of wind.  Alec's reply " I have a rain jacket." Nice!  Turns out the forecast couldn't be more wrong as we had a light west wind. calm conditions and enough cloud cover to make it comfortable.  Actually, overcast, hot, muggy and calm, perfect for tarpon!  They were all over the place and it wasn't long before Alec was on to a 140lber.  After the release he hooked another one about the same size on a lure and then released a 160lber not long after that.  Wow, what a morning.  Changing things up we switched to bonefish where he went 0-3 on big tarpon.  Dang, what a day!

The hunt for bonefish April 20, 2021

Bonefish is one of our premier species in Biscayne Bay and people from all over the world come to Miami to fish for them which is what Skip did.  We worked hard for those bonefish and missed a solid bite on what could have been the fish of the day.  Switching off to snook produced similar results missing a few bites.  Tough day today.

Sometimes the client makes the difference April 19, 2021

Today I had the daughter of a client of mine on board, Jess, with her friend David to bend some rods and catch whatever.  They were both laid back and very cool.  I tried my best to get them bonefish but it was shut down in the area we were fishing and the same with snook when we switched it up.  With the wind starting to blow I took them to a wreck where they caught a bunch of snappers, porgies and blue runners.  They were interested in shark fishing so off to an area I like for medium sized lemon sharks and turned those blue runners into bait where we sight casted two lemon sharks and called it a day as the wind got worst.

Dinner time April 18, 2021

Micah booked me again for some dinner and brought his friend Dan along.  The guys had a great time and of course, talked smack to each other as they caught a bunch of snapper and took home a nice yellow jack and snappers.

We lost the fish of the day! April 17, 2021

Jason and his friend Joe climbed aboard and we were off in search of tarpon.  This was a tough day with unusually high boat traffic, so much so that I had to wait in line for 20 minutes at the marina to launch the boat, at 6:40am!  A little late but at least I made it and we were off to target the species Jason wanted to catch, tarpon.  I fished a few spots and finally found some, rolling and happy so we set up on them and well, 5 minutes later a wake board boat showed up and ran all over them.  They settled downa nd started rolling again when a commercial fishing boat runs over them again.  Come on!  After that they disappeared so we left.  Fishing a few more spots for other species got the blood flowing and as I ran to another spot I see a huge school of big jacks on the surface.  We made a cast with a soft plastic and it was on as Jasin fought the 20-25lb jack until it broke us off on some structure .  Ouch!  The day was wrapped up with the guys catching snapper before heading in.

This trip was a blast! April 16, 2021

I always have fun on my charters but today these folks had me rolling on the floor laughing.  The highlight here was Meagan and her sense of humor while Anne and her dad Jack just sat back and watched the Meagan show.  Jack and Anne are experienced anglers but Meagan hadn't fished since she was a kid so she was rusty.  Starting the morning tarpon fishing we found them with lockjaw as the girls gave Jack a hard time.  Once I took them to another spot to bend rods and catch a variety of fish it was on!  Meagan kept tangling the line or losing fish and I haven't laughed this hard in quite some time as she made light of herself and well, kept giving Jack a hard time.  They caught a ton of snappers, jacks, ladyfish and more.  This was a fun one!

The three amigos April 15, 2021

Tristan, Jared and their friend came aboard my skiff from a brief stay in Homestead we were on our way.  Wanting to keep them close to the area I took them to a bonefish spot where they hooked three bonefish and lost them all, hooked two jumping lemon sharks and a couple of sting rays before I decided to change it up.  I took them to a couple of spots where throwing lures they caught snook.  It was a good trip but I'll lose sleep over those bonefish we lost.

Rod bending, tarpon hunting day April 14, 2021

Marco wanted to spend some well deserved time with his son and admitted they hadn't fished in a while.  Well, that's awesome!  I took them to a couple of spots where they caught snapper and jacks but it's tarpon season and I can't help myself but to look for tarpon.  As we were tarpon fishing and watched them roll around us they guys got restless so I gave them a lure and had them blind cast.  The ladyfish were there and gave them good action before calling it a day.

Fast action and they had a blast April 13, 2021

Todd and Jack fish with me every year so we kept the tradition going today as I picked them up from Fisher Island.  We didn't have to travel far to get into some action of snappers, jacks and lost a couple of snook.  Hitting a few other spots we kept the rods bent and had a great time.  See you in a few months guys!

Oh yeah! April 12, 2021

After having Sunday off due to two cancellations and a last minute trip falling through I had a rare day off but today I was back to work and I was so glad.  I really needed redemption for Saturday and regular clients Joe and Kim were on board to make things happen.  Fishing a few spots waiting for the tide to turn they catch snappers, jacks and some other species but no bonefish or snook.  "Ok, it's time, the tide is right, let's move."  With the outgoing tide we fished a bridge for tarpon and I marked them clear as day on my Raymarine.  After setting up and using a simple technique Joe hooks up to about a 100lb tarpon.  Yes!  No!  The fish ran between two of the bridge pilings and cut us off.  Geeze, that's bridge fishing for tarpon for you.  After setting up again Joe hooked up again and this time landed his 100 lber.  Way to go Joe!  I feel better....

Today was not good! April 10, 2021

Fishing has been so good and Biscayne Bay firing on all cylinders, until today.  I was fishing with Jim and his wife Nancy again and they wanted bonefish and snook or any other gamefish.  Our first stop was at a bonefish spot I like and have caught many bonefish but today was slow with only one fish moving through.  As we fished this spot the wind kept increasing from the south so we moved to some snook creeks that usually produce.  But today wasn't one of those days.  Come one!  With the wind getting worst I cancelled my afternoon trip with a local and put in extra time to make something happen but that bay was shut down today.  How frustrating!

Oh so close! April 9, 2021

I had two trips today with my morning trip being with Steve who tore it up a couple of days ago.  We changed things up and hit the oceanside flats for bonefish and permit.  Well, we found some permit and Steve made a bunch of good casts and turned two different permit that would chase his fly and turn away at the last minute.  OH!!!!  We were so close!

My afternoon trip was with Will and his wife Felicia.  Will wanted to catch anything but definitely had his eye on a bonefish.  Under the conditions we had I had two prime spots to bonefish but they were covered in boat so we changed it up.  I took him to a wreck and a channel and had a blast catching a bunch of species including nice yellow jacks.

This was incredible! April 7, 2021

My oh my, what a day with Steve who is now living part time in Miami and wanted to check out the local fishing.  We was up for anything and wanted to do some fly fishing was well.  With an unusually calm April morning we fished out of Homestead and worked a shoreline not far from the marina for bonefish.  I have to tell you, Steve can cast a fly rod and once he shook the rust off he got better as the day progressed.  His casting was rewarded with a nice bonefish on fly not long after we got started.  Once again, what a way to start the day!  After his bonefish in fly we decided to fish spin tackle.  Wait, isn't it usually the other way around?  Not today!  Once we switched to spin it was non stop bonefish again with Steve going a total of 5 for 7.  Nice!  Once that slowed down I took him snook fishing but we had to work for this one.  The snook were there but they weren't as active, no worries we had a secret weapon, Steve.  After some work he hooked and landed a solid snook that gave him a great fight and some awesome jumps.  Wow!  The trip ended early with Steve landing another snook at another spot.  We're fishing again on Friday but it'll be tough to beat this day!

Oh what a day! April 6, 2021

Today was a day that had me confused.  I had two amazing men onboard in Chester and Todd and they wanted bonefish and only bonefish.  Chester has dreamt of catching bonefish since he was 4 years old and this was certainly a dream fish for him.  Off we went to a spot I like under the calm conditions we had and pretty soon Chester gets a bite but the fish is hooked only briefly and just moments later Todd hooks a freight train of a bonefish, out of the same schools as Chester's fish.  What a few first runs!  As the fish tired it got closer to the boat but but got under the boat and broke us off as we all stared at him.  Ouch, 0-2!  The action slowed and I took them to another area.  Here we had a big school swim through and the guys hooked a double header but inexplicably they both came off after a long run and deep into the fight.  Are you kidding me?  But, in the 4th quarter Chester hooked a nice fat bonefish that we got in the boat, got the pic and got Chester's dream come true.  Whew, 1 for 5 on bonefish and I don't know if that was good or bad but Chester got his bonefish so I'm ecstatic.

Family Time April 5, 2021

Two trips again today with the morning getting started as Shannon, wife Alima and daughter Lina jumped into the skiff.  I took them to a spot where they had a blast catching lady fish, pompano and snappers and took some home for dinner.

My second trip was with Gus and his son.  The water warmed up a bit but not enough to get the tarpon back in the bay so we went back to the ladyfish where they had a blast catching the hard fighting high jumpers.  To mix it up I took them to a few more spots where they caught some more species but the guys really liked the lady fish.  Who can blame them?

The golden slob April 4, 2021

When Rick booked me he let me know he lived in Miami so when I was watching the weather for today I didn't like the wind, lots of wind so I asked him if he wanted to reschedule.  The problem was his buddy was leaving Monday back home so we went for it.  It was cool, water temps were at 71 degrees, too cold for tarpon and the wind was limiting where we could fish.  Hmm, OK no problem, we'll work through it.  I looked for tarpon everywhere to no avail so we turned out attention to snook and bonefish.  After the only bonefish spot we could fish drew a blank it was time to search for snook.  Ha, Rick found them.  After a few casts he hooked a solid snook and proceeded to land another one after that.  His buddy Gus hooked one but it came off next to the boat and the guys missed a few more bites but the rods stayed bent with snappers, jacks and more for Gus and Rick.  Wow, Rick rocked the snook!

Oh so close!!! April 2, 2021

A few years ago I fished and brothers Rob and Steve and they are always a blast to fish with.  These guys keep me laughing all day and today was no exception.  The water temperatures had dropped almost 10 degrees over night so I focused on resident tarpon that tend to deal better with the cold.  Well, the bait didn't last 10 minutes until Rob hooked up but it was no tarpon, it was a permit!  Nice!  His first permit and an awesome way to start the day.  Although we didn't hook a tarpon in the morning we did change it up where they both caught bonefish.  Just need a tarpon for the grand slam!  Back at it for tarpon, there were slim pickings but I did locate some......but they had lock jaw.  Ouch!!

No fooling around on April Fool's Day April 1, 2021

Two trips today as the high season continues.  My morning was spent with Mike and his son Shane who just wanted to get out and catch some fish.  So we started with catching fun ladyfish and nice pompano.  Once we had some action we targeted tarpon when a slob snook decided to eat the tarpon lure and gave Mike an awesome fight.  At the end of the trip I took them to another spot where they caught a few more species and Shane got a nice bonefish.  Congrats guys!

In the afternoon I had Michael and his boys again.  The fishing continued solid as they caught dinner and their first snook.  Cool!

I had another family trip today with Andrew, 10 year old Charlie and 6 year old Allison.  She is SO cute!  They kept busy catching lady fish, jacks, snapper, pompano and a couple of fish that we lost.  Just one spot is what we needed and before we knew it the time to head back in was upon us.

Another half day gone right! March 30, 2021

Man I've been busy working non-stop so I was back on the water with Gregg his wife and son.  They wanted to keep the rods bent so I took them to spot where the ladyfish have been holding and using live shrimp they got into some nice action.  The problem?  There was no bait in the Miami tackle shops this morning so I was working with the few I had alive in my live well from the prior day.  Thankfully my buddy got me three dozen from a shop that got a late shipment and I met him at the ramp half way through our trip.  Those 3 dozen shrimp went quick with hot action keeping the rods bent, drags screaming and the clients happy.  With an hour left we ran out of live shrimp so we took a tour of the bay and called it a day.  What great people and trip today with great weather and hot fishing.

The ladies tore it up again! March 29, 2021

I had super stars Maria and Elissa today and Elissa brought her brother Jonas for a day of fishing.  They usually fish 8 hours but it was 6 hours today.  Well, they always like to catch fish to eat and off we went to get them dinner.  After a few slow spots I took them to a channel I like on the tide we had and using shrimp and jigs they tore it up.  They caught mangrove snapper, yellow jacks, barracuda, porgies and more.  At the end they caught their limit of snappers and a half dozen nice yellow jacks.  Well, mission accomplished.  Dinner will be at 7pm!
